Herm can't get the credit, because Brick, Mangold, LW, and Brad Smith all made big contributions that year. He did a great job rebuilding the one element of the offense that Herm could give less a shit about - the OL.
You have to throw Bradway in the mix when discussing personnel and Herm. As a coach I think he was very effective as he worked his way up from an undrafted free agent to head coach, I think players respected that. His game day skills lacked and as I've mentioned before, I think having Chad on the field covered up a lot of Herm's lack of understanding game and clock management. I'd be interested to see Herm's record with and without Chad at QB, I bet the difference is pretty stark.
That is where Chad was great, he was a secondary Coach on the field... thats why he'd be an amazing coach after his career. Herm did suck when Chad was hurt. Yes, the backup QB is in, but it was more on Herm than the QB at that time. He is a great motivational guy and a great position coach, but he should not be leading a team. Its dangerous.
He didn't take over two dynasty teams he took over two very good teams and had a couple of decent years with the Jets one with the Chiefs and presided over their demise in both casses. Herm had little to do with the 2006 team as much of that team was left over from Groh and was drafted and assembled the off season after Herm was gone.
So Parcells built the '98 Jets even though the core of our team was holdovers from previous regimes but in a similar situation TB/Herm didn't build the Jets even though they re-tooled 2 times after reaching the playoffs in year 1 w/ mostly holdovers. What it boils down to is if Herm has success all that success is attributed to previous regimes and when a team has success w/ guys that TB/Herm brought in and then win they don't get credit either, right? it is like the thinking a few years ago that every time we won we did so in spite of Herm and every loss was b/c of Herm. So Dangerous that he's the ONLY coach in Jets history to lead his team to 3 different postseasons. Damn him for winning! We need Kotite back or better yet we should be satisfied w/ all that Mangini has done so far! Very good teams usually make the playoffs, right? When you miss 2 straight years before a new Coach arrives that would mean you aren't very good, right? Much of '06 was left over from Groh? Let's count -Chad -Ellis -Coles(BUT we reacquired Coles and gave up 1 of our great picks to get him so really this one doesn't count) Offensive starters: AG: 1 MT: 4 TB: 6 Defensive starters: AG: 1 MT: 2 TB: 8 Of 22 starters 14 were left from TB/Herm, 2 from Groh and 6 were new. TB: 64% MT: 27% AG: 9% Groh and Tannenbaum's players combined barely equal half of what they inherited.
I don't really get how Santana Moss was a great pick. He had one good year with us and has only 2 seasons in his 8-year NFL career over 1000 yards, and those 2 seasons are the only 2 that he's had over 61 receptions on the season. They were also the only 2 seasons where he had more than 6 TDs. And the Skins barely use him in the return game. We traded up for this guy, how was he a great pick?
