Actually he does suck and he is great. I rooted for more great and less suck each game. Some games I got more great and some games I got more suck.

Ok then when would you decide to give Ratliff a shot. If all the NFL teams used your logic Tom Brady would be a nobody. Ratliff earned a chance lets give it to him. What did Clemens do that was so exciting in pre-season 2007 to earn the starting job in 2007. Big deal he beat out a weak armed QB.

brett favre was, and still is my favorite QB of all time.

    ....only in a packers uniform.

he did nothing for this team.
    22 TDs, 22 ints.

Most of those picks came on his inability to be adept in the playbook.
To me, in my opinion, he didnt try hard enough.

He gave up in several games, and ultimately when the "leader" of your team gives up, the coaches give up (at least ours did), and the team gives up.

I hope he chooses retirement, and allows to fill the void he leaves in cap room with talent and players that want to win when it counts.

I could have added one other thing that is just as true. We are NOT a team that is rebuilding. We didn't just spend 140 million on FAs so we can put together a 3 or 5 year plan to get us where we want to be. We are tring to win now and we need to go with whomever is the best option at QB now, not what project may become a good QB two years down the road.

Again, when the 08 season started I thought the Jets had less holes than I think they do now. The problem with your post is there's a cost to drafting a Qb this season, particularly with a high pick. How can that cost be justified if they might possibly have an adequate starter in the personages of either Ratliff, Clemens or both?

It was not that long ago a high second round pick was spent getting Clemens. Yet here he is coming up on his contract year, and there's a huge debate about whether he's a good Qb or not. Actually putting aside the debate, the truth is we really don't know what we have in Clemens. And the same with Ratliff.

Now if we all thought they both sucked, and had no future, the way to go would be quite clear - hopefully bring back Favre and spend a high pick on a Qb in this year's draft, develop that pick this coming season, watching Brett Favre, and hopefully he's ready in 10.

But adding another Qb to this team, using a draft pick from a draft that (of course) occurs before camp opens, before pre-season, before any games against real opponents? So then they have Clemens, Ratliff, Ainge and the new guy?

I am aware that the converse is also a realistic prospect - Ratliff does not have it, Clemens shows no improvement, and the Jets find themselves in 09 with lousy Qb play. Despite that being a real prospect, I am reasonably sure they will NOT go high pick for Qb in the draft this year unless of course somebody falls into their laps. I don't even see how the Jets could trade away Clemens. How would you establish his value? Would it make sense to trade Ratliff? No.

No, the one thing I think is least likely is that the Jets will look at Clemens, Ratliff and Ainge and think the thing to do is add a rookie from the upcoming draft.

I was with you until there. They have to sign a veteran IMO, someone they know can at least be "above average." You can call it PSL fear if you want, but it is what it is, and it's nto just the Jets that do things that way.

He did? Because of those two passes?

Ratliff "earned his chance" like I became a multimillionaire the day I took my first job. If you figure I just keep doing what I did that day and get better as I get experienced, then many million dollars of salary over my life was "in the bag"). And I was on track to being President in kindergarten.

I still insist that if you REALLY believe Ratliff is gonna be the QB of the future, then you probably want Favre back, not see him retire. Let's just cut to the chase: Jets are not gonna put all their eggs in that basket if Favre quits. They are gonna draft, trade for, or sign as FA another QB. Period. I will bet my last dollar on the Jets not gonna into 2009 with Clemens, Ratliff, and Ainge. If they do that, whatever QB they get, however they get it, will be "in the way" of Ratliff's progress for a LOT longer than Favre would be.

I'm not arguing the validity of drafting a QB. I'm just saying what the results would be if they do and if they don't. Also, I don't think you draft your franchise QB in the second round. I never thought of Clemens as that guy and I think there is a distinct chance they just let him walk when his contract is up. They could have taken Leinart or Cutler in '06 and took Ferguson instead. By doing that they set back their QB position for years. Even then they knew Pennington was an injury risk.

You sound more like a Brett Favre fan than a Jet fan.

i agree. i say let favre retire, allow an open competition between our 3 qb's, and if it doesnt work out. we better make moves in getting Colt McCoy, in 2010 draft. .

Brett Ratliff's preseason stats: Attemtped 43, Completed 30, 448 yards, 3 touchdowns, 0 interceptions, 115 QB Rating. How the hell does that not at least deserve a look? I don't care if it was against second and third stringers, those are great stats. Even Mangini commented on how well he played. Clemens did not look nearly as good, on the field or on paper. He's 6'4", 235 pounds, and can move around a bit. My God, what do you people want? I'm not annointing him as the next great quarterback, but right now I'd rather watch him than some washed-up 40 year-old former great who has no desire to play for the Jets.

Yeah yeah yeah, he deserves a shot. Alright already.

But if Ratliff is the Jets' best shot at Qb as of right now, they are in trouble.

There is much more to the job then making throws. Rookies get in trouble reading and reacting to defenses. In time (a long time) he may be good. He didn't come out of a pro type conference and it will take him a few years to get ready. You may not like that 40 year old but he is the only thing you have and you may not even have him.

I have said it before, this team is not rebuilding and they WILL NOT have a rookie QB under center next year. At least they won't if there is anything else on the planet they can drag in.

We should trade his rights to Detroit for a couple transmissions.

Well, seeing as they already have three QBs on their roster who won't be rookies next year you're probably right about that.

Another excellent point and worth re-thinking my position on Favre.

I'm just so damned frustrated with this team right now. Honestly, I've been a fan for 40+ years and I can't remember a time when I was more frustrated... maybe Kotite or the Ryan years, I don't know.

But they were losers.. flat out losers, so you're expectations weren't high anyway. This team and this year... what a freakin' ass-kicker of a season, I'll tell you.

I've had my season tickets for a very long time and love to go to the games with my family, but this is one very trying season. Forget about the PSLs, I'm heading for the Upper Deck and see what I get.

    Woody can whistle fucking dixie.

not that i disagree, but the pointing the finger thing will be reserved for thos who watch pennington get pulverized next year when he can't hide behind the trickery with an easy schedule anymore.

I have supported Favre way longer than most Jets fans and way longer than I should have.

Did you watch Favre? He never seemed to give a damn, especially the final 5 games. Its annoying to me. The playoffs were in reach, a division title was in reach, now the team is DESTROYED and Favre is going to wait a month to say he is going to retire. He feels NO NEED to make up for his EPIC FAILURE at the end of the season. I would. If I was him I would feel terrible. Not only that, I would say at my press conference after the game how sorry I was to the fans and how I will be back in 2009 to fix it. Favre only cares about himself. Its sad.
