2 years... Alex Mack, pro bowl center in his first draft Joe Haden, pro bowl CB in his second draft T.J. Ward pro bowl S in his second draft not too shabby
out of 16 picks for a team drafting high desperately in need of talent. of those 18 picks only those 3 PBers are starters today. Incredible drafts.
That usually happens in the NFL junc. You get your best players at the top of the draft and the lower round players are hit or miss. I don't know if you pay attention enough. Hitting with multiple pro bowls on your first rounders is drafting fine. Not incredible but I or no one said it was.... "not too shabby" does NOT equate to "incredible" (unless you are grasping to a stupid argument) A better argument from you would be questioning how much influence Mangini as the HC really had in the draft process both in NY and CLE. That's one that makes sense to ask. Sometimes HCs don't have much of any influence and just coach with the hands they are dealt. You might have a solid point if you tried that route and wouldn't have to put words in people's mouths...
I am not going to laugh too hard about this. Above all other considerations Tanny is probably a smart guy who might have learned from his mistakes on the Jets. I tend to value the benefit of a change of scenery as well. He just might work out in Miami, and I say that despite being happy to see him go two years ago. But he sure did have some issues here. Just for the record, those near the top of the list include: Getting rid of Pete Kendall with no Plan B. Bender and Clarke. Heh. This basically killed a season for no good reason I could ever see. Jay Fiedler. Really? Backing up an injury prone Chadwick with a guy who was even more injury prone??? Not to mention who had a great penchant for hanging out receivers. Him going down the same game as Pennington was in short a mixed bag. Sure it meant the Jets had to play their third stringer, but they also probably avoided putting a couple of wideouts on IR or even career ending injuries. that move may not have had quite the awful impact of some of these others, but I always thought it was very hard to understand. Poor Draft picks between Revis and Wilkerson. Topping the cake was trading up to get the woeful Sanchez, but it was hardly limited to that disaster. Tebow Trade. Hard to know how much this was Tanny's deal, but he sure didn't stop it. Revis Contract Negotiations. I know this item is controversial for this list with many other Jet fans, but I never bought hte notion that all the problems here were coming from Revis's agents. It takes two to tango, and how the Jets let relations with their best player since Joe Namath deteriorate so badly was a major failure of the Tanny regime. Top Prize goes to The Sanchez Contract Extension. Says it all. Still, Tanny just might have learned from those mistakes.
3 of 18 is not a good %. compare that w/ Tannebaum in '06 and '07. 6 & 2007, 14 picks: 5 all pros(better than PB) plus contributors like Brad Smith, Eric Smith, Drew Coleman, Chansi Stuckey(which helped us get Braylon) Those are drafts, 2007 we got 2 all pros in 4 picks. that's better than 1 AP/3PB in 18 picks
The Kendall thing was a messy situation, handled poorly but we weren't winning w/ or w/o him. do we forget Kellen Clemens was our primary starter? Jay Fiedler was 2005, Tannenbaum wasn't GM until 2006. the trade for Sanchez was a steal whether you think he was good or sucked. we gave up very little to move into top part of draft. can't blame him for Revis, Tebow was bad. contract extension wasn't bad either, did not hurt us at all. The problem was not surrounding that QB w/ weapons. that was his biggest mistake.
Chances are that Rex will get the Atlanta job. But if he isn't hired by a team this year I could see Tanny firing Philbin and hiring Rex in Miami for 2016.
Philbin's on his last year anyways unless they make the playoffs. The Fins have spent a lot of money and the team has fizzled down the stretch two years straight. Personally I think Philbin has done a good job.
Similar situation to the Jets in 2009. The Fins haven't been able to get over the top despite significant spending on free agents the last few years. The difference is the Jets added a new head coach to the equation and kept the flashy GM. The Fins are adding the flashy FO guy and keeping the coach. It's probably going to be a clusterf*ck for them. It's not like they can spend more money than they've been spending to get over the top. I expect Tanny to be the GM/Exec VP of Football Operations next year and there to be a new coach in town to try to make the move.
