classic message board thread, somebody supposedly knows somebody who supposedly talked to DBrick who supposedly said something that is then spun completely out of orbit and mangled into trashing players based upon nothing more than rumor, innuendo and people having their own preconceived biases.
he talked to dbrick all day, and that is the only thing he got? some stuff i've read in other stories and post? that conversation definitely never happened.
um, here's a thought, maybe there is nothing more to say than what the media has reported? ever thought of that? Besides even if they actually talked all day as opposed to hanging out after class for an hour and grabbing lunch/dinner, do you really think the only thing brick wants to talk about is the Jets locker room? I imagine he gets questions about that stuff every where he goes. I figure he just told his buddy about the OP the bits about the Jets.
I'll say it again. D-Brick, while improved, has not lived up to his potential as a premier LT. He has all the tools, just simply has not lived up to his potential yet - especially around run blocking. When somoene doesn't live up to their potential and they have the physical tools, you must question their motivation. With early-stage athletes, the basic equation is talent + motivation = ceiling. Well Mr. Brick is falling short of the ceiling and we know he has the talent. Therefore you must question his motivation. If this story is true, it's another clue into what drives Mr Brick. When you hear about a guy taking business school classes, who makes more money than the average CEO, you need to ask why. If he wants to better use his money as an entrepreneur or investor, there are better ways than going to business school. So the real question, is what does Mr Brick expect to be the end result of getting an MBA? Does he expect to have to apply for a job at some point and is preparing for life after the NFL? And what kind of job does one get with a Dowling MBA? Not one that would pay him much more than what he would perpetually gain from placing his 2008 after-tax pay (~$2MM) in a 4% investment. And he could always go back to getting his degree after the NFL. As fans we have the right to demand the best from the athletes we cheer for. And being that they get paid as much for being in the spotlight as they do for their talent, we have every right to question their motivations - as that is the indicator of the effort they're placing into reaching their potential to help us win. Now, I could be wrong too. Perhaps Mr Brick is a workout machine and we've overestimated his potential. Perhaps this post is another concocted story. Perhaps, he's doing the Shaq and getting a piece of paper for the fun of it and not putting in his time after class (3-4times the number of credit hours is recommended) I like the players I root for to be single-minded in their dedication to helping us win, and the time-reward for doing an MBA at Dowling for a multi-millionaire, with the potential to make significantly more money if he takes it to the next level, just doesn't add up. Further, anyone on this board with an MBA knows that you can learn anything you want through tutors and reading that you would in a formal program, and that the real value in the MBA is the networking and relationships you build. Does Dowling really help Mr. Brick to network - it's not like he doesn't already have access to the top people in the business world, and its not like a relationship with a marketing professor is going to get him a meeting with the CEO of a company he wanted to join. And by the way, the world knew that Vince Carter flying to UNC the day of a game 7 to pick up a piece of paper indicated motivational issues. Later on those motivations surfaced. With D Brick, or any athlete we cheer for making millions on our collective dime, we have the right to ask questions - becasue football is a full time job. So again, I'll phrase the question to those calling me ignorant - what do you think Mr. Brick is going to gain by spending his time in class right now, and based on those ends, are there better ways of achieving them?
And by the way, to the original poster - thanks for posting. It's great having greater insight into what hit me harder than the Pete Carroll collapse or Vinny's achilles.
Man, what do you want him to do in his free time? Play Madden and watch football videos all day? Or even worse, go out to clubs, get involved in shootings and organize dogfights. Surprise! Football players have lives outside football.
D'Brick won the offseason workout award last year. He came into camp bigger and stronger and it showed in his play. If he has another offseason like that he could be on his way to being dominant. More weight and strength will help him overcome his run blocking which was noticeably better this season than the previous two.
Brick is probably just taking classes to learn how to invest his money. Find out the basics so his financial advisors don't rob him blind. I doubt the guy has plans to be a CEO after his football days are over. Besides that won't be for another 10 years.
You honestly expect the guy to be in the weight room 16 hours a day when he's not sleeping??? This is the most idiotic thing I've ever read. There are more than enough hours in a day to workout AND go to school to take a class. Even if he works out for 6 hours, which is insane to even imagine, that still leaves plenty of time for him to have a life. Plenty of time. I can't fault a player for trying to better himself and prepare himself for life after football. More players should be doing this IMO.
Thank you... I was reading the posts so I would not repeat this point. It was apparent to me that he played here becase he had to not because he wanted to. That is probably still the case. I hope he retires so we can all move on....
