I agree. I thought Hobbes's post was a throwaway. He can't really mean the system would cover for someone who totally sucks.
having a lot of trouble figuring whether to go with the opinions of ESPN's football scientist or those of Rex Ryan, Mike Pettine and Dennis Thurman on this one maybe we should start a poll
He does. For the past couple of weeks at least, he's played very physically at the line, jamming his receivers to disrupt their timing. We've seen none of that from Wilson, and it's a huge part of what makes Revis so successful, as well as a tell tale marker of the plays on which Cromartie has solid coverage. I don't know if Wilson has just shown an inability in practice thus far (which I'm sure they're working on) to play true bump and run, but he's been getting killed because he exerts absolutely no influence on the receiver and thus on the play pre-catch.
It's possible both are right. The guys from ESPN are using 2009 stats for their argument. Anyone who's a Jets fan and has been paying attention can tell you that Coleman has looked MUCH better this season (after a worrisome first game to the preseason, no less) than he did last year. Those guys just proved that Coleman was a liability last year. The Jets CS trusts him this year. Two different situations.
Final word goes to Rex I think. http://www.newyorkjets.com/news/art...nference/5eb92619-2605-400c-85de-b4a850b50c73
Was he involved much against the Ravens and Pats? I was rewatching the Fins game earlier for the first time since gameday and I kept an eye out for Coleman.. From what I saw and took mental note of, he was only on the field for 14 plays: 2 run plays he was not involved in 4 pass plays that targeted Marshall (covered by Cromartie) 2 plays where Henne was pressured and threw the ball away (possibly just really really bad throws) - nothing to indicate Coleman's coverage was tight 1 play where he tripped, giving Miami a first down 1 pass play to Bess, caught - not sure about his coverage here either 1 weak blitz by Coleman 1 - What looked like good coverage of Fasano 1 - Stops Brown inbounds - good play 1 - Interception - ball broken up by Pool but still a good play I know he really stepped up in the last minute of the game, but unless he was that much better against the Ravens or Pats, that's not enough to entice me to join the newly-formed Drew Coleman Fan Club.
The really strong vibe coming out of the Jets at this point is that Lowery doesn't have the speed to play CB in a heavy man-to-man defense. They don't think he has the recovery speed needed to play the position. I'm guessing he's headed for safety or moving to a team playing cover 2.
That's been the book on Lowery since coming out of college. Great coverage skills, lack of elite speed.
There's a reason why you didn't see him targeted as heavily as Wilson. He was engaged in true bump and run, which Wilson doesn't do yet. He was able to disrupt Bess and Hartline at the line, and Henne never even looked in their direction. As far as the play where he tripped? Watch again. Polite starts inside on the play with Wilson lined up on him. Coleman starts outside, has good coverage on the outside receiver, and then suddenly Wilson switches coverage. We did see some zone, so it's possible that Wilson's coverage was fine, but it looked like he just switched up his man coverage. It was when Coleman tried to recover to get back to Polite that he tripped. There's no Drew Coleman fan club. Trust me. He's looked better for two weeks, but nobody is suggesting he's a good corner. He's just better at getting disruption right now, which is going to be key against a WR like Parrish. Hell, that's almost the whole game against Parrish. With safety help up top, he looks like a manageable option right now against the Buffalo offense.
The one play by Coleman this year, I can not get out of my head, was his tackle on Faulk. Faulk was running a sweep to the sideline and Coleman came up and made a sweet tackle on him. A tackle which incidentally knocked Faulk out for the season, maybe put an end to his career. I think we have all noticed Coleman is much better so far. Maybe he is getting it. All I hear from the coaches about Coleman, is he is one of the better athletes on the team. Maybe it is translating finally on the field. I don't know. Coleman was putrid last year and the year before and the year before that. That said, just through the eye test he is tackling better and his coverage is better. I would rather Wilson have the trial by fire but I will take a wait and see on this. One thing for certain is, the Bills are not going in AC's direction with DC on the field.....lol AC/DC as the corners.......
Yeah this is what I was getting at. Coleman is playing because he has shown some ability that Wilson doesn't have. I don't know what is different but when I see Coleman on the field right now i'm not crapping my pants. Besides falling all over himself on that one play against the Dolphins I have been impressed. As I have said, he is nothing special but he should be able to get the job done for a game.
