This is it you have to let it fly and trust what you saw or will see. Some never get this others get it right away others get away with it with great arms.

The other thing that is important we overlook on a QB is recognizing blitzes switching the protection and making the correct hot read. Hasselback broke down a play where the Lions overloaded the blitz TE recognizes it runs the hot route is open Geno never even looks his way.

If it's a matter of hesitating in the sense where he's not trusting his eyes (i.e., pumping at the time he should release the ball), that can be corrected. A young QB can learn to start trusting what he sees and let the ball fly. I don't get the sense that's what's causing late throws. I really believe he just has very poor anticipation and needs to see the target open. Add in sloppy footwork and inconsistent mechanics and you get the turnover cocktail that is Geno. He got away with this college because of his arm, WRs that gave him great separation and an offensive system that wasn't as predicated on timing. If you watch Geno throw a simple hitch, he'll wait for the WR to turn and put his hands up before even beginning his arm motion. In the NFL once your eyes pick out the the intended target, you better let is go as your not the only one that knows where that ball is going.

His situational football awareness is pretty awful too. How many times can one man run out of bounds behind the LOS? How about keeping the ball in the field of play on a last second shot at the end zone?

Geno Smith is not the answer at quarterback. We're going to have to draft a QB
next year and start the process all over again.

Maybe the fear of making a bad decision actually leads to a bad outcome. They have a "no mistakes" mantra drilled into his head. That might bring about that little click of hesitation. I think he should just play. That ridiculous cross field pass he threw with first down yardage staring him in the face the other day made me think that they have programmed something into his head about running too much, Geno just has to prepare properly, then just play, and let the chips fall where they may. If he has the instincts, let him try to use them.

The WVU offense, like most Air Raid offenses was predicated mainly on timing plays. Most snaps Geno had about one second to make his throw, generally a short throw with a ton of screens and what were effectively forward hand-offs incorporated. His issues aren't with timing. His issues are making complex reads and then accurate timely throws off the reads. It's not knowing if he should throw the ball or not that is the problem. At WVU he just threw the ball to the right spot on the field 80% of the time because the play wasn't going to have a defender anywhere near the ball. That's what an Air Raid does.

His WR's didn't give him great separation in the open field except for Tavon Austin and Austin has a catch box the size of a postage stamp so Geno had the separation but he also had to make a great throw, which he often did. Stedman Bailey got separation near the line of scrimmage by the same device every other WVU receiver did, a quick play designed to pick off a defender or catch a screen or go in motion across the formation and take a short forward pitch on the other side. Down the field he didn't get much in the way of separation. Geno just threw him the ball one on one whenever he had the opportunity to do so. He knew Bailey would come down with the ball because Bailey had been out-muscling, out-hustling and generally out-scrabbling the DB's one on one with Geno since high school.

Go watch the full game tapes of Geno and WVU in 2012. You'll see exactly what I'm talking about.

Bailey, btw, is like Wayne Chrebet but two inches taller and about 15 lbs heavier.

Anyone hear Jaworski's breakdown of Geno on the Michael Kaye show? To my surprise he put more blame on the rest of the team after analyzing the film.

I'm talking about 3-5-7 steps drops w/ or w/o hitches working in conjunction with routes at corresponding depths, all in an effort to have the QB release the ball so that as the WR makes his break and turns to look for the ball, it's right there. That's the timing and rhythm I'm talking about, what the WCO is built on. I'm not talking about quick bubble screens.

Glad you threw in his lack of situational awareness, since that is imo a separate problem, and clearly a problem, alonig with his poor anticipation, which is reflected in his timing being off, and late. Yes, poor mechanics, and often poor accuracy with balls too often poorly located for receivers to catch in stride. I said this after last season - any one or even more than one of these problems could be overcome. But the likelihood of him overcoming all of them was, and remains, a rather difficult proposition to accept.

yeah just heard Jaws breakdown and it was pretty detailed.

he cited some problems from Geno, like the INT being all on him, but also cited a lot of protection breakdowns.
notably he mentioned Breno getting routinely beat, and CJ whiffing on a blitz pickup, both of which led to negative plays. i expect more from those vets..

surprisingly tho, he didn't get the sense that Geno is staring down receivers, and agreed with the decision to keep starting him.
considering how tight the AFCE is, have to admit i've been leaning towards giving Vick the 2nd quarter of the season. i actually think that can help Geno in the long run watching the offense from the outside in.

That's not the offense the Jets are running right now. In fact it doesn't sound like an offense that more than a half dozen teams are running at this point. Half the NFL is in the shotgun most of the time. How many teams are actually operating from under center most of the time? That's like a remnant of the late 90's and early 00's.

good assessment and i generally agree.
it's such a hard position for a young guy to fully get comfortable with when you think about it.

he has to stop with the turnovers, which i'm sure is part of the hesitation. hesitation is not a good thing, but being too quick gets you the gunslinger tag, and not always in a good way. Gunslingers make big plays, but also turn the ball over quite a bit.
He's got to find that middle ground, which is no easy task.
at this point, who really knows if he'll find that comfort zone. game is still moving very fast for him.

Jaws is a hack who's resume is filled with ringing endorsements for QB's that became busts.

He sucked in college also. Nassib was better and beat him. The guy was a hump.

It felt like the Jets were trying to handcuff him last game which I think hurts Geno and the offense. 8 pass attempts by halftime I think?

It's not like they can't move the ball with Geno, they can. It's the RZ that's killing them for whatever reason. Handcuffing Geno just handcuffs the entire offense and slows them down in a different way. I'd rather move up and down the field and kick FGs than kick punts because you don't trust the QB.

I think you let Geno throw and let him eventually fizzle out if that is the case. He's played poorly which is a reason why the Jets are losing, but the Jets have been in every game because he played not poorly in spurts.

Side note, Ivory had 2 brutal drops, unacceptable.

I don't see the excitement for Vick. He's a turnover machine as well.

Nice to see all the Sanchez haters turning on Smith as well.

you backed him, you bought him.

the simple fact is 20 starts in, if you're bailing...you;re a moron.

you threw over a guy with potential and a schitt oc, and now...you're going to let a crap GM take a second bite at the apple?

Smith gets another year, like Sanchez should have gotten. You develop Coaches, and QB's.

fc0l did you guys just take this sport up?

Rodgers, Brees,Brady? did any light it up their first 20 games post college?

Brady, couldn't get past Bledsoe..(Thanks MO!)

Brees was so good under Schitty) the Charges drafted Eli and traded for Rivers...

    Rodgers waited his turn.

    so, ..no.

    Grow the fuck up. Whiners.

you develop Coaches..and QB's if you want to win.

    Little late to come around.

    Yes, the WVU offense was...

"Geno...look for Bailey, and austin ..pre snap...throw to the guy in single coverage..."

no decision making on the fly whatsoever..as you just pointed out.

yet...Geno was a great prospect coming out of college...rmfe.

I agree as we don't have the offensive talent around Geno to be handcuffing him especially when we insist on staying in the shotgun run or pass. This seemed like the only game he was handcuffed but if they are going to continue to do it then they need to simply start Vick. You need to let the guy go out there and throw the ball.

Hand cuff? How many points has Geno taken off the board, with turnovers and big sacks...?

2nd leading rushing attack...Kerley,Decker, Cumberland..(no true #1) hardly a dearth of talent. decker has played well despite injury, and Kerley is finally being utilized...

and Amaro has been a nice addition at TE.

thebproblem on offense has been cycling in the other WRs...imo...

You have to read thoroughly as I said this was the only game he seemed handcuffed.

The offensive talent is pretty bad especially along the offensive line. Geno hasn't played entirely well but he's been getting hit a ton as he throws.

He hasn't played well early but that doesn't mean he can't turn it around. To think that the guy should be benched and never heard of again with the offense around him is so silly. The running game looks good on paper yet when you factor in 3 huge run plays this season of course it's going to look a lot better in the stat book. If you think Geno hasn't faced a ton of 2nd and 3rd & longs this year thus far you're crazy. All you need to do is watch the succession of Chris Johnson 2 yard runs up the middle all year to understand this.
