In case you have not realized you are now 5 years closer to be planted without seeing your "beloved" NYJs play in & win a SB thanks to Herms ineptiude. We would all be better if fans like you followed your beloved Herm to the KCCs
Champ I'd just like to say that your threads are a beacon of light in a desolate offseason filled with ridiculous signings/trades and mock drafts.
Lets see, the Pats won the division and won a playoff game while Herm led the Jets into the toilet and a spot in KC....hmmmmmmm
Hahahahahaaa... you are too much, my friend! Yes, I am five years closer to being planted. But I choose now to dwell on what may be from here on. I certainly hope you do too. We can't change the past... and we can't blame ourselves for the fact that Herm had many more shortcomings than we anticipated. But I do like the recent changes I see at the top by Woody and how that plays out down the food chain. It'll be a very interesting spring and I can't wait for TC again. Even my expectations have lowered significantly, so I see this September being much better than last September. And who knows? On any given Sunday...
First off, the reason many of us are "giving" EM a mulligan is that he was a DC for one year. Most that came down on Herm pretty hard waited for a pretty long time...after all the stupid playcalling...the dumb clock management...the on again off again tough training camps...etc, it wasnt until his third year that some came down on him..and his fourth and fifth year that the tidal wave to get rid of him began to swell. I expect that if the same pattern starts with EM, we will see the EXACT same timeline, if not quicker, to get rid of EM. This "EM seems to be getting the benefit of the doubt" stuff I read around here is pretty comical, considering he has yet to even run a practice. Herm Edwards was hired to coach a NFL team without ever drawing up a play...calling a play....calling a timeout...running a practice....in his entire life. That alone should have been grounds for people coming down on him his first year...when mistakes were made that we havent seen even around here..and we have had some pretty good comedians posing as HC's over the years. Herm had a leash that could cover a 50 acre farm. From the media that bought into his bullshit because he gave them their stories on a silver platter..to an owner that didnt know any better, Herm had any easy run until the media started to question their darling on some very bad decisions. The learning curve that Herm had here was very generous to say the least. During that time, Herm "used" that learning curve the way I "used" Barbara K. back in the 8th grade. He learned from none of his mistakes. He never called a play except for a knee in Pitt...and as I have mentioned here numerous times...probably didnt even know half the plays in the playbook on offense. He talked about plays that were called the way kids explain the cookie missing from the jar...it was foreign to him. You know, of all people, that our discussions with champ before last season all were basically "Hey..im rooting for Herm to succeed". I personally was rooting for him the way I root for an underdog. Thats pretty sad when hes your headcoach. I totally agree with your last paragraph. The horrible cap situation gives EM the chance to bring in his own type of players. It also gives him a pretty good bye on this upcoming year. Three years down the road though, If mistakes are made, the same lynching Herm faced with be faced by EM.
You know whats amazing 3rd, I look up and down these threads and Im lost. Some will say that unless your talking about herm, you have no input. I just cant take the "who would you take in the fifth round" stuff. I still enjoy a good battle with champ. I will say this, his posts are the ones I look for. To ignore the past of the Jets is to make the same mistake that got us to this point. Any regime that has the balls to come in and tear it down gains my respect right off the bat. Not sure wheres its leading...but its leading where their hearts believe it should go. At least there is a plan...and thats good enough for me.
I've enjoyed reading this informative thread. Don't have much to add except to correct your statement above. Herm was arguing with Bishop Harris about Lamont, not Jimmy Raye....
I've never been one to obsess over drafts, and I think alot of it has to do with the fact that the "offseason" started for me around week 6 or so this year. The salary cap speculation also drives me up the wall. Most of the people have absolutely no idea what they're talking about, and it'll all be worked out by the time the season starts anyway. Add in the fact that pretty much everything I could've hoped for coming into the offseason has come to pass so far and I'm just sitting back and enjoying it.
The funny thing is that MD does not even realize probably by game 8 of this upcoming season the KCCs fans will be screaming for Herms scalp
When you can finally sit back and accept that this is the true defenition of "re-building", which is a very hard thing to do as far as Im concerned, then you might as well just enjoy it. We havent seen this type of tearing it down and building it back up in decades. When the first person that ever used the word "re-building" used it to describe a sports franchise, this is what he meant. This team will easily have 17-19 new starters by the start of 08. To sit here and guess which direction this regime will go is good message board speculation...but impossible to understand until well after the draft.
Probably not until they have played several regular season games will you ba able to get a hint of the team for the future
You know what kills me about this is I was planning on being cremated and having my ashes spread over "Jets Stadium" by one of those planes towing an "At least I saw them win a SB" banner. Because of that SOB Woody Johnson my ashes are going to be dropped in "Giant Stadium".
Never ceases to amaze me when people get sucked into Champ/BIHW's inane threads. No matter how well reasoned, how intelligently thought out, how grammatically unlike a 5 year old, you're never going to get him to have a rational discussion with anyone he disagrees with. Never happened. Never will. This thread is pure trolling, plain and simple. As if anybody who cares enough to post here on a regular basis, about the team they love, would think about switching allegiances for a coach. This is pure Champ drivel. "I was right about Herm, you were wrong." It's not enough for him to be happy that the Jets are making major changes. It's him relishing in his opinion all Herm supporters are frauds. Which, by the same logic, should hold that no head coach other than Belechik, Gruden and Cowher should still have their jobs. After all, Carolina/Dallas/Denver, etc... fans are five years closer to being planted without seeing a SB. Of course logic and Champ have never really become friends. Ah, never ceases to amaze me when I get sucked into Champ/BIHW's inane threads.
Don't worry, Herm can't outrun his own history. He's extremely skillful at temporarily deflecting criticism by proclaiming idiotic things like, "What happened in NY, stays in NY," but he can't hide from what's on game film. It ain't gonna take those cowpunchin', corn-dog-rodeo attendin' Mid-westerners very long to realize they bought a "pig in a poke."
See, heres where I will differ from you and some that think herm will tank right off the bat. Herm does have a strong trait...even if its his biggest weakness (LOL..i know i might have lost some on that one...stay with me). He has the ability to delegate....he delegates authority because of his lack of knowledge of the x's and o's. Because of this, if a team is talented..which KC is talented, the team will still do well. The chiefs winning 10 games this year wouldnt surprise me. Its like the arguement of how did the jets get into the AFC championship game. Great coaching? or a very good offensive line, the leading rusher in the NFL and a new DC that worked magic for one year. Probably the latter. His nonsense will be swallowed for one year at least...and the players will love him. There may be the gafs that cost the team a win during the year. I wouldnt be surprised if the Chiefs do pretty well this year. Im looking at this as a long term enjoyment. I already have seen the way Herm can fool some for awhile. Herm will be laughing at the end of this year...we just have to wait a bit for the punchline.
I think it all depends on the first year. I mean, think about how thin Herm's margin for success was in NY. If John Hall doesn't nail a 50 yarder in Oakland in 2001 and if Wannstadt doesn't choke against the Pats in 2002 Herm would've been unceremoniously bounced out of town after the 2003 season. If the Chiefs go 7-9 or 8-8 missing the playoffs this year I think it's going to get very ugly, very quick for Herm out there.
