I was thinking of some cheap options to add depth, assuming we sing Harris, Tonio, and Braylon...I think Brad Smith gets a sick deal elswhere. RB- Michael Bush...Greene, Bush, and McKnight DE- Nick Eason and bring back Ellis on the cheap..Ellis, Devito, Eason OLB- Manny Lawson...Bye bye Bryan Thomas (or back cheaper) and JT (see ya fag)......Pace, Lawson (draft pick) and or BT S- Melvin Bullett... Pair him with Jimmy and let Pool go (although he turned it on later in the season
I'm starting to think with all the big body FA WR available, Braylon is more expendable though I wish we could keep him- Holmes just makes the big plays i.e. in NE and Pitt
I think we should make the Holmes / Braylon decision based upon who wants to be here more. Whichever guy is willing to sign cheaper should stay. We can get back to the other guy if we have any money left later.
I like Braylon a lot, but I think Holmes is a game breaker and that's who they are going to try and keep more. They're probably going to push hard for Holmes, something in the $8 million a year range.. probably similar or a little more than what Boldin got last year. Maybe like 5 years 37.5 million, with 15-20 guaranteed? (Boldin's deal was worth 28 over 4 years. His remaining 1 year at 3 mill, and a 3 year, 25 million dollar extension) Then with Edwards, they will probably let him go out and test the market and see what kind of price the market dictates. If they consider it exorbitant, they will let him walk or tag him and trade him to the team that is trying to sign him. If he gets offers that the Jets consider very fair, they can just let the other team do the negotiating for them and offer him the same deal.
That wouldn't be bad except for Lawson. We don't need another Vernon Gholston workout warrior deluxe at OLB. Lawson has done squat in the NFL.
Edwards made as many big plays as Holmes did. There's no reason to think if Holmes wasn't here that Edwards couldn't have made all those catches too, and he's a better blocker, less of an off-field risk, and I liked his fire. For as many big catches as Holmes made, he also dropped a lot in the playoffs and but for the stupid running into the punter penalty his dropped pass would have caused the Jets to lose before they even came back to Pittsburgh. If Holmes stays, they also need to make better use of his skills...more slants as well as more deep throws. I don't think Schotty knows how to utilize someone like Holmes.
Lawson would be an upgrade over Gholston - that's not hard to do though. Everyone assumed after the 2009 season where Lawson had 6.5 sacks that he'd become the player that the Niners drafted him to be. He actually took a step back. He's an incredibly inconsistent player with great measurables.
I think Bush is a "luxury" that we cannot afford (assuming an average increase in the salary cap, don't shoot me MB Green), money will be tight in that case and I think keeping LT one more year is the cheaper way to go. Eason- Good fit for our D, but wouldn't you prefer a guy who is under 30 to reload our defensive line? I think we should shoot a younger player here. Lawson- Yeah, hes a fast guy and we need one no question about it. Are the 49ers going to give him up and are the Jets able to acquire him cheaply? Melvin Bullett- who is he?
I'm going to use one of your lines here... "Clearly you know nothing about football" How can you say Eric Smith's only value is on special teams? He played his ass off late this season, and in the playoffs when used in the box. Rex found a way to use his strengths. I'd much rather have Smith than Pollard.
I agree with that statement but we are all speculating based on the past and it's a good starting point for a basis. If we continue the tend the cap has increased approximately 7%-9% each year. (In Millions) 2005 - $85.5 2006 - $102 (New formula with extension of CBA) 2007 - $109 2008 - $116.7 2009 - $127 2010 - NO cap but most teams worked thinking the cap was approximately $137M based on an approximate 8% increase. So for speculation purposes, if a new CBA is worked out and it follows the current cap trend (again - speculation), then the 2011 cap should be about $148M. Worst case scenario is the increase is applied to the 2009 numbers which leave a cap number of about $137M which is what it should have been for 2010 if a CBA was in place. Is that a fair enough assessment for a starting point on speculation? The Jets are at $121+M for 2011 with our current roster and the future contracts, etc http://www.nyjetscap.com/salary.html We should have room for our own people.
