Here are my latest targets: Ndamukong Suh DT / DE Adrian Peterson RB Brandon Marshall WR Trent Cole OLB AJ Hawk ILB Antonio Cromartie CB Stefen Wisnewski OG / C Ryan Mallett QB Anthony Fasano TE
Stefen Wisniewski Clint Boling [Fixes up both OG spots without breaking the bank] ------------------------------------------------------------------- Anthony Fasano ------------------------------------------------------------------- Antonio Cromartie Devin McCourty ------------------------------------------------------------------- And maybe some mid-tier OLBs to wrap up.
Suh gets $16-17 mil Marshall gets $7.5 mil under his current contract AP gets $13 mil from us under his contract (Vikings eat $2.4 mil pro rated) Cutting Harvin leaves us with $66 mil less $37.5 for our three additions leaving $28.5 mil so yes that will fit under our cap so stop trying to be such a know it all. If getting these players means letting Wilkerson walk so be it.
I don't think that's enough, your talking around 25 mill spent when we will have over 60 (Harvin cut). We could do all that plus a vet QB, Spiller/Vereen and sign Cobb/Marshall/Worilds or someone else in that range as well.
AP is pushing 30, Marshall is entering the twilight of his career. Mo prob hasn't even hit his peak yet. Why let Wilk go? I would understand if we were closer to contention but we aren't even close.
Marshall is only 30. With him and AP on our offense even Geno would have trouble screwing things up. Why let Wilk go? Just because he is under contract does not guarantee that he will be on our team beyond next season. We have the chance to lock up a better player (Suh) for several years right now and we can even get some value for Wilk in a trade. I will keep pounding the table on this until it is resolved but there has to be a reason that Wilk has not been extended yet. The longer this drags on the more we have to accept the possibility that he does not have a long term future here.
I wouldn't even look at a tight end, because we just drafted one that could be a threat, and we have Cumberland. BUT I'd take Brian Hartline....
Trade Wilk for a 1st and 3rd in this year's draft (He's asking for too much money) Trade Couples for a 2nd in this year's draft (He's not a OLB) Trading Couples and Wilk would also free up some more money Free Agents Suh Cromartie McCourty Worilds Harris (reasonable contract) Franklin Draft 1st Round - Gregory/Fowler (6th) and Marcus Peters (Wilk Pick) 2nd Round - Dorial Green-Beckham (5th) and Gurley (Couples Pick) Defense DL: Suh, Harrison/Ellis, Richardson LB: Gregory/Fowler, Davis, Harris, Worilds Safeties: Pyror and McCourty Corners: Cromartie, Peters, Millner, McDougle Offense WR - Decker, Harvin, DGB, Kerley RB - Ivory and Gurley
I tend to think that, free agents are what they are - performing up to the market value. And if you fill your roster with market-value players at every spot, you are destined to hit 8-8, if not lower. I don't like free agency as a whole because of that; you need to underpay the players to achieve something big. If you are a perennial title contender like Patriots, then things get a bit easy to underpay the player. As for the Jets, I still think the marquee production should come from the drafts, not from the free agency. Now if the demand is exorbitant - then the said draftee can go take a hike, but I don't know if Wilk is looking for JJ Watt money in the first place. [He had better not.] If the demand is reasonable, then it would be prudent call to keep him [and the nucleus of young talent] together. As for FA - that's what it is. I would use it to fill some voids that, given the choice, doesn't make too much difference between FA and draft, both in terms of cost-effectiveness and the price range.
lol we are not the only team with alot of cap space... in fact... all but about 7-8 teams have a lot of cap space.. lets please be realistic. 1. we are the jets, not the most popular (for positive reasons at least) team to play for. 2. we are not yet contenders, most big time free agents want a place they can get paid AND contend. & 3. you guys are naming 7-8 BIG NAME free agents to sign and are forgetting we still have to save big money for Mo Wilk. With that being said...yes we will have to spend a lot but we can spend it in different areas not just our secondary. no i don't want Revis. No i don't want Maxwell. and no i don't want McCourty (if he's going to ask for a shit load) We could realistically look to snag Kareem Jackson or Tramon Williams & Cromartie. Cheap and effective. Mike Iupati. Rahim Moore. Bruce Carter CJ Spiller Austin Davis Cecil Shorts
Have to? This isn't Russia. Is this Russia? Aside from Cromartie and MAYBE Spiller I don't want those overpaid bums anywhere near this team. If we want to win a Superbowl within the next decade we should swing for the fences. Why save money to pay the bums that got us to 4-12 when there is better talent available?
The more I read about Pernell McPhee, the more I feel like he'd be the ideal fit here. Even in his "down" years of 2012 and 2013 where he didn't have sack totals, he has always graded as a positive player against the run and pass, especially the latter. https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2015/03/03/free-agent-profile-pernell-mcphee/
And Suh? Yes, the team will make it's biggest splurge in free agency by upgrading the defensive line... That's definitely where they need the most help... Let's put 7M more per year on the cap and finally get an upgrade on that damn Mo Wilkerson... As a bonus, that extra money devoted to the DL will put them in great position to resign their other two young, homegrown stars too over the next couple years! Brilliant!
