He has looked decent for the last half of last season and the first half of this one, but it still seems like a big punt they're taking. $24M is guaranteed.
Congrats to the Harvard man. I was worried before the season that the Bills would be in the "Suck for Luck" running.
Good way to spend your money Buffalo! Great job by Fitzpatrick and his agent to get this done after only 6 games.
Just goes to show what a desperate need for quarterbacks there is in this league. Four QBs get drafted in the first 12 picks (one a 2nd round prospect), a QB with 7 career starts gets $65 million, and two mediocre QBs (Carson Palmer and Ryan Fitzpatrick) get four- and six-year deals, respectively. Pretty soon, someone's going to sign Brett Favre through his 50th birthday.
Hope he contuse the trend of performance drop off following a contact extension. Romo, Chris Johnson etc.. Hell, you could even throw Manning onto that list.
Thats actually a fair deal for both sides. Its not as much as you guys think. The guarentee money is all that matters....Basically we could cut him 3 years into that deal with him making an average of 11 million per year. Way under the going rate for what he's doing right now in respect to comparing him to other QB salaries. Look at that deal Kolb got for showing nothing and still doing nothing....
Damn shame cause I like Jackson, but after Chris Johnson, I would never want to see my team sing a RB to a big money deal ever again.
Agreed, the market and big $ deals for RB'S will eventually go down a bit. As for Freddie he had his contract restructed last year to make almost 2 million through 2012 and that came with a $1,100,000 signing bonus. Peanuts compared to his performance. But at 30 years old (although he doesn't have as much wear and tear as the average 30 yea old RB) I doubt OBD hands out a big deal especially when we have other YOUNG playmakers that will need contracts restructed and extended. We may put the franchise tag on him for 2012 them release him after that season.
Yeah signing Jackson is a HUGE risk. I know he doesn't have a lot of wear and tear -- but he's 30. Johnson deserves a contract. Wasn't sold on him last year -- but he's shown he's worth money this year.
That's about the same overall money and more guaranteed than Rodgers got in his last contract extension. Pricey.
I think it's a mistake. He's played pretty well, but he makes a lot of bad decisions with the ball. He was fortunate early in the year that they didn't bite him and his team in the ass, but those things even out. I'm glad for him, but it seems like another misstep for the organization.
