I will agree with this 100%. I look at our defense and see how Rex has adjusted. Playing Coples out wide to knock the receiver off his path. Switching Allen to CB. Making moves to try to cover the talent deficiencies. Then I look at the offense. Where's the change? Why are we not trying things like splitting Johnson, Powell, etc. out wide. Go to 5 wideouts and run a QB draw. Sprint Geno out and give him a run/pass option. Run a few more reverses. DO SOMETHING besides just run the same old plays with different people hoping for a different result. We have a deficient offensive line and below average receivers (although I think Decker & Amaro will make a good nucleus). Take away that stupid fumbled punt and the Denver game might have been differnet.
I personally did not like the Milliner pick that much because of the injury history, but it wasn't a bad pick at the time. Yeah he had multiple surgeries in college, but he didn't miss time because of them, and they were mostly shoulder related and cleared by Jets' and other team's doctors. He hasn't had any shoulders related problems in the NFL. You can make the argument that those surgeries showed a general predisposition to injuries, but I am sure over the history of NFL, there were plenty of players who had a bunch of injuries in college, and then went on to have a great NFL career, so it's not like Milliner's surgeries guaranteed that he was going to fail. The upside on him was tremendous, with an extremely rare combination of athleticism, size and technique, and he has shown flashes of that when healthy. Considering they had a coach whose entire defense depends on the corners' ability to cover, and they just lost Revis, it was a reasonable pick. As I mentioned in another thread, Belichick picked a DE in the first round this year who had 2 major knee surgeries in college, is he also an idiot? Why do you think that if we traded up to 3rd round, we would automatically get a quality WR? Are 3rd round draft picks always successful or something? Idzik's approach is to keep as many picks as possible to statistically increase chances of hitting needles in haystacks. But that doesn't mean you'll hit them every single time. It's still a crapshoot. As far as paying another FA WR besides Decker, I already said, why lock all that money into a single position when you don't even know what you have with your QB?
I have been a big supporter of Rex. That said, I have to agree with those who argue that Rex simply does not put the right mechanisms in place to develop talent. He took mangini and tannenbaums team to two straight title games. He's taken his team nowhere the last three years. Granted last year he got 8-8 out of a 5-11 team but still no players developed under his watch, ghoston, Sanchez, Kyle Wilson, Ducasse etc., On top of that his in game management is horrible and he seemingly fails to adapt his defense to his team thus blitz every 3rd down without fail. At this point, and I could change, I think it's time for him to go. As for Idzik, so far he looks like a buffoon and if we tank this year I have no problem of getting him out along with Rex and starting fresh. Can't go 8-8 last year and then regress this year as draft picks fail and free agent money remains in the coffers. It's also an antiquated notion that it takes years to rebuild. Every year a team goes from 4-12 to in the playoffs.
Wilk, Richardson, Revis, Harrison, Allen, Kerley, Powell. Nobody developed under him? Also that whole blitz every 3rd down, do people watch the games and selectively forget when we don't blitz? Last game everyone focused that we blitzed on the final 3rd down where Welker caught the ball. The previous 3rd down, we only rushed 3 and the RB caught the pass and got a 1st down. Does leaving 8 guys back and giving up a first down just disappear in everyones memory?
