I never said he couldnt be included in a competition. Calm yourself, bud. I could care less about Sanchez at this point and would honestly prefer to see McElroy, but all Im saying is that we see him do pretty well for one half against some 2nd and 3rdd stringers and all hell breaks lose. Its worse than when the pro-Sanchez posters were telling everyone to calm down about the good new from Geno during the first week of camp. Also, Im just trying to be realistic. Do you really think that a 7th round 2nd year QB who was behind Matt Simms in OTA's is going to get a legitimate shot vs a 5th overall pick and a highly touted rookie? Im not saying its what I would do, but just the reality of the situation.
S Peterman is garbage. I really hope Winters picks it up and locks down the other OG job.... I'd rather have Slauson out there than Peterman. That was a curious transaction, Slauson signed for the vet min. Ugh, can't take a year of Peterman.
see the Arizona game last year. despite no reps with the 1s, he once again clearly outplays el taco loco. the offense picks up because they know he is an accurate passer and won't serve up td passes to the other team. in hockey terms: he was +10 last night, smith was even, and el taco loco was even only because the receiver was able to prevent a defender from catching a badly thrown ball, otherwise he ends up a -7. start Smith, McElroy backup if you like. simms should be able to beat out el taco for the practice squad. starting/playing el taco is the very definition of insanity.
you sound like one of those posters who thought wayne chrebet would never make the team, but only looked good cause he played preseason against guys who would never make the team. yes, i'll bet you figured that victor cruz undrafted guy was another guy who realistically could expect to play special teams only.
FINALLY...a post that I can say..."You are wrong!" wrong wrong wrong wrong... The point of my post was to show guys with a modest physical stature can win in the NFL. All the men I compared with McElroni were the same, if not smaller, than Gmac...and they won...consistently. Joe Montana had twigs for arms and we all know where he is now. GMac has displayed pocket awareness, accuracy, good velocity, tenacity, ability to read defenses etc... All I'm calling for is a REAL QB competition. I don't give a rats ass if he was throwing to every number 3 level guy on the planet. They are ALL on an NFL roster right now which means they are the top 1% of football players in the world. Which makes them good enough to assess someone's ability to a degree. Now, if you want to put the man in there with number 1's to prove he sucks then that's what you do. Not tow the freakin' Mel Kiper line about some bullshit lame ass excuse like "he lacks ideal physical attributes!" You can't measure heart and I'd be willing to bet that Gmac has more heart than Sanchez on his best day x10! THAT's what I'm saying. Give the kid a god damn shot. We have NOTHING to lose.
this all feels familiar.... whats the next step out of curiosity? giving him more reps? taking some more from smith or sanchez in the next week? that ship has sailed this year, his best bet is to keep doing what he's doing remain 3rd string in 2013 (sorry its sanchez and geno in the top spots) and play well enough to maintain a backup spot next year. if the chips are down enough good things will come his way.
I'll start off by saying that in the Detroit game, Sanchez's pick 6 to Ziggy was the same old same old, BUT he showed amazing poise to pick himself up, (and the team up, 'cause I bet heads dropped) to lead a TD drive, that was excellent and nice to see. However as has already been said, for some reason he can't throw screens or similar short throws, they are low or too high (Winslow) and often have receivers scrabbling to get to them leaving them vulnerable to nasty hits. So a system that should suit Sanchez, isn't quite there yet, for me. As for McElroy, every time the lad's been given a chance he's taken it and done well and SHOULD have been in the mix in TC with the 1s, of course there's time for all 3 to get reps, what a ridiculous notion that there's not enough time! But as TonyMaC has just said, I think this year is too late for that now. I'll bet the house that at some point G'Mac will get more opportunities during the season if the 2 incumbents in front of him fail. So far in 2013 , G'Mac has done nothing wrong and alot right.
gmac has certainly not taken his opportunity and done well 11 sacks isnt protecting the football, its just shitty qb play.
11 sacks .... is that not better than 11 INTs? It certainly is protecting the ball and I won't even go into why he was suddenly given his chance. 31 Atts and 19 comp , thats not great but was still way higher than the starter who at the time couldn't string 2 completions together, same team. Biggest point you seem to be missing is that was last year, THIS year is what matters and so far he's probably the best QB on the team right now.
right, so, he puts up a lower qb rating, even with sanchez throwing a pick 6, and hes somehow the best qb on the team... 11 ints? you know, i must have missed that game...
No..... Greg did not play well against SD but neither did the entire team. But to his credit, if any can be taken from that game, he did not continually make bonehead throws leading to INTs. That said he fumbled for a loss and did get picked off once, but why did he get sacked 11 times, is that all his fault then? Despite all that, we lost the game 27 - 17 , but McElroy was the only QB at that time capable of moving the sticks.
so, when sanchez is in, the guys are all playing great, but with mcelroy, they shit the bed? sounds fishy... maybe mcelroy just isnt that good... you know, getting rid of the ball in a timely manner is kind of one of the things you look for in a qb, not 11 sacks.
I see some lovely support for McElroni based on one drive in a game that he thankfully saved in 2012, and also a preseason game where he performed well with and against some of the worst players in the league. I also know that the WCO was developed to marginalize physical limitations of quarterbacks. My question is this: Are we looking for a starter that can simply perform in a system, or are we looking for a starter that can EVOLVE that system? This is a game of futures. I'm sure that the minority of this forum wants to see Sanchez play for the Jets in 2013. He fits the skillset when healthy, but I think his ability to stay healthy is suspect. Do we want Greg McElroy to start, seeing that the system is designed to work around his limitations? He is a smart guy and gets the offense, but will struggle in situations when the team is down, similar to Chad. Do we want a player with a quick release, strong arm and scrambling ability, such as Smith? I think Geno can evolve this offense where neither of the other two have a chance. I'd like to see an honest QB competition. And I do think that McElroy has earned that opportunity. But how do you justify splitting first team snaps across 3 players and still expect to compete???? (edit - TonyMaC made this point better than I did.) But my guess is that Geno would be the overall best candidate to revolutionize the system being put into place for this team. I think he should end up as the day one starter, assuming he keeps playing at this level, and if he falls, and the Jets collapse, 1st round pick in a draft that will be rich in QB talent. And I'd prefer not to spend a 1 on a QB next year.
I guess my biggest takeaway from the game is that the defense has a chance to be very good this year. The defensive line is pretty much what we thought it would be given the overall talent level there - it's strong and verging on dominant. The linebackers seem to be much improved over last year with DeMario Davis providing some needed speed in the middle and Antwan Barnes giving the Jets a pass rusher who is not one-dimensional. The secondary has a real chance to be in the top 5 but they'll likely be in the top third instead given the low chances of Cromartie repeating his great season from last year and the fact that Milliner is a rookie. Free Safety is still an issue but between Allen and Jarret the Jets just need one of them to play acceptably and the unit will be pretty tight. That adds up to another top 5 Jets defense with Rex and Dennis Thurman adding the best defensive brain trust in the NFL to a good collection of talent. If the Jets can just put together a stable offense that can maintain a winning game state they have a puncher's chance to surprise us in a good way this year. If they're turnover prone and unable to maintain the game state in the first half then we'll likely be disappointed.
Can you please finish your meal before going for dessert hun? He doesn't turn over the ball. Do you need to be educated on what a turnover in football is???
He also played well against the Chargers, not great, but considering the dross that had been run in previous weeks. I'd agree with that. Maybe that QB isn't on the team yet, but certainly wouldn't rule out the top 3 we have though. I never thought that Sanchez had a problem with staying healthy??? Well that's quite funny because all I've seen is the polar opposite. That remains to be seen, and you might want to add your 'staying healthy' option to Smith as well. How long is the off season? Are you seriously telling me that a huge organisation like the Jets cannot evaluate 3 QBs in that time? We all want to see an HONEST evaluation, but you simply can not when one QB is getting handicapped because he wasn't a 1st round pick and any other excuse that gets tossed in there too. Parity and transparency across the board, THEN we can get an honest assessment. And that's all it is right now, a guess. I like Geno and from what we saw against Detroit think the kid has a bright future. Just suppose that this time next season, Sanchez is gone and we have Geno and McElroy fighting it out for QB#1 (assuming that MS is our #1 this season), that could be interesting. McElroy isn't another Ratliffe, there's way more to this young man than we thought, how high his ceiling is? Well I hope another team doesn't find that out and find a gem
I have a feeling that the D is going to be top 3, the weakest link being the LB corps. I thought they were lacklustre in the Lions game, but thats just one game I know. It could be what helps coach Ryan solidify his job as well.
I don't know how much can be foretold from the first pre-season game. As far as splitting reps to get McElroy more time...I think it's warranted. Sanchez is not gonna get better with more reps. His short passes are pretty crummy. He woulda had two pick6's if not for Winslow's hit...both on short passes. Same old shit.
