IMO you're correct that Forte will be gone after this season, and perhaps Powell in another 2, maybe 3, and that McCaffery could help us going forward, and the his abilities as a return man would be a nice bonus. Still, they need a workhorse back and a power back. They can't go into the season with 5 RBs, and I doubt they'd go into it with 4 they played regularly. In the future they could get that power back and/or workhorse back, but what are they going to do in 2017 without one?
We didn't have one last year either. I think we finished 11th in total rushing yards and yards per carry with them despite our OL and QB limitations. Would I like a true power runner? Yes, of course. Can Forte and Powell do a job in a rebuild season? Well they did fairly well last year so there's no reason to think not, especially if you lighten their workload. If we did pick McCaffery though, I would say that long term we would need an Ivory-like workhorse alongside him for sure. We can't carry more than 4 RBs, if we go for a full back, though I agree. We can't fix everything in one year and next year will most likely suck big time.
You know I love Fournette, and if Mahomes or Watson isn't the pick at 6, then I like him. That said, one scenario would be they grab their QB at 6, then trade up into the bottom of the 1st round/top of 2nd and grab McCaffery if he's there. I'm not saying that's what Macc will do, but if he did do something like that, adding a future FQB and RB, the offense is basically remade in two picks. A question: If they did get Fournette, do you see Powell being used as his FB? From what I've seen of Powell this would be a good fit, and really make a potent combo.
I would be apoplectic if Mac traded up into the bottom of the 1st round to take McCaffery, and would want Mac fired immediately following that pick. The Jets should NOT trade up at all imo, but if they did, it should be either for a LT or pass-rushing OLB, not a RB who isn't even a workhorse 3-down back. No, Powell is no FB. He's 36 pounds lighter than Fournette. Forte would be a better in that regard since he's 14 pounds heavier than Powell, but in reality neither is suitable for the FB role. If the Jets draft Fournette, they need to either sign a FA FB or draft one that weighs in the 240-250 pound range. Fournette would make a better FB for Powell than vice versa.
No, I don't think it's short-term thinking at all. Long-term planning/thinking would be drafting a RB who is a starter, a workhorse type. McCaffery isn't that imo. There are a group of players any of whom I'd love to see come to the Jets. I'm not fixated on any one player. It sounds like you are, however, if you'd like to trade back up in the first to get McCaffery.
I don't like the idea of passing on Fournette because he may not be a fit for a west coast offense. Who is more likely to be here for the next 6+ years - Fournette or our coaching staff? if mac identifies him as a RB on par with AP then that would be the second steal we got at the 6 slot.
You're right. The best reason to pass on Fournette is concerns about medical history. If that checks out, he needs to be considered at 6.
Just to catch everyone up. Fournette: 40 yard dash - 4.51 Vertical jump - 28.5" Cook: 40 yard dash - 4.49 Vertical jump - 30.5" I expected Fournette to have a faster 40 time (mid 4.4) but I also expected him to cut weight like Cook did. Yet he came in weighing 5lbs heavier than his playing weight. Cook, who was already suppose to be the faster and more athletic guy just marginally edged out a guy that was 30lbs heavier... Fournette has the fastest 40 time of all RBs weighing 240lbs+ since 2003. I the combine didn't really help or hurt Fournette, but I see this doing only bad things for Cook.
Agreed, I really thought Cook would have been faster. Starting to lean more toward Fournette if we pick up a good FB. Really I'm falling away from RB that high all together when we can trade back and get an OT, Howard, McCaffrey, Watt...
I really not convinced D. Cook will ever be a good/great RB in the NFL. From my point of view he is grossly overrated. It wouldn't suprise me if C. McCaffrey is drafted well ahead of Cook.
