Absurd. That's what a QUALITY GM does: he builds through the draft AND he augments the draft with quality, cap-friendly free agents. And Idzik had the opportunity to do just that: if the Jets had some credible corners (instead of relying on a draft choice and a guy who had all of 4 good games in his NFL history), another receiver, and a credible veteran OG (or maybe just two of those needs) the season would have likely been far different. And we're talking nothing close to the $20 mil in cap room collecting interest. Instead, he left Ryan out to dry...
About the corners, don't you think its possible it went down something like this? "Okay, Rex, Mr. Defensive Genius on a one year audition, we've just spent consecutive first round draft picks on the secondary. We have a bunch of guys on the roster you've already coached for one to five years. We're keeping our powder dry for next season when we have to pay some guys and have a decent shot to be competitive. This season we are not investing more resources in the secondary, period. Find a way to make it work. Shouldn't be hard for a defensive genius."
It's certainly possible. but clearly not advisable. A GM should be continuously adding quality to the roster. To me, the OL is hardly quality, and it's the foundation of an offense. The WRs? Meh. Even with oft-injured Harvin, it's not a murders row by any standards. I'd like to see the Jets pursue the following, in order: I'd like to see the Jets REALLY shore up the OL. Add a dynamic, young OLB. Add a credible deep threat at WR and, of course, ensure that there are NFL-quality CBs.
No doubt. Not to mention find an NFL caliber QB. My point was only that knowing you have all those holes to fill and are probably a couple of years away from competing at least, is it smart to invest even heavier in the one area you've just spent a bunch of bullets on?
I don't think we're "a couple of years away from competing..." I think, with a quality offseason, we can be right in the mix. But I also think that a quality offseason means upgrading the OL first and foremost. And I feel we have an NFL caliber QB already. Geno is no worse than many starters. Faint praise, I know. But I'd like to see him with an NFL caliber OL before I damn him to hell.
I know I'm in the minority...and you can't possibly like everything I say ;-) I just think that Geno has had flashes. But he's made a ton of mistakes. That said, the throws he made on Sunday and at other times, sporadically though they have been, were throws not every QB can make. He fit shit into tight windows, lofted a nice long ball...all because the OL actually made and protected the pocket. And you know what they say, "the biggest jump in improvement is after the second year..." Oh wait, they said that about Sanchez too.
Geno's mechanics are too inconsistent for me to ever trust him as my starter. That's on top of his lack of situational football awareness.
Geno for two straight years has looked good over the last quarter of the season. After having league low stats before that. So you can't commit yourself to him because of the inconsistency. But he deserved to start over Vick. And should be on the team next season. I would sign a good vet Qb. And not draft Mariota unless he falls to 6. If Geno does end up being a good starter than Idzik's supposedly biggest mistake translates into a great selection.
amazing such an incomptent GM had us one good offseason from being right in the mix. you'd think he drove the franchise into the ground like Tannenbaum did.
I'm sure you'll give all of the blame for player personnel decisions you didn't like to one guy because it's easier and more one dimensional. Even though Rex and the front office etc were a big part of that. But none of the credit if things work out.
I place blame for personnel decisions I don't like on the guy who was hired to make personnel decisions and whose position description makes him accountable for them.
All the areas you've complained about: the secondary, wide receivers, the O-line. Even quarterback. Are areas that are still under construction. And could very well be improved.
Or they could suck again as they did for two years under his watch. I know I'm an easy target, but I didn't fire Idzik. Go rent a fucking billboard!!
Tanny drove the franchise into the ground at 6-10? Tanny would have been incapable of cutting players with bloated contracts to free up space? Only Idzigenius could do that?
