Ahh the old straw man argument, or question in this case. Do you realize how many good young assistant coaches there are in the NFL that are looking for that one oppty to be a HC? I'll give you a few who just became HC's and the Jets should have been all over them. Bruce Arians. Not a young guy but he's coaching in the toughest division in football and he's already making a name for himself. Not to mention what he did as an interim coach in Indy with a team that was awful the season prior. He would've brought instant credibility and discipline to this franchise. Bradley in Jax is another prime example. That guy's going to be a real good one. If I spent the time to look through the assts and coordinators on all 32 teams I could give you a list of at least 10 more names that I'd want. Now I'll flip the script on you. The bigger question is Why would you want to keep a coach who isn't even getting his team to the playoffs? This is a results oriented business. You are what your record says you are, as Parcells famously said. That's the ultimate sign of mediocrity with no marked improvement. So why would you want to keep Ryan if he doesn't make the playoffs for 4 straight years?
I do belive he should get fired if he gets like four wins , but not if he falls short when he is 21 M under the cap and its not in his power to use that cap himself, so if he falls short like 9-7 no playoffs i think not all of the blame but a bit part of it falls on the front office , we sacrificed this years win now for a future cap space and that doesnt rely on the coach decission himself. If it was up to Rex revis would be here right now and we would be in the playoffs.
I don't accept that a losing record or no playoffs means Ryan gets fired. I think Johnson's letting Idzik try to build a winning team his way, and that includes deferring to Idzik on most roster moves. A huge impediment to a playoff season this year appears to be looming at the Cb position. Does anyone here seriously believe that if the shots were being called by Rex Ryan, that the Cb roster would be what it is now???? Of course not. That's on Idzik, and to some extent Woody (meaning on not keeping/not trying to get Revis). Another is whether Smith ends up holding back the team. No one here knows the extent to which Rex is the one calling the shots here, either, instead of going all in on Vick. Is this Idzik, too, or perhaps Marty? On the other hand another potential area of difficulty, that being overall team discipline, would seem to be Ryan's responsibility. So, the overall record alone will not determine if Ryan gets fired. It will be why and how the team arrives at a poor record that could lead to his firing. As it stands now I am a supporter of Marty at OC. I believe that if the offense is not at least mid-pack this off season, it will not be because of poor coaching. It has been problematic in the past that Ryan does not know how to assess, develop and run the offense, and particularly the Sparano hiring was a disastrous move by him. But we are past that. I have also been troubled by the gradual decline of the defense's performance, but again blame that more on a deteriorating roster. How much of the blame for that deterioration should be blamed on Ryan is frankly not clear to me. But I can't lay it all on Ryan no matter what. So there's that, too. On balance, despite not making the playoffs for now three years in a row, I am more inclined to keep Ryan than after 12, for example. Last year I think he did a good job with the record considering the weak roster, and gets credit for bringing in Marty and letting him take over the offense. Going forward for me it will depend on who appears responsible for any problems that hold the team back. So don't count me as one hoping he gets fired, at least not for now.
We're a team that's in the middle of a rebuild, with an unproven, second-year QB. Wins/Losses or playoffs shouldn't primarily determine the future of the HC, it should be progress made by the team (of which the W/L column is certainly a part). If we look like we're improving Rex stays, if we don't then Idzik/Woody need to look at the reasons why and determine the future from there.
While i have been critical of some things Idzik has done and not done, I have been loathe to conclude he will fail and should be fired, and I am not at all of that view even given the problems we are seeing with him. I hope he will learn from the situation with the corners, for example, and he may well. But it is not inconceivable Johnson may tire of him before he tires of Ryan, under certain circumstances if they come to pass.
Pretty Dumb argument to want Rex fired. Coaching is about expectations not making or not making playoffs which is somewhat out of control of the coach. The question is how they do based on the talent they have. The Jets were expected to win three games last year they won eight Rex keeps his job. Houston was supposed to contend for the superbowl they suck Kubiak loses his job.
Wow great memories. I almost forgot how fat Rex used to be. Holy ****! I don't want to see him go. He led us to some great times, and in order for him not to go we have to get back on that track. If not, thanks for what you've done here, but time to move on to a coach who will lead us to winning again. That's just how it works. I still believe in Rex but this season looks tough to get a record good enough for him to stay, which scares me.
Very dumb response on your part. Coaching IS ALL about winning and making the playoffs, everything else is secondary. You just made my point for me. Kubiak loses his job because Houston didn't win enough games and did not make the playoffs. Exceeding expectations never enters the equation if you win and put yourself in position for making the playoffs. Stick to handball. According to your logic, as long as Rex exceeds expectations, even though expectations are for 3 wins and he ends up winning 4 games, then he should stay on the job. Completely flawed logic and in that scenario you better believe he should still be fired. Go root for the Cowboys if you want 8-8 every year.
kubiak did an awful job with loaded teams. He had playoff caliber teams most of his time there and only made it twice. Never even made a title game. Rex with those teams has a ring. rex has done an amazing job the last two years and as we get more talent we'll win big with him.
Manning was never gonna sign with the Jets. He was looking strictly at teams one player (QB) away from a SB run. Broncos, 49ers...
Ignorant statement on your part. When you are in rebuild mode your coach has more leeway based on expectations. You need talent to win and it is not Rex's job to acquire the talent. 2011 is more on Rex than the last two years when he did more with less. Last year was his best coaching job. Show me an organization that changes coaches every five years I will show you a losing organization.
