Favre is one of the best Qbs who ever played, unfortunately for us he was one of the worst(the worst) Qbs that played this year. As bad as the coaching was this year if Favre even had a decent season we win the division.
Agreed the coaching was bad but Favre deserves his share of the blame. He was awful down the stretch for this team when the sorely needed him to lead.
Ok ill buy that to a certain extent but... did you watch favre play this year, sometimes it looked like he didnt care, the kc game which i was at, he would just throw it up and when the other team got it he just shrugged and went to the sideline, EM didnt just say ok brett, throw it up.
I never said he wasn't bad but you guys are underrating just how bad of an effect horrible coaching can do to a QB. He always would throw balls up for grabs even in Green Bay, however usually his bad streak would also come with wins and great QB play, because of our lack of any coaching whatsoever we never did use Brett in the way that would also bring out the best in him
Wasn't that the case today? Or last week? That argument falls flat on its face when you consider that, without having to speculate, in a game that both teams "had to win" Pennington came into the Jets building and completely and thoroughly outplayed Favre (again) and won the big game. Pennington is so far the better QB right now it isn't even close. The denial of the anti-Pennington crowd is impossible to fathom. Why can't people just admit they were completely wrong about Pennington, wrong about wanting Favre here instead of him, and wrong to think that the Jets blew it? This year provided the ultimate laboratory for all these comparisons and statements and the real life experiment showed that Pennington is a top tier NFL QB and that Favre is washed up. There is no argument to be made that the Favre move was smart or correct. And those who knocked Pennington all these years should just admit they were wrong. I just sat in the Meadowlands and watched Pennington QB an inferior team to a win the division title by making smarter decisions and better throws (long and short) than Favre. Coaching did not lose this game today. Three interceptions by Favre did. There is no statistic that has more influence on winning and losing than turnover ration and when the Jets needed Favre most, he was horrible and when Miami needed Pennington most he got the job done (even in the wind today and bitter cold last week in KC when his defense did not show up). I don't care what happens next week. I'd rather be playing and with Pennington, the Jets would be playing. Now what?????? Plus, if the Jets wanted a change at QB, they should have traded Pennington to the NFC and gone with Clemens or Ratliff. Instead, as I said when the Favre trade was made, the JEts wasted a year with on over the hill QB. There was a reason the Packers didn't want him back. That should have been the first clue for the Jets.
No argument Favre looks washed up and Pennington looked fine, in command and healthy. Watching the game what about the Jets makes you think they have superior talent? I thought just the opposite. I felt like they were getting more consistent pressure, protecting better running the ball better and getting guys open with more seperation. I keep hearing that we have more talent, I didn't see it and I'm happy to hear who we have that compares to Joey Porter, Ricky Williams, Ronnie Brown or even Ted Ginn at this point? Over all they looked much more powerful in the running game and had much better over all team speed on both sides of the ball.
It wouldn't be as much of Favre's fault if EM decided to run the ball more and not put the game on Favre all the damn time.
Did Pennington play better than I thought he would, sure. Did he benefit from Lowry dropping an easy INT and benefiting from our LB dropping an INT that hit him directly in the chest and could have been a pick 6, sure. You guys can talk all you want about how they have less talent but I'd rather have their defense and their coach in a heartbeat. Our pass is horrible, absolutely horrible. Yes, Chad played well enough to win. Do I think this year would have gone any better with him at QB, I don't know, I don't really care. He's not here. He had his shot for many years and always came up short. I think they get destroyed against the Ravens like they did earlier this year. Having Pennington here wouldn't have won us the Super Bowl, we took a risk with Favre, it didn't work out. Big deal, I'm fine with it. Favre stunk it up today - thats reality, I wish him the best luck in retirement (thats where I see him going next). And I love how people ignore the fact that they run the Wildcat offense on so many plays. Would the Jets have ran that if Pennington was here? We even tried a play with Wildcat in this game and it showed how much better the Dolphins coaching is because we lost like 3 yards. The running game is overrated in my opinion. Washington is the man but Jones has disappeared too. That drop by Keller in the end zone at the end of hte half, right through his f'n arms. The run defense is nothing special either. IMO, this team wasn't good enough to win anything anyway, there are way too many weaknesses, so I can't be that disappointed to be honest. 9-7 after 4-12, whatever. I'll take it, it was a ride at least and we played meaningful games in December. Its not so much as "Favre defending" - I could give a crap what he does after hes no longer a Jet, I still stand by Pennington wasn't going to win us a Super Bowl (and he's not winning Miami one either), so I don't care he's gone. If we won that game, what happens? We're 10-6, who cares. A lot of you wanted us to lose anyway, so you should be happy.
And how many times do we have to throw on 3rd and 2 - not just throw but line up in shotgun. And a missed extra point? WTF. Blocked punt?! This team has a lot more problems than Favre.
You and I are in the exact same place, WB. I had no problem with getting rid of Pennington, because I didn't think there was any way that he would ever again be as healthy as he was in 2002, yet it's obvious that that is what has happened. I've argued that people have overvalued the talent on the Jets for a while, so I'm with you there too. And before people throw Pro Bowl choices at me as proof of talent, don't bother. Favre was a joke of a choice even at the time and Leon was picked because of special teams, which leaves one skill position choice on offense (Jones). On defense Jenkins was a worthy pick six weeks ago, but has been awful down the stretch, which leaves one guy (Revis), who is a cornerback (the easiest position for the offense to neutralize by just not throwing his way).
My feelings for Chad are well know but with that said he had a great season and I give him credit where it is due. The problem is we need a Qb who can get us to the Sb and Chad is not that. He will be finished next weekend unless the Phins can win a 9-6 in a field goal game. He will get pressure from and elite defense and it will all end next week. We need a Qb who can get us past the first rd. Unfortunately Farve is no longer that guy but it was worth the risk. I wanted to rebuild the whole team but Farve was still the better gamble at the beginning of the season. Until we get and develop a young Qb we will continue to be a losing mediocre franchise. At the end of the day we lost yet another year with the refusal to rebuild this mess from the bottom up.
That TD pass today was pretty fucking beutiful imo. He had to go. But Favre should have never came. Lose lose i guess.
It really looked like Shanahan looked at the tape and put together a blue print for dismanteling our team on both sides of the ball that every team has followed since. Every team has weaknesses but we have looked very bad down the stretch and have been pretty well exploited on both sides of the ball by some not very good teams. I don't think we have had a stretch in the last 5 games were we looked superior to the oppositon at any point in the game.
What is it about Penny that drives the haters insane? Is it the gay vibe he sometimes gives off? Are you jealous cuz he's good looking? Is it cuz you just can't admit Groh, Edwards and Mangini were suck ass coaches?
Chad had his chance here.....Last year the Jets were 4-12.....Clearly it wasn't working.....I, for one, stand by the moves the Jets made....They weren't going to win the Super Bowl with Chad.....They took a chance on Favre....Did it work, obviously not....but at least they're taking initiative to get to that next level instead of standing pat with things that don't work. Except Mangini of course
