They had a highly public relationship at the end of his career as a Jet and it is known that her being sick was one of the reasons he retired. I don't see how this is a surprise to anyone

Nielsen told Gastineau that she had cancer. He quit football and the Jets (when he was having a great comeback season) to help take care of her. Turned out she had just had an abnormal smear test - nothing to be dismissive of, but not cancer.
