I love when fans complain about the teams money......They should hire someone to stand behind you at the store and shit on every purchase you make.
Lol Fitz under the microscope already with second day of training camp... Thank God for TC and Pre Season where our #1 players will develop some rhythm Fitzmajick wont happen overnight BUT SIX WEEKS TO GO TIME ...YESSSS
Good move. I think it's a good middle ground and a good message to Fitzpatrick: We appreciate what he did last year, but if he wants to prove that he is our answer and deserves the big payday, he needs to show us again and prove that he isn't just a flash in the pan. The stakes are higher this season: He needs to bring us to the playoffs as a serious contender. Backing in after winning a tiebreaker and then getting pummeled in the Wild Card is not an improvement and doesn't count.
That's a good deal. In fact, this 5M next year sealed the deal for me that it's good. The core of the original offer was not to underpay Fitz in 17 and 18. It was to spread the $$ so that nobody needed to be cut or restructured. This contract achieves just this: Fitz gets what he wants (saving face for QB); Jets get to spread the $$ so nobody needs to be cut. This is perfect.
Despite spending a whopping $12 mil in valuable cap space after this year we are back to square one with no QB. Half of this money will count against next year's cap making it more difficult to find a replacement. We gave Mo more money that JJ Watt is getting. Let that sink in for a moment. While I like the Matt Forte signing we didn't really add anyone else to a team that missed the playoffs last year. Snacks was a huge part of our defense, keeping him would have been cheaper than keeping Mo and / or Fitz. Two words - Chris Hackenburg
I don't like the work Macc has done, but reading Hasty's ill-formulated opinions gives me hope. Mo was a necessity. I can't believe he got done. No matter what any moron thinks, the unathletic nose tackle did not make the amazing defensive ends look good. Teams are smart to find young RBs, but when the Jets go after the veterans, they are finding the ones that are certain to perform, minus Johnson who Rex and Idzik let know was not expected to perform. Drafting an ill-thought QB is a gigantic gamble- unless you draft him late in round 2 and he's grasped the pro style offense well. I'm waiting for your expert opinion on Lee again. You're probably one of the worst posters on this forum, and people suck your dick for it.
Cap is set to rise significantly next year from $155m to $166m - so Mac took that into account and structured the deal in a way that he did not need to change anyone else's - smart IMO We still paid Mo (5 years, $85M; $37M guaranteed) less than others paid DL this off-season, the JJ Watt deal was done when and what was the Cap then - times move on Jaguars sign DE/DT Malik Jackson (6 years, $90M; $42M guaranteed) Eagles re-sign DT Fletcher Cox (6 years, $103M; $63M guaranteed) Muhammad Wilkerson is receiving less guaranteed money - all that is really important in player contracts - than both of these players, which makes it a good deal in 2016 - again Mac took that into account - smart IMO. The deal the Giants gave Snacks (5 years, $46.25 million; $24 million guaranteed) and was waaay to rich IMO. Not add anyone? We drafted several players - including a punter as not 1 poster here wanted to retain Quigley - Jenkins will make a lot of plays as our starting OLB, I think Lee will give us speed and flexiblity and did add some FA depth signings on the DL to replace Snacks and Douzable - I think we also added more speed to OLB with Bishop and dealt with the Brick retirement as effectively as possible. Just wish we added more OL depth but then can't get everything Who else would you have added given most people think they know 19/22 starters? Hack was someone Mac said he wanted all through the draft - this will go a long way to defining his ability to identify QB talent but with that we need to wait and see.....
Free agents I would have signed (at the money they got): Keleche Osemele LT - 5 years $60 million (Avg $10 mil) - vs Clady net $2.5 mil Mario Willians OLB - 2 years $16 million (Avg $8 mil) - Mo Wilkerson 1 of 2 Eric Weddle S - 4 years $29 million (Avg $7.25 mil) - Mo Wilkerson 2 of 2 Danny Trevethan ILB - 4 years $28 million (Avg $7 mil) - Fitz 1 of 2 Donald Penn RT - 2 years $14 million (Avg $7 mil) - cut Breno net $2 mil Haloti Ngata - 2 years $12 million (Avg $6 mil) - vs Steve McClendon net $2.5 mil Prince Amukamora CB - 1 year $5.5 million Richie Incognito OG - 3 years $15.5 million (Avg $5.167 mil) Nick Perry OLB - 1 year $5 million - Fitz 2 of 2 Matt Forte RB - 3 years $12 million (Avg $4 mil) - Jets signing net zero Nick Fairley DT - 1 year $3 million Chris Long DE - 1 year $2 million Garrett Graham TE - 1 year $800K Zach Mettenberger QB - 4 years $2.4 million (Avg $600K) The draft (assuming no trades): Round 1 Laquan Treadwell WR (went to Vikings at 23 overall) Round 2 McKenzie Alexander CB (Vikings at 54 overall) Round 3 Jordon Jenkins OLB (Jets actual pick) Round 4 Andrew Billings NT (Bengals at 122 overall) Round 5 Christian Westerman OG (Bengals at 161 overall) Round 7a Scooby Wright III ILB (Browns at 250 overall) Round 7b Charone Peake WR (Jets actual pick) I think we would have a shot at taking the AFC East with these guys.
Well to be fair I could care less what money they spend but I do care about how it affects the salary cap and roster construction. That said with the amount of huffing and puffing there's been you'd think this was some dopey 3-36 deal where we'd have dead money on our cap for years. There's no such thing as a bad one-year deal, even in a cap system.
My A+ grade was only referring to how he freed up 12mm for Fitz. I too have mixed feelings about the Mo contract but I've concluded that this contract actually makes him MORE TRADABLE and therefore more of an asset than he was before the contract. The idea that he makes more than JJ merely indicates the high rate of inflation in NFL salaries. This implies that in a couple years, Mo will look much cheaper--if he's still playing high-caliber, it may even appear to be a team friendly contract.
No offence but I'm glad your not running the FO - you signed no QB so our starter would be either Geno or Mettenberger - given the lack of love for Geno I assume your thinking is the other guy would start????? No team who actually tried to pick him up on waivers intended him to start (San Diego / Bengals & Giants) Your FA pck ups are all 1-2 year loaners who predominately are nearing the end of their careers and will not help long term success Don't dislike some suggestions but lets focus on the ones that others might find questionable Mario Willians OLB - Assume a typo and Mario Williams - Played OLB in Houstonm some time back as I recall but is listed as a DL and is over 290lbs so would not be able to cover TEs - Oh is he not the one who only wants to rush the passer and complained about being asked to cover? Per Walter Football Mario Williams used to be a great pass-rusher, but now that he's 31, his best days are behind him. Even worse, he completely quit on the Bills last year. It was so blatant that the Jets were even talking and laughing about it before their game. Eric Weddle - We signed Gilchrist to a decent contract last year and have a 1st rounder who began to play like one at the other spot - do you sit one or play three safeties? Donald Penn will be 33 this year so is a short term as is Incognito (who re-signed before FA so we would be losing draft picks for tampering here). Ngata wasn't anywhere near the player who dominated the line of scrimmage for Baltimore years ago. Ngata was still solid at stopping the run, but at 32, his pass-rushing skills have eroded. Prince Amukamora - Amukamara always plays well on the field, but he has played just one 16-game season since being taken in the first round in 2011. He missed five games this season with a pectoral injury, and he played just eight in 2014 - has missed 25 games in his 5-year career, including 13 in the past two seasons. We already have a CB taken in the first round who will cost less and is brittle but talented. Nick Perry - OLB - Has never lived up to his draft status and hasn't recorded more than four sacks in any of his four NFL seasons, and while statistics are sometimes misleading, his tape backs up his lack of production and we got more out of Q. Nick Fairley - would not just signed his second 1 year prove it deal if teams weren't concerns for his lethargy issues. Zach Mettenberger QB - 4 years $2.4 million (Avg $600K) - Free agent Zach Mettenberger's 16.5 "total QBR" is the worst by any quarterback with at least 10 starts since the invention of the statistic in 2006. QBR is a labyrinth, impersonal, exclusive and confusing statistic, but it's noteworthy any time someone is the worst in something. Naturally, the man replacing Mettenberger, Matt Cassel, has the second worst QBR over the past two years. The point is, Mett's supposed "potential" is largely a myth. Mett might get claimed on waivers, but he's not going to be handed anyone's No. 2 job. Also which FAs we signed /retained would you cut to sign the players listed as I count at least 9 cuts needed to get to 90 on the roster.
Fit'z replacement is on the team already Hack or Petty, or a draft pick, or a cheaper vet. or Geno if he gets his shot to play this year some how... and isn't it a one year deal? how is half of it going against next years cap if were paying it this year? We have our core and didn't have much money to play with.. i think Mac did pretty well with FA. no need to bring in many more people, especially when your bread and butter is drafting.. he's a scout...remember? Snacks was cool but tbh we'll be just fine. McLendon will be solid too just because of the group around him.. and if not, we have 3 great DE's and 2 can easily play the middle if needed on a run down. Hack is going to be groomed.. hit or miss, i don't hate the pick.. but i think he's going to take another year or 2 to develop.
Finally! Resigning Fitz is the right thing to do and keeps the Jets on track with what they are trying to do. If you look at this rationally there was no way the Jets were going to contend without Fitz under center next year. I'm not saying they are a playoff team but I'm guaranteeing they weren't going to be without him. The Jets got more than adequate play from him last year. It's really unfortunate that last game was such a stinker. However, to get the best out of Decker and Marshall (and hopefully Amaro and others) the team needed the trusted veteran in there. Geno's career has been a disaster and I hope by some miracle Petty can be the backup next year and Geno is a goner (I know it's HIGHLY unlikely but hey, dreams, right? ). With the projected play of the defense (it looks to be a really exciting and talented group) who knows? we might be surprised next year. Bottom line, I wasn't looking for regression in the QB spot next season. With the pieces we added I'll take what Fitz gave us last year again.
