I agree with you, but i think maturity is something that you can learn, a lot easier then it would be to learn the talents he possesses.

That being said, i would be ok in drafting any player the improves our team at any position. But there is something that is just more enamoring about drafting a young QB who becomes a franchise QB and is the face of the franchise for a decade (ala brady/manning types, one of which who was a number 1 pick and the other a late rounder). in a perfect world one of these two, or any QB in the draft, will be the jets starter for 10 years and lead the team to a ship or two, turning this team around.

Still though I think winston is undervalued.

and by undervalued I dont mean we should draft him over anyone else, I simply mean he should be more in the conversation then he seems to be on this board.

I think you're barking up the wrong tree if you believe JW will be that decade franchise player.

Your QB, franchise player, should be one of the smartest, maturest players on the team. I wouldn't even mention "Manning types" when it comes to Winston.

Winston's problem is that he makes poor life choices which will effect his QB play in the NFL. Young or not, I never heard of Andrew Luck / Peyton Manning, in College, making as many poor choices as JW. Some people never grow up, if JW doesn't grow up he will never succeed in the NFL.

Im not saying specifically that he will be a franchise QB, Im saying he and mariota have a similar chance to be and that most people seem to think otherwise, hense being undervalued. Like i said frankly I dont care who we draft or at what position as long as they help the team win, but it would be awesome if we drafted a QB who turned into a franchise player (JW,MM or otherwise)

I agree smarts are what counts...there's a reason that Manning was great and Luck is great and Mariota will be great whereas dumbasses like Leaf or Russell sucked and Winston will suck

winstons football IQ is very high. I think you are confusing smarts with maturity.

I'll go on record here as stating the Jets will be better off drafting Mariota than Winston if they had a choice between the 2.
When was the last time a Heisman trophy QB ever had any type of success in leading a team to the superbowl the NFL? Roger Staubach
is the only one that comes to mind. Not to say that Winston won't, but but odds are against it happening. It's the kiss of the death.

I didn't like the Geno pick either - even in the 2nd round!!

Id be happy with either, if I couldnt choose between either one at this point because I keep flip flopping, I like both... I think if mariota can with a championship with the team he has right now and winston fails to do so I think i might sway to mariota... IMO both guys dont have terribly great teams around them and if they win the majority of it will lie on their shoulders so winning it all would speak volumes of their abilities.

Guys I just don't think it's the right year to draft a QB. many other positions of need where we should look for help in round one. I'd be in favor of drafting an OT ,WR or CB. Best player available from those positions.

Jameis Winston does not currently look like a player I want on this team. Even just referring to on field stuff, I've had enough of quarterbacks throwing the ball to the other team this often. If he's throwing this many in college imagine him in the pros.

For every great moment Winston has on the field, he makes ten awful mistakes. He's thrown about two interceptions in almost every game, it's getting ridiculous.

Want nothing to do with Winston, Rashad Greene however is a nice receiver. His game reminds me of Reggie Wayne

I keep asking myself, out of the top 15 QB's in the league, do any of them act like this off the field? The answer is no and thus I don't want this idiot on my team. Maybe as a 3rd rounder...maybe.

I wasn't impressed by Cook, Winston or Mariota to be honest. This is my first time watching them but I don't think they are sure fire top 5 picks. I thinkWinston and mariota could struggle to adjust in the pros where defenders are so much faster.

I just would like to say a big I TOLD YOU SO to everyone who was saying that winston is dumb and will bomb etc... reading into the media hype that he is immature and yada yada... the dude is the youngest person in NFL history to put up over 4000 yards and going to the pro bowl and his team improved by 4 wins and mariota put up pedestrian numbers the HC got fired and they improved by 1 win.

not trying to say mariota sucks, im simply just saying what the title of this thread says... those "problems" are not actual problems and winston is a good QB. good thing some of you are not GMs...

Stereotypes and bad decisions play a role. Winston is going to be a star in this league no doubt about it. He's a natural born leader, and the guy just can make any throw in the book. He's sneaky mobile and will break tackles to get into the EZ.

It's been said already but Mariota is going to have a tougher road. To be honest, outside of 3 or 4 games - he wasn't all that impressive. I think a lot of people crowned him too quickly. Arrow doesn't look to be going up either for Mariota with 2 knee injuries, a shitty team and a bad front office. You kind of feel bad for him.

Mariota was one of the worst deep passers in the NFL last year but I think his accuracy [short / intermediate] and ability to throw on the run is top-notch.
