Well whatever it is I think the Jets can do something similar to what the Falcons do. While Forte and Powell aren't the athletes Freeman and Coleman are, they IMO have the better hands. I for one think it's time to feature Powell as the "guy" but for one have these guys out there at the same time, work them in as pass options. It's kinda weird the Jets actually replace Forte (who has damn good hands himself) with Powell...both are no slouch but I think having another option out there can help the offense.
Forte looked really good week one and not so bad week 2,,,,I don't think its him, I think the guy can still play and he is an excellent WR if they ever decide to actually throw him the ball
no jets RB will rush for much with dozier, winters, quale, and ben I. blocking. The jets FO has TOTALLY ignored OL for, oh, about ten years now.
Ivory has 20 carries for 43 yards, good for 2.1 yards per carry. He's been less than impressive and he burned out carrying the load after about week 5 last year. He's also making the 7th highest salary for a runningback in the NFL. We needed a youth movement at runningback, and at the very last a mid-round pick that could project into the starting role in a year. It's a runningback by committee league if you don't have a star, yet we're paying our two runningbacks a combined $7.75 million for production we easily could've gotten out of a rookie and a lower end free agent. Especially when you factor in that we are not letting Forte catch passes and running the dumbest plays imagineable to Powell. They should get creative. Put them both in the backfield in shotgun. Run double screens. Instead we're jamming Forte up the middle for 3 at most on every first down and letting Powell get destroyed on shovel passes on 3rd and 6's.
I don't know how you can judge him on the past three weeks, considering we've been down big in every game. He's been pretty effective running the ball when games are close enough to actually run it. Take away that Seahawks clunker and he's averaging a solid 4 ypc. The only game you can say he's really been a poor runner in was the Seattle game....and that's against a very good defense in a game we trailed by two scores seemingly the entire time. On another note, he needs to be involved in the passing game. We're taking away his best trait by not using him as a receiver.
The competition has no trouble stopping Forte and/or Powell, All they have to do is look at our game films, That's a problem with poor coaching...just try the same plays every week. And the OL doesn't get the push or blocking necessary to open up any decent hole. My wife and I can call 8 of 10 running plays including the direction.
Draw, off tackle left, off tackle right, draw; start pattern over again. I'd pay good money to see a sweep tossed in for good measure; just to keep them honest.
I've only seen it once so far. They really need to get Forte involved in the passing game as well. That was the whole big thing with bringing him in.
but Powell has been better in the passing game. Why get Forte involved just because. They throw to Powell more because he's playing better
Would love to see more 2 back sets, and definitely see more of Forte in the passing game. can't believe he hasn't been used more in passing. Jets also looked at Marcel Reese this week. not sure if he has anything left, but if he does, i'm interested. could help both from a lead blocking perspective, and a 2 back passing threat perspective.
Forte has (historically) been very good in the passing game. It's basically another threat. I know Powell is good as well, but it creates a tougher match up for the defense, when they have to account for Powell and/or Forte running the ball or catching the pass. Besides, some may disagree, but I haven't seen much consistency in run blocking, especially for runs up the middle. I'd like to see more screen plays designed for Forte, just because I think they will be more successful, plus he's tough to stop when running full speed.
Well. Putting them both in the backfield creates a mismatch on at least one linebacker in the defensive set. They both haven't been on the field at the same time I don't think this year. That seemed like the whole point of getting both of them, especially with a quarterback that can't throw the ball down the field all too much.
@DefenseWinsChampionships remember this conversation, where you called me clueless, misinformed, and a troll for saying Matt Forte wouldnt sustain his two game success? Good one. http://forums.theganggreen.com/thre...-opposing-nfl-trios.86848/page-4#post-3491453
I don't think Forte has been around to be one of 'his guys' I think he'd rather go with the veteran than the younger guys. Also I think he's thinking it's easier to bring a young guy off the bench like Powell than Forte. Forte has never had that role. And there is the money that Forte is being paid.
The Jets need to seriously address the offensive line in the next couple of drafts, taking a RB early would be a waste. Mangold's days are numbered with the amount of injuries he's had and the rest is just a bunch of patchwork.
