Sanu looked really good in the position drills yesterday. Fluid, athletic, with great hands. Great production in college Would love to get him in round 2, but that would probably require a trade up.

What constitutes a reach is what this is all about since you concede in your first sentence that going strictly by BPA is not going to make sense in certain situations. Again, the more important goal is to improve the overall talent level on the roster. Picking a BPA who at best is marginally better, and may not be an improvement at all over a player currently on the roster, will not improve the roster as much as picking a slightly less talented player who will be a huge upgrade over the current player or situation.

But... of course if "slightly" becomes more and more so, then we are talking a reach, and trading down for value becomes at least on that one situation a realistic and better alternative.

In short I don't think we really are in disagreement here; it's more about semantics.

we already have two first round contracts on our O-Line, how much money can you realistically have tied up there at once? I agree that a young, talented guard would be great for the franchise... so if Decastro is there you take him. Otherwise, I see very little chance that we go OL before the third round. Under Sparano, the Dolphins drafted Jake Long and Mike Pouncey, but other than those two, they did not pick a lineman before the third round. We already have pro-bowlers at LT and C, so to say that OL needs to be the #1 priority just isn't realistic. The first pick has to be the BPA among LB and WR.

Frankly I'm not a big fan of the whole Michael Floyd #16 fixation either. I mean yeah the guy is damn good but he's in the deepest position in the draft not to mention a deep FA WR class at a position that produces top players many many times every year.

There is no value in this situation. No need to waste your biggest resource on a guy that is easily replaceable in terms of finding a cheap and available substitute that will likely provide a significant portion of Floyd's potential output at a fraction of the investment.* The worst part is that when you pick Floyd you are effectively losing out on the ability to add an elite talent in a position that such players are scarcely offered. Potentially elite pass-rushing LB's don't come around nearly as often, and a potential perennial pro-bowl guard can tie together a team for 5+ years especially with the two pieces in Mangold and Brick already in place.

No, tempting as Michael Floyd would be, there is just too much chance to do good with the pick if it's spent on anything but Floyd. This is a year to go bargain-hunting a #1 WR. Giving up the bird in hand to try to find the pro-bowl #1WR in the bush is just counterproductive. Spinning the wheels in the mud.

*- To clarify, I understand that replacing a Floyd in the 1st with a Sanu in the 2nd will produce two similar-ish salaries, (both of which would be smaller than a potential free agent WR's salary would be. This seems to fly in the face of saying a 2nd or 3rd round receiver or a FA alternative would be "...a fraction of the investment." However the opportunity cost of that 1st round pick far outweighs the modest dollar amounts we're dealing with here.

I am with you on this one - its not a pick I would be annoyed about as I do think he will be very good but I would prefer to go with the best pass rusher available and if there is no-one the FO likes then the best OL prospect that isnt a centre.

Don't reach for a WR in the 1st round. Target Nick Toon in the later rounds.

I watched quite a bit of Melvin Ingram last season and he was VERY impressive. He would be a great fit on the Jets defense.

I think our first pick should be Ingram or Upshaw if either one of them is available in the middle. I think that everybody is also forgetting that we desperately need safeties too. I think the Jets should maybe try to trade up into the high second round to try and grab Barron. We cannot forget about this position. Its the position that hurt us the most last season besides RT.

I like Floyd a lot, but there are enough good receivers in the draft where I don't think taking him at 16 is the smartest thing. I'd rather go OLB in the first round and snag Marvin McNutt or Gerell Robinson in a later round.

It has dawned upon me how weak this team will be in 2012-13 unless we are extremely lucky in our off season moves. Therefore I see no reason whatsoever to reach for players.

We need the QB to develop
We need RB corps to produce on every down
We need to patch up parts of the Oline
We need a #1 (or #2) receiver option
We need the TE to have a better season
    we need D-line improvements
We need a pash rush from OLB
    We need to replace scott
    We need 1-2 safeties

    Did i forgot something?

The list of FA WR's is INSANE.......

I don't think drafting a WR in round 1 is smart at all....... They have to do their homework and hit it out of the park on either Barron or a Pass Rusher...

Decastro, if he falls is incredibly safe and brings the OL to a new level.

This makes not sense at all. Just because you have 2 spots on your OL in good hands and with big contracts, you have to find bargains in the other 3 positions. The Pats top 6 OLmen consist of 2 first round picks (Solder and Mankins) 2 second round picks (Light and Volmer), a multi-time All pro FA, and a low round FA pick up from another team, who has gone from the PS to a starter (Connolly)

The Pats have invested heavily in their OL and its paid off. They consistently have one of the better OL in the league....and one of the better offenses. But I'm sure that's merely just a coincidence.

I think our primary need in the draft is a young athletic beast linebacker. That would have the most impact on our team. After that, I think our next focuses should be on safety and OG, with Slauson injured and unsure how he'll come back, Moore aging, and we need depth anyway.

Drafting a RT would kind of be a waste because we most likely won't find somebody who can start right away, so I think if possible, we need to address that in FA, otherwise hope Hunter improves or Ducasse is ready to play.

We're stacked on the DL and corner, we've invested a lot recently in the RB position, I think we should look WR and TE with some of our middle of the draft picks (3rd, 4th, 5th rd etc.)

So basically to sum up my thoughts, I think we should be looking linebacker, safety, and guard in the higher rounds, and TE and WR in the middle rounds.

If Barron falls past the Jets pick, good chance he's a Patriot.

Thanks for an excellent post. Such is the reality of drafting wisely.

Nope you hit it just right.

The only thing you left out is that we need much tighter coaching also in 2012 to get better. The Jets were very poorly coached last season and that contributed heavily to the 8-8 and the collapse down the stretch.

Even the special teams were break even at best with all the turnovers.

I hate to say that list is not long enough. It should definitely include a new punter, arguably a new kicker, and unless the Jets think McElroy is the answer as #2 Qb, that has to be addressed as well. I would also add the OLB position at the least requires two new starters by opening day 2013. Optimally you would get both in this year, with one good enough to start, the other to learn to be Pace's replacement by 2013.

    Yeah. It's a long list.

I'm not saying that we don't need another OL, but suggesting that it might not be wise to draft one in the first given our other needs. We have 3 pro-bowlers on the line, and one of our guards apparently played the whole season with a serious injury (and did a decent job). Not to mention, we have a second rounder (Vlad) on the roster who was a victim of making the jump from a D-1AA school to the NFL without any training camp. Sparano's new man scheme should help everyone, especially Vlad. The Pats have the luxury in investing in their O-Line since they have a hall of fame QB who is surrounded by playmakers. We don't have any of those things, and comparatively, our O-Line is probably a lot better collectively than our skill players are.

Vladimir Ducasse was drafted in 2010, not 2011. He had failed to get on the field with a full off-season plus a full season. Yeah he had no off-season to speak of in 2011 but he was already a lumpy project by that point.

agreed and he will be an impact player in the NFL. I'd rather he be a Jet!
