I might've missed it in my scrolling through the thread, but the Jets will be attending OSU's 2nd pro day.
I honestly want to see the Jets take Fields for the sole purpose of sending 3/4 of TGG into a meltdown. The hype for Wilson is just insane at the moment.
Imagine if Justin Fields didn’t have all those footwork and mechanical issues with his throwing motion. Maybe he should switch to WR in the NFL since all he does is run fast. https://www.pff.com/news/draft-2021...r-lawrence-justin-fields-trey-lance-mac-jones
He throws to all levels & can absolutely force the issue. But deep passing is not the strength of his game at the next level. There are alot of colllege QBs that can complete the kind of deep balls he did. And if we’re being fair he showed some inconsistencies w his velocity/placement on deep throws/outside the numbers incl on completed passes as well as at his pro day. Hes best suited for a timing based Walsh WCO. Does that scheme include some shots down field?Yes. Can he throw it deep?Sure. But not well enough to build a consistently deep 3rd level passing attack around him. That wouldnt be utilizing him correctly & would be doing him a disservice.
Yeah I see lots of disagreement on his deep ball. Some say it’s a strength others say it’s a weakness. He’s certainly got the arm strength to sling it deep but who knows.
I suspect the inconsistencies may actually be a deep accuracy issue rather than arm strength. His tape has quite a few completed throws outside the numbers(esp to the left),down the seam & on Long range 50/50 balls that float alot more than youd like to see. Then at his pro day he went out of his way to try to throw those routes w more velocity.Well Those were his worst misses of entire workout. When he went back to taking something off those throws the placement was much better & looked similar to throws he made on tape. That may sound like an easy adjustment, but this is literally the exact same issue Sam had.
Again nobody would be angry, maybe sceptic. It's a false narative created by Fields supporter that believe we will only be satisfied with Zach Wilson. I actually believe the meltdown would be more intense from Fields supporter if we go with Zach.
It's 100% a strength. His receivers were not creating much separation and he still managed to have amazing completion % from 40+ yards passes.
Spot on. Some of the Fields supporters have already been apoplectic because of all the love and support for Wilson. Their bitterness and anger have been palpable.
and Fields is more athletic than Wilson, but I don't know that I agree that he is more talented. If athleticism is a type of "talent" then I agree that Fields is ahead of Wilson in that type of talent, but I think Wilson is ahead of Fields in arm talent and instincst/foorball IQ, and that's talent imo, and not skill. Knowing how to play the position of QB, reading Ds, and making good, quick decisions is a skill. Making accurate throws into tight windows is talent. Anticipating throws I think is a combination of talent and skill. If it were just a skill, any/every QB could learn it, but many cannot. I liked the video, but part of what makes Wilson special imo is his arm talent and his innate understanding, instincts, football IQ, or whatever you want to call it. I think he's more skilled than Fields and more talented in the most important ways. It's what makes him such a great playmaker. I think those that say that Fields is a playmaker and Wilson isn't or is somehow inferior to Fields in that regard are wrong. When things go wrong with Fields, he usually runs or fairly often takes a sack. Wilson finds ways to make plays. He throws shovel passes, no look passes, throws from all arm angles. He looks to get the ball into the hands of his skill position players. That's playmaking.
Agreed. I think it's ridiculous to say that throwing deep isn't a strength of Wilson. IMO his arm is stronger than Fields. He flicks his wrist and the ball is out and travels 40-50 yards in the air. Their Pro Days showed the difference in arm strength. OSU just called more deep passes, than BYU. IMO BYU ran a more balanced offense, but Wilson does look to push the ball downfield.
Why would you really want to see that meltdown? Its all pathetic at this point everytime it happens...It just makes you a fan of the circus that comes with being a Jets supporter. And we all know either Fields or Wilson, plenty of people are gonna bitch and moan here. A meltdown is going to happen somewhere on the boards. Not saying it is you...But I dont understand the constant bitterness about these 1st round QB's in this class. Aside from Mac Jones who I want to stay far the hell away from with his DUI's, every other QB could make it big.
DWIs? Plural? I think there was only one and it was 3 1/2 years ago when he was nineteen years old. It would be hard for me to look at that as something that would disqualify him.
