The Raiders only wanted to cut a few million of his contract, he's going to end up playing for less with Arizona. He didn't have to take a cut, he just wants off of the Raiders like he wanted out of Cincy. I'd be a bit afraid of him at this point, this is his second team he's forcing his way off of. I think he's better than what we have at QB, and light years ahead of what Arizona has but he's shown before he is willing to lose money to get himself out of what he considers a bad situation.
Barcs, It's a team sport. You have to drill down more than just talking about who is Qb to figure out what was going on with the team. Your analysis sounds like the Tebots giving TIm all the credit for Denver's situation when there were many moving parts.
Kevin Kolb to the Buffalo Bills Matt Flynn to the Oakland Raiders Carson Palmer to Arizona Cardinals GENO SMITH COME ON OVER TO THE JETS!
AZ's big problem for Palmer would have to be their putrid OL. But maybe the Cards can upgrade that enough, with the right moves, and make it pay to bring in Palmer. After all Arians is the new sheriff in town, and he knows offense. But the main reason to talk about Palmer and AZ compared to the Jets is that Palmer will likely be more attracted to the kind of O Arians wants to run there. Down field passing, in short. I am of the increasing opinion that the Jets will flat out suck at Qb one more year, with no moves made to get a better (and healthier - see Garrard as too much risk NOT to be healthy) at Qb. Gonna be a rough year for season ticket holders. Very rough.
Yeah, it's a team sport, which is why I mentioned TO and Ochocinco, which should have made him better, but the improvement was negligible. I just think he's getting up there in age and would have had a similar year to Sanchez, had he been with us in 2012.. At least he had Heyward-Bey in Oakland to throw to. On the Jets they didn't have anyone close to that. He probably would have been a little better than Sanchez, but with our offense as a whole, I don't see him succeeding here.
What were Ochocinco's stats that year? What were they the year after? Did he play for a 'better' QB the next year? How did he do? Where did TO play the year after he was with Palmer? Should TO and Ocho make Palmer better, or did Palmer make TO and Ocho better?
I am sharing your pessimism. If the Jets had signed Kold, Campbell or another veteran to go along with Garrard it was almost certain Sanchez would be cut June 1st. But now that is not as likely and we are likely stuck with him another year. Unless another QB comes free like Stanton from Arizona my guess is we draft a QB in rounds 2-4. Sanchez and Garrard compete for the starting job. If Garrard is healthy then Sanchez competes with McElroy for the last QB roster spot. Regardless it looks like an ugly year. My concern with next year goes much further than QB. We still need 1 safety, two OLBs and at least one guard. Preferably two guards as the odds of Colon staying healthy is not very high. Not to mention the Revis situation. Does anyone expect Cro to have a year anywhere near as good as he had last year? Its been a long time since I have been less excited about a coming season.
The Bucs are (were?) also interested in Carson Palmer: https://twitter.com/RapSheet/status/318745338422910976 Bucs also. RT @TheJasonStation: @RapSheet are other teams interested in Palmer? Couldn't AZ just wait for OAK to cut him?
Palmer coming here is a big if, that said. The purpose Sanchez serves is simple. It costs less to keep him than cut him this year. McElroy is not a talented QB, let Garrard serve as the backup, or cut him and let Mark backup Palmer and save 1mill on. The cap as opposed to cutting mark and losing 4.3 mill.
Yup, but it might be the right play in the long term rather than throwing more money away on a stopgap. If Garrard gets hurt, and Sanchez plays poorly but they have to march Sanchez out there for some meaningless late season home games, it's going to get ugly.
Like I said earlier... Doesnt matter now...zona is giving a 5th round draft pick for him. They are trying to rework his contract. Zona was concerned TB would pick him up if released.
McElroy has more upside than Sanchez, which of course is saying next to nothing since Sanchez is finished. But still... I am not aware of any cap issue with cutting Sanchez.
There is not a cap issue with cutting Sanchez. If he is cut after June 1 or next off season there is roughly a 4 million cap hit next year. If he is cut before June 1 then next years cap hit accelerates to this year. The question is simply when do we want to pay for it?
The problem here is also my problem with the concept of playing to lose to get a better draft pick. I have no patience with that concept, so I also think it makes no sense to do nothing more than bring Garrard in. You are right, it would be ugly under that scenario. And the scenario could be even worse, since we do not know whether Garrard is in shape enough to even beat Sanchez out of the starting job by opening day. It's bad enough to think the Jets might be 3-7 and bring in Sanchez. So they get 20,000, or less, to show up the next home game. Less people means a lot of empty seats, which looks bad, but it is less noisy when they boo. But if Muck starts Opening Day, the first turnover could cause a revolution. Ugly is ugly, but then there's really ugly. And if instead of all that the Jets do somehting like trade up with a first round pick obtained for Revis and get Geno Smith, what are they going to do, start him? Or NOT start him? I am less looking forward to this season than any other since Kotite's second year.
Good points. http://overthecap.com/explaining-the-june-1st-designation/ <-- Nice article for anybody wanting a more lengthy discussion on June 1st designations.
mc elroy at bama: 27w-3l, 66.3% completions ( school record high), 1.52% picks ( school record low). cut taco loco after june 1st, go with mcelroy and garrard. if a qb falls to you after round 1 (bpa), then pick him. otherwise, grab olb, guard, safeties, tight ends. can't fill all the holes in just one draft.
