I actually felt he was terrible on his pro day. He missed a lot of throws, easy throws in fact. I think analysts just covered for him so they don’t seem wrong in their analysis. I saw his pro day and felt that Allen way waaaay better. Watch it again and you will see the ball hit the turf too many times for my liking.
Been happening since the beginning. Star recruits always got cars and bundles of cash in their locker to come. It’s like an unwritten conduct of business
Yep, but this is the first time I've heard of where another coach supposedly has evidence of two top coaches doing it. If I was a HC at another college, especially in the SEC, I'd be screaming at the NCAA and threatening to sue if they didn't do a thorough investigation. If the allegations are proven true, both Smart and Saban should be fired and both schools given the same death penalty that SMU got.
I'd trade him before FA starts and then sign a vet during FA. Yes it tells everyone that we will probably take a QB but not which one and at what spot in the draft.
Wow this former Jets scout thinks Wilson is an epic bust https://www.nfldraftdiamonds.com/2021/03/zach-wilson-4/
Back in the day with Parcels and co... he thinks Lawrence is bust worth too but not as high as Wilson. Maybe someone pissed on his Cheerios LOL https://www.nfldraftdiamonds.com/2021/03/nfl-scout/
Well there's certainly no middle ground there! The thing is, he might well be right. I can see what he's saying, although I think he is being pretty harsh on his assessment of his throws. That said, I also don't think he's completely off base - I can see why he might have this opinion. Interesting take for sure.
He seems very agressive on his take though. I have watched the same throws as him and I never got the impression he had accuracy issues. He seems to be more bothered by his Jet Blue affiliation through his family than his actual play. His arm might be "not great" but he has more than enough zip and his fast release make him very special. He also said surefire bust... I would have loved to see how he rated previous quarterback in their draft year to see the full picture of his knowledge.
From what I've seen he seems more accurate that anyone else except Mac Jones in this class, but again, I'm not an expert. I do see where he has thrown receivers into big hits and he has to fix that. But his mechanics are very clean and I believe he can fix that. Also he's very accurate on deep balls. I think if he can sit and learn like Mahomes did and acclimate to the much faster speed and size of the NFL he will be a FQB. But this guy has been an NFL scout under Parcells and that carries a lot of weight. I don't think Wilson will be a bust, but he also won't drop to the 3rd round. If he's right, Wilson might cost some GM their job, but I don't think he's right.
https://www.si.com/nfl/jets/news/ny-jets-daniel-kelly-nfl-scout-cancer-against-the-odds He was a gopher.
I read his personal story. He was more of a armchair amateur scout that had the chance to work with the Jets as a scout than actually a seasoned pro career scout with a vast experience. Again anybody can bust and that's why it is never easy to select the right player but his take on Wilson seem very harsh and personal (for some reason). Like he is putting BYU career stats as one of his drawback but that is arguably the worst reason you can give.
I can see some of his points for sure, I've seen others also mention how Wilson doesn't have a great play action fake. One thing that makes me question the fairness of the evaluation is knocking Wilson for total yards produced during his college career. Using a counting stat against a guy who played 9 games his freshman year, 9 games his sophomore year and 12 games his final year due to COVID either indicates this scout isn't too bright or has an agenda. Now, if he had cited injuries as a concern I would have to agree. But the way it's stated in his report it just makes him come off as dumb, especially since Wilson's Y/A his most recent year was astronomically high. Also him saying Wilson "never" throws guys open is just flat out false. I've seen him do it many times watching tape and I've seen QB coaches say he excels at throwing guys open. To speak in such absolutes is usually indicative of a dumb person who tries to oversimplify things for the sake of convincing others.
Yeah, I agree with that. And with the #2 pick, you don't even have to play any games. You basically have the #1 overall pick in a Trevor Lawrence-less draft. Teams can call you and offer deals for the #2 pick, but it doesn't matter. If you want a QB, you draft a QB. If you want to trade down, you can trade down. Darnold is the element that the Jets have to continue to play coy with. Once he is moved, they can start to show their true hand.
I’m more worried about the arm strength now... that’s the second NFL scout to say he doesn’t have an NFL arm. That’s a bit worrisome. I did notice when watching every throw/run he made this year that on a “Hail Mary” pass he didn’t reach the end zone from around the 50 yard line...
I wouldn't call him "dumb", I think he does have some evidence - though it's based on his perceptions and opinions - to support what he's saying. But I do agree with you that I have seen Wilson throw receivers open and he is way more accurate than this guy says. That said, he does tend to throw a bit late sometimes - although so do all the other QBs so I think it's something that he can adjust for. I also agree with him - and others - who have said his ball fake needs work - it does, it will fool no one in the NFL the way it is. IDK if it's "personal", but it seems like he's trying to present a counterbalance to the all the hype - the same way some here seem to be trying to do. In the end, it gets back to what Douglas thinks, and I'll trust his judgement.
I agree on all points. This argues that if the Jets do trade Darnold they will do so at something approaching the last possible moment to make the trade. That is several days before the draft to give the acquiring team time to do a physical on Darnold and maybe talk to him about a relatively cheap extension. Darnold will never have less leverage in contract talks than when he is approached by a second team about an extension, indicating that the Jets are not likely to offer him one and that he likely will not have a starting job in 2021 unless the acquiring team makes the acquisition. Assuming the Jets do not trade Darnold in that window shortly before the draft the odds are pretty strong they are going to roll with him into camp and then the 2021 season. If we get lucky and a real value pick at QB shows up at one of our picks then Darnold could still go in a post-draft trade, however he would also be good as camp competition and to keep the rookie on the bench for a year. Darnold's value goes up for the Jets once they have a rookie they want to use him to protect.
