It was 4th down and they were down by 25 points. If he threw the ball away in that situation to preserve his stats I would call him the biggest pussy QB in the league. Once again, it was 4th down.
Did someone just suggest he throw the ball away on a fourth down in the waning minutes of a 25 point game?
I was not ready to totally sh!t on Bowles until this this insanely stupid move. There is no reason not to let the kids play, so we can see what we got.
Sounds like they have no choice at this point.... Todd Bowles opens possibility for Geno Smith start for Jets 7:07 PM ET Rich Cimini ESPN Staff Writer Facebook Twitter Pinterest Email print comment One day after giving a vote of confidence to embattled quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, New York Jets coach Todd Bowles backtracked on his commitment, hinting Tuesday he could turn to Geno Smith this week. Bowles also expanded the quarterback controversy to four players, saying it's "definitely possible" that Bryce Petty and/or Christian Hackenberg could play before the end of the season. The coach backed Fitzpatrick after Monday night's 28-3 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, saying, "Fitz will be back next week. ... Fitz is our starter." Some 18 hours later, Bowles was waffling, which is out of character for him. "First of all, after the game, it's always going to be status quo because I'm never going to tell the media anything before I meet with my coaches and my GM and the rest of the staff, so everything is status quo until we have our meeting (Tuesday night)," Bowles said. Fitzpatrick leads the NFL with 11 interceptions and he has led the offense to only three touchdowns during the current four-game losing streak. Bowles conceded he "re-visited" the matter after his post-game news conference. He pulled Fitzpatrick midway through the fourth quarter of the blowout, inserting Smith, whose only series ended with an interception. "He did show some promise when he was in there," Bowles said of Smith. "He understood the game plan and he did good for that drive he was in there." Asked directly if Smith could start Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens (3-3), Bowles said, "We have to talk about more than that. There's a possibility every week there will be some changes made, player-wise." Jets coach Todd Bowles that backup quarterback Geno Smith did "show some promise" in his brief appearance in Monday night's loss and that at change at the position is possible. Denny Medley/USA TODAY Sports Bowles didn't sound pleased that Smith told ESPN sideline reporter Lisa Salters before the game that he was "getting antsy" to play. "I don't have any thoughts on backup players saying anything," he said. "They're backups for a reason. If they get a chance to play, they better prove themselves to be worthy of playing regardless of who that person is." Smith also attracted attention on the sideline by throwing his baseball cap and tossing a cup of ice on the field moments after Fitzpatrick was intercepted at the end of the third quarter. Clearly frustrated, Smith paced sideline, waiting for his shot, which came shortly after that. "I don't think anything of it," Bowles said of Smith's sideline behavior. At 1-5, the Jets have virtually no shot at the playoffs. Since 1970, only two teams have rallied from a 1-5 start to make the postseason. With no quarterback of the future, the Jets are open to auditioning Petty and Hackenberg. "It's possible," Bowles said. "We've still got some stages to go before we get to that point, but it's definitely possible."
Any bets it was the shit storm he created with his "Fitz will start" nonsense? From what I saw on all the sports TV this morning, Bowles was being hammered relentlessly about this. No one in the sports media world could make the case for Fitz starting another game. The programs sounded a lot like this message board! It was spooky to say the least. I also wonder if Woody kinda stepped in and said:" WTF are you smokin?" For all intent and purposes, Fitz's run here is most likely over.
the only argument ,and its not a strong one, for starting fitz again is they are coming off a short week. if bowles came out and said fitz gets one more game because we will be short a day of practice and want to be have as much time as possible to prepare for a change at qb I would almost buy it. almost
It starting to feel like if Bolwes doesn't bench Fritz, the choice will be make for him and he will be heading for the door.
Since when does a QB have to force it somewhere when running isn't an option on 4th down? EVERY TIME. Duh.
It may have been the sports media that made Bowles waffle, but I think more than likely it was either Mac or Woody who jumped down his throat and threatened his future with the team.
Good point. As far as draft position goes, I hope they will start Fitz. That would guarantee another loss. In terms of what's best for the team this season and giving the team any hope of salvaging some pride and positivity, I think Geno should get the start. If they start Fitz, they might as well just forfeit.
QB is an organizational decision. No practice today so there is time to confer. Expect a change Sunday.
Well considering Bowles punts with 7:30 left in a two-score game it would fit in with the rest of this gutless team.
Can't wait for Francesa to whine about this since he today basically dared Bowles to 'have conviction' and stick with Fitz.
You're just a hater. It was 4th and 11 and he had to throw it. I would argue that it was a good pass and our receiver allowed that INT. If you look at it objectively you can see why it was his fault. Gene has never had a good complement of receivers - ever. He was always having to force the ball to guys with no separation. Let's see what he has now. I think he'll be a lot better than he was as a rookie and second year with the worst receivers in the league.
Good QBs have a clue and try and get the first down. It was 4th down! - do you understand if you throw it away the other team gets the ball? That pick was the rookie's fault. At least try and understand the situation.
