Some good. Some bad. He has a lot of physical talent, and when he's in a rhythm, he's really good. It's all about consistency with him. He needs to build more of it.
When you jump out 21-3 you can't say "Okay we're going to stay at 21 and stop you from getting there". For some reason, we tried that. You've gotta keep scoring and putting your foot on their throat especially against the highest rated passer in NFL history against a bad secondary. One thing I don't understand AT ALL is why Marty abandoned option plays. The 49ers have ended the Packers season twice in a row using them, and Geno was killing them with options on the 2 successful drives (the highlight being the pitch to kerley). Why would you abandon attacking a teams greatest weakness and try to start running downhill?
He showed some consistancy last week. This week they ditched the running game and that put more pressure on him. I'm sorry but this is the NFL. If he can't move the chains we are screwed next week.
Pros: Played until the final whistle and didn't give the game away like he did last year when things started going bad. Was making some good throws with pressure in his face in the 1st half. Used his legs smartly and didn't take any big hits Found ways to convert 3rd downs in the 1st half Didn't throw the ball out of bounds or take a sack on 4th downs. Hate when QBs do that, at least throw it up for grabs instead of ending the play on a sack. Cons: Couldn't find his touch in the second half and missed receivers by throwing where they were Stagnated the offense scoring only 3 points in the 2nd half Couldn't hit the big play with bad placement of the ball Not a clean game
He does this at least once a game [missing wide open receivers]. The throw to Salas against Oakland and the pass to Decker yesterday. The anticipation / awareness just isn't there right now. Geno is improving let's give him that, but man those throws he misses on - I saw it in college and now I'm seeing it again in the pros. I don't know if he will fix that ever.
he does not throw the really deep ball well. it is something he has to clean up. I think his overall accuracy is okay, though.
Naw man that ball was overthrown. It wasn't like Decker half assed it either, he even dove at the end. Those are the plays that we need to execute.
pros- we didn't lose because of geno cons- he couldn't win the game for us- although he tried on the t.o. play
This is a pretty telling stat. Maybe they need to see what Aboushi can do. Winters had a good first game and then completely crushed us. I'd argue he was one of the reasons we lost yesterday, right up there with MM playcalling ( although it's light years ahead of Schotty) and the stupid decision to play a hobbled Millner against the best qb in the league. Our offensive line is a weak link, and that extends to the tight end (Cumby) which got blown up in the run game too. Winters hurt Geno's development last year and is hurting us in the run and pass game again. I wonder if he's the reason we worked out some guards last week, and not Colon.
I thought Geno looked alot better than his line suggests. Leaky Oline, no decker, no run game. There are many factors that contributed to the lack of production, but geno seems to be maturing into his role. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
It's not that I always love the backup. It's that when the starter is not getting it done, it's time to move on and try something different. See what the options are. And each of the cases you refer to is different. Absolutely the Jets needed to bench Sanchez when they FINALLY did. As a fan I don't have to like that the FO and the CS feel they are playing a Qb not because he has been effective but because the FO gave him a stupid contract. Plus I don't recall Sanchez playing well after he was reinserted. In fact in camp next year he could not clearly outplay a rookie second round player in their Qb competition. I have no regrets for wanting him benched. As for Simms, he got little preparation before he was inserted, so it's hard to say what he would have done if he had been better prepared. Meanwhile Smith was one of the two or three worst Qb's in the league, and probably would have been well served by sitting and watching some more than he did. I don't think it is good for a starting Qb to be so comfortable that they think they will not be benched even if they flat out suck. This year is different. I understand the Jets FO thinks they need to see what Smith can do with some additional development and new, better people around him. But I also get taht Vick is a proven talent who is rusting away on the bench after the FO gave him $5mil. In any event the fact is if the FO had chosen to play Vick, you would be all in on that. I suppose it's a difference of personalities. I can be conservative about varrious things. But I also understand the appeal of the nostrum Question Authority. Things may have been different for you in the past, but you seem to have forgotten that one.
Good post, I forgot about the overthrow to Decker, but he could have his Sudfeld wide open a second earlier and it would at least have been a first and goal if not a TD.
Geno Smith is his own worst enemy. When he isn't trying to do too much he is extremely accurate and also is very effective with his legs. But its the whole refusing to give up on plays that aren't there and pressing to make things happen where he goes south.
Am I thinking of the wrong play? I didn't think that was much of an overthrow. I thought Decker should've had it and could've ran for a TD. It was a little overthrown but he was able to get hands on it.
I disagree I think he has no problem at all with accuracy. I am actually impressed with his accuracy compared to other young QBs I've seen. But maybe I got used to Sanchez.... His anticipation? okay now that is a different story and you have a point. But at least it's improved from last year.
