I don't agree with this. I don't think people wanted to come here last time because of the situation moreso than the owner. The team had aging, expensive vets to figure out, was up against the cap and had a HC that was being forced onto them in Rex. (i guess you can blame Johnson for that one) I think you fire Rex and Idzik in the offseason and this is a MUCH more attractive job than in 2012. Plenty of cap room. A high draft pick, presumably, and lots of young players that may or may not be good but not a whole lot of decisions to be made regarding vets. I think Idzik could have done a good job digging his own grave by being so cheap and bridging the gap nicely for his replacement.
The bolded part seems totally accurate to me. Why would you? Your owner is basically saying he gets to choose who reports to you, not you, yet you will be judged around the league by the net result.
I mostly agree with this, without making a prediction for next year's fan attendance. I mean let's not go crazy here. But the rest is all fair. Woody seems to think fan attendance is a given regardless of effort to put a good team together. It isn't.
If you want to draw top talent to the GM position, Johnson has to indicate that he will let that man run the team and not make key football decisions for the GM. It's rather straightforward, really. Be like the guy who owns the Ravens. It says here Woody's ego will not let him do that.
It's good to see the consensus on here. People realize that we need: 1.) New GM/Head of Football Operations. 2.) New Head Coach 3.) New Scouting Dept. Now the hard part. Woody Johnson has to be ok with relinquishing control and allowing all football decisions to be made by this new leadership team. Will Woody's ego allow him to hand over the reigns completely?
When you know the guy isn't up to the job why stick around and let him fuck things up further. Do we really have to sit through 2 more seasons of shit before he deserves to get fired strictly because "you don't fire GMs after 2 seasons?" sounds like a terrible plan to me
If you want change all around,, let the stadium become empty, No money for parking and OH yeah the Beer sales drop you get the picture.
This.... the Jets have to be the only team who fired a GM and kept him on staff for the following 8 years following his firing.
Doubt it. If he hasn't then why would he now? Maybe a few more losing seasons will allow Woody to think things differently. I thought when he made the team acquire Tebow, he learned the error of his ways.
I disagree. First of all there is no such magic rule, no real rule at all if you think about it. He's had two full off seasons. Not only has he done nothing to fix the gaping hole the team had at Qb. He has made new holes and then failed to fix them at wideout and the secondary, and meanwhile the OL has begun to deteriorate. The mantra that you develop through the draft is all well and good, but it requires making good draft picks. Richardson is a great player, but the DL was already heavily invested in. I also think Amaro might turn out to be a good player. But so far that's it, and Idzik's lower round picks so far have yielded nothing. His only good FA or trade moves have been Ivory and Decker. Both good moves, imo, but not enough to overcome errors made elsewhere. We see this already. Idzik had no track record of success in the kind of job he has now before he came to the Jets. There's also no reason to think what we have seen so far will miraculously improve any time soon. Cut your losses. Find someone else.
But that's exactly what Idzik is doing with the garbage he drafted.... he cut guys who obviously aren't NFL caliber players.
i want a new QB and a Offensive head coach to teach this qb.. if rex cant get the d to play at a high level then what good is he.. anybody could coach the d
That's exactly my point, it's scary. Woody really screwed this up when he hired Idzik. My guess is the only reason we even got Idzik was because he just wanted a GM job so bad that he was ok with not picking his own coach. Let's just use Bill Polian as an example.... if he decided he wanted to throw his hat in the ring one more time is there anyway he'd come here knowing that the last guy was fired without even being able to pick his own coach and when said coach failed not only was the coach fired but also the GM? That's why we are doomed. I don't know if Idzik is cut out for the job but Woody can't fire him because the repercussions of doing so will set a ball in motion that might take us 5-7 years to come out of. He has to give Idzik at least another 2-3 years with his own guy.
I understand your point, but Woody cannot fix the mistake he made at the time. Leaving a GM in place who has shown nothing in the way of success also solves nothing going forward.
I think he has to be careful, this is a time he needs real football people around him. Sadly he has none so either way it's a gamble on his end and if he chooses wrongly the fallout could be unfathomable.
Because sadly it sets a bad precedence around the league that you have an owner that has no patience if you fire a GM after 2 seasons. The rest of the league FO personnel watch other teams moves. Head coach candidates take into account how long a GM's been there or how quick of a hook a head coach gets(Which is why Cleveland was struggling to get head coach candidate until late in the process since they fired Chud after 1 year) and the money and amount of input/freedom they get on roster moves. Nobody wants to join an organization that has a quick hook, even if Rex and Mr. T both got very good time here as Jets which is what would happen if Idzik is fired. Its why IF Coughlin were to go, so many guys would be up for that Giants gig...because of stability. Chip Kelly chose Philly over Cleveland because Reid was given so many chances and time to make it happen by their ownership. There'd be more time for Kelly to get his players and philosophy in there. He chose right because Cleveland threw Lombardi and Banner out the door in a snap of a finger along with their head coach, Chud.
I'm usually not on board giving a GM less than three years. Idzik will probably bring in his own HC, and will spend some of the cap savings to get some good players this offseason. This team will have a completely different look next season than it does now, I can guarantee that. Having said that, if Woody is going to fire Idzik and bring in someone else, he has to have total control of football operations. Cant hire a guy on the condition that he has to retain Rex. If you want a new GM, let him bring in his own guy, and mold the team in his vision. Let him hire his own staff and scouting division.
