So do I sincel you know MHO of Herm was ZERO so for sure anybody should be able to beat that hopefully
Actually I think long timers on this board know we have a long haul in front of us & will give EM some time to turn it around so long as they see PROGRESS which is what some of us NEVER saw in Herm which is why we wanted him OUT
Champ, you of all people should know that you cant judge a book by its cover...just look at the Jets under Kotite and the Jets under Parcells one year later. Do I envision this kind of turnaround? Probaby not. At the same time, I personally feel that this team was pretty talented with horrible coaching. If thats the case, all you have to do is look at the number of DB's the Jets picked over the last 5 seasons and wonder were they all just average/poor picks? Or were they just never coached and brought along in a professional way. Im curious to see how good Miller is...how good Strait is....how good Rhodes is...how good Coleman is. As far as Im concerned, the jury is still very very out on all of them. Why did Ellis plunge during the Herm years...out of shape? Why did not one defensive tackle drafted or signed do anything truly positive over a 5 year span...besides Ferguson who was playing for a contract. Why did the jets have so many simular injuries on the offensive line...soft traing camps? If you look at the predraft analysis on many players the Jets picked over the last 5 years...you will find many complimentary things written about a decent amount of them...yet none flourished. Not one.
That's what I think Mangini will bring to the table immediately.. less tolerance for mediocrity. And he doesn't need any more experience to bring this to the table than the experience he already has, so that is what I expect will be the most immediate and noticible change with this regime. It's a good place to start. We build from there. Can't wait for TC to open.
I'm sure we'll be seeing some "Fire Mangini" threads after week 1 this year. However with all the holes and the salary cap mess the Jets have found themselves in I've sort of already mentally written off the 06 season. Actually written off is probably a poor word, I guess just different/lowered expectations. Instead of looking at it as a win is a win and a loss is a loss I'll be more looking for smart and decisive actions from the coaching staff, and actually "playing to win the game" even if the win isn't reflected on the scoreboard.
Totally agree. Thats the main reason I wouldnt just sit here and knock the roster. I just want to see some of these young guys better prepared...with a bit of fear in their eyes that poor training...poor performance, will not be greeted with a pat on the ass and a big smile when you come back to the bench. Accountability. Thats the biggest thing this team was lacking over the last 5 years. Thats what I look forward to the most. I just get the feeling...even if the Jets go 0-16, there will be many times this year when we shout out to the t.v...or at the game...good for EM...hes right damn it.
These are all excellent points. All you had to do last summer was take a drive to Hofstra one day and observe one two-a-day. One is all it took. I know there are those on this board who will rant incessantly that physical conditioning does not equate to winning. They're entitled to their opinion, but I think I now want to try a more demanding camp again. And it's not all about physical conditioning. I remember sitting in the stands at Giants Stadium back when Bill Parcell's was our HC and Bill Belichick was working with our DB's before the game started (during warmups). Belichick had what I'd call an interception drill he used to do with the DB's. They'd run sideways in front of him and he'd drill the ball (with a lot of zip) somewhere near them as they were running so they could attempt to catch this zinger coming their way. Ray Mickens and a bunch of others mad a game out of it and it looked like fun. I'm not saying Herm didn't have that kind of thing going on but Mangini was around Belichick enough to have picked up on a lot of these little drills. ANd he seems like the kind of guy who'll insist on this as well, at camp and before games. I'm only using this one observance as an example of what can be done to combing physical conditioning and skill-polishing timing to get the job done. I expect EM to be a much better coach all around than Herm ever was.
The move from college to pro is hugh really hugh & that is why the draft is like playing BJ at your local casino. Look back & see all those nice words written about Blair or Russel Carter or Johnny Lam Jones. Certain positions are really instictive like the DBF where you have it or you do not so the guys you singled out coaching or no coaching fall into the NOT have it catagory sorry to say. I regret to also tell you IMHO you are vastly over rating the team. Here is how I would judge the talent. I would ask whom is tradeable & go thru the roster & I would find JV & JA & then NOTHING. That is not the makings of a talented team is it? Yes maybe Ellis took the year off so we will certainly see about his real ability come game 1 will we not? Most fans have a terrible flaw to think everbody on there team is super human & those on every other team are runts. To analyze a team you most do it with your head NOT your heart which is what you are doing IMHO. Then this board makes poster think they have to prove they are the biggest NYJ fan by constantly posting ONLY pro NYJ things that gives them a incorrect reading on the team. Sorry if the above sounds so harsh but it is the way I see it
That's what I'm looking for too. Even Bill Belichick will agree that you're not always going to be the winner of a game even though you outplayed the other team. But he will agree that you'll win a high percentage of games if you just stick to the principles. In the end, it's the percentages you're after... the chance of tipping the odds in your favor through decisively pursuing the win as opposed to simply saying, "You play to win the game" and then not really doing that.
Not harsh at all..np. Hey, the bottom line is this. If my son was given the list of players to be drafted over a five year period...and sat down and circled lets say...40 names..by luck...he would pick at least a couple of stars. The Jets over a 5 year span drafted about..about 15 db's and safteys. They all are not NFL material? Dont misunderstand what Im saying. Im not saying that Rhodes, Coleman, Strait and Miller are probably all great players. Im saying that one or two of them might be...maybe they all are. Who knows. The way this team was coached the last 5 years regarding player development...Im just keeping my mind open to the possibility that EM can bring out in players what Herm never was able to bring out. EDIT: The true disgrace of that last paragraph was that both Herm and Donnie were db coaches. Just reread what I just wrote 7 or 8 times if you ever wondered if the Jets made the right decision.
Since Day One as a poster here, I've been aware of your strict reality check and I've come to accept your opinion on this most of the time. I also think that a good coaching staff can get an awful lot out of their "runts" too. So yes, while we hold no trumps or advantages or crystal balls when it comes to drafting talent, I do hold out hope that this coaching staff can get the most out of whatever "runts" we pick up and that's all anyone can ask.
I agree that EM & his staff may spot talent better then Herm did but OTH none of those players mentioned will be good enough to get us to promised land as they have not shown the ability to date. I would be shocked if after year 2 of EM they are all gone except maybe DS who displayed some ability
I to certainly hope EM is far better evulator then Badway & Herm were. I was just attempting to inform JW that what he reads should not affect his judgements which appears to be what he is doing. Beside taxes & planting there are just no guarantees in life.
Rhodes and Miller don't display some ability? Those kids will benefit the most from EM's coaching, IMO.
We disagree. I'm high on both. I'm not sold on both, mind you. There's a difference. But I think the raw talent (and not so raw anymore) is there and can be cultivated by the right coaching staff. Henderson saw it and started working it, hopefully it continues. I see those two as Jets for a long time.
You liked what you saw from Strait? IMO he will never be anything more then a dime/nickel back at the very best. To me he looked very slow and unable to match up with anyone in man coverage.
