One of the biggest takeaways during our first preseason game, is that we seen our Jets offense put up two TD's. It took us into the 2nd quarter of our 4th preseason game last season before finally putting up an offensive touchdown under coach Sparano. Our offense looked so much sharper under Marty Mornhinweg during our first preseason game when compared to how we looked under a first year offensive coordinator in Sparano last year. We may have lost the game by the count of 26-17 but our offense put up 329 yards (5.7 yards per play), 27/39 through the air (completion percentage of69.2% between Sanchez, Geno and McElroy), 292 yards passing through the air with an average of 7.5 yards per pass attempt. 2 TD's when compared to 1 INT/3 sacks. Rewind back to our first preseason game last year under Sparano, and you'll see how our Jets offense of 2013 seems to be much more prepared when compared to 2012's first preseason game against the Bengals. We lost the game 17-6. Offense only put up 173 yards (3.3 yards per play), QB's went 12/20 through the air (completion percentage of 60.0% between Sanchez, Tebow and McElroy), 57yards passing through the air with an average of 2.9 yards per pass attempt. 0 TD's when compared to 1 INT/5 sacks. I never put too much stock into preseason games (team performance wise) but I'm not sure some Jet fans understand how much improved our offense already is under Mornhinweg when compared to Sparano. We've gone from a first year offensive coordinator in Sparano to an experienced top 10 and/or borderline top 5 type of offensive coordinator in Mornhinweg. When comparing our first preseason game of 2012 to 2013; it's already showing on the football field. Regardless of QB's out of Sanchez/Geno I believe our offensive attack is going to be pretty damn solid under Mornhinweg with players such as Ivory, Goodson, McKnight and Powell coming out of the backfield, talented WR's such as Stephen Hill and Braylon Edwards on the outside with Jeremy Kerley working out of the slot, Santonio Holmes returning hopefully midseason, two pass catching TE's in Winslow Jr. and Cumberland working the middle of the field etc. Our offense is going to be much sharper than what most Jet fans are currently expecting. Ivory. Goodson. McKnight. Powell. Hill. Edwards. Kerley. Holmes. Winslow Jr. Cumberland. Marty Mornhinweg does indeed have offensive weapons to work with, therefore our offense will have success. Our Quarterbacks regardless of Sanchez/Geno will have an actual play caller with X's and O's come Sundays.
^^ I totally agree it's pretty exciting to have a competent OC for once ,this is why I was high on the Sanchez td drive he made it look easy under Martys play calling I hope it evolves , if it wasn't for the ugly pic 6 People woulda been raving about Sanchez after the game
That drive was class. The only play I didn't like was the check down and pass out to Powell in flats, the better option would have been to throw away, instead it went for -4 yards, then we had the Colon penalty. But really I think I'm nit-picking a little here. Marty's mighty midgets looked good out there though, darting around and being elusive after the catch.
FACT: For whatever reason, Sanchez cannot throw a screen pass. He has major problems & usually gets in major problems whenever he attempts them. He needs plenty of work on that.
Was really happy w/ the first teamers as a whole. Defense kept the Lions first team out of the end zone & displayed improvements in prior areas of weakness including defending the edge, pass rush & overall team speed. The passing game was a big time surprise. Pass pro was solid despite the monstrous DL they were facing, young guys were making plays after the catch & Sanchez seemed to have command. The running game was not good..but usually OLs struggle early when their is turnover in the starting 5 & they are learning a new scheme(which they are). Expect this to improve as the OL continues to gel & we get some skilled bodies to return to the backfield. My biggest worry for this team is crunch time/clutch factor. This is a young group that needs to learn how to win together. There will be some tough losses. Who makes the plays in the big spots? Somebody needs to step up. Who will it be?
I agree with everything you said. McElroy would get a legit shot with any other HC. Rex hates the guy and it shows. He was very good in the game and REX said nothing! He will never get a shot !
we will NOT see Geno opening day as our QB. Sanchez was penciled in the second Garrard retired. Rex loves the guy no matter what! He also hates Gmac and that guy will never get a legit shot at anything with Rex.
