OP is right. There is a lot of work to be done on MM, that 1 read system is not even remotely close to the NFL. Winston is also a psycho, s we really need to see how he plays out. Really going to be a tough decision, would rather idzik not be around for this.
Based on a pure skill set, I think he has a higher NFL ceiling than Mariotta (who I admittedly havent seen much of), but if you cant stay out of trouble in Tal-a-freakin-Hassee, you're toast in NYC
Winston isn't a an elite QB prospect because his release just isn't nfl quality.. Mariota is a better version of Cam Newton!! We absolutely need this kid!!
I really like Jameis...he seems cool under pressure, the Jets need someone like that who is a cool customer. He'll always get in the face of his teammates when adversity hits...he's a VERY vocal kid. The things with his mechanics can be corrected I feel. He handles pressure pretty well and knows how to read defenses pretty good. I'd take a chance on him no doubt.
I included that to show how he has less similarities geno then mariota. (although I think MM is much better then geno)
good post. I was more so putting them in order of saverity not so much in chonological order. however I guess since it happened after the rape accusation it makes sense people would be hyper critical of him. I would still draft him, at this point, ahead of Mariota.
Idk what that means. Mariota is the better prospect. If you're point is that Mariota is Geno, you are sadly mistaken. Two very different prospects coming out, although I was high on Geno.
Winston plays in a pro style system. Geno/Mariota did/do not. Winston has came up big in big games. Geno/Mariota did/do not. Winston shows ability to block out adversity and rise to the occasion on the feild. geno does not, mariota has not really had to deal with any as of yet so jury is out Winston is a fiery vocal leader on offense. Geno/Mariota are not Winston goes through progressions often. Geno/Mariota heavily rely on first read. winston has leadership quality's, wins big games (wins every game actually, atleast at the time im writing this) comes from a pro-style system that should translate into the NFL easier and can handle the media. I think mariota is a great prospect and I would not be disappointed if he was a jet but i dont think he could survive the media and im also concerned that he could not lead the ducks to a ship (as of right now). so with that I think jameis is a better prospect, although everyone has there own opinion. the point of this thread was to show that he should not be written off because of whats reported off the field as on the field he the best QB in the country, and probably the best overall player. IMO
Based on very little game I've actually watched my immediate reaction to Mariotta is that he's got great mobility and seems calm and poised in the pocket... however I don't like him as a thrower. Not bad by any means, but he won't be a top NFL QB from a throwing standpoint.
This is why we can't have Rex as a coach if we ever got Winston. He would talk him up and let all his off the field things slide. Look at how Cleveland is handling Johnny Football right now. I think it's the right move because you have to show these guys that playing time and success are earned.
best post I've read on TGG in a while. I don't want this mental midget asshole anywhere near our already dumpster fire football team...if we're gonna strike out, lets strike out with a guy like MM that has the character and the smarts in addition to the tools on the field. Winston has neither a shred of intelligence or character
I watched Stanford - Oregon last week and lost count of how many times Mariota missed wide open receivers. It could be just bad fluke on his part, but if Jets spend a high draft pick on another QB that can't hit wide open receiver, I'm going to be on suicide watch. Winston's all off-field crap and the 16/9 TD-Int ratio is enough to turn off. If he can't avoid throwing picks in college, how can we expect him to do better in the NFL? Same goes for moving to NYC, as Stinky pointed out. I'm not high on either of these guys.
It was an off day for him accuracy wise. He usually does not miss the lay ups he missed against Stanford. What I like most about MM is that he doesn't force throws; he has no problems throwing it away to live to fight another down. That is a VERY rare trait in a young QB. Most QBs his age don't know when to give up on a play and tip their hat to the defense. It's surprising his CMP% is as high as it is considering how often he does that. I just wished that carefulness with the ball carried over to when he's moving around in the pocket and/or scrambling. He has a bad habit of carrying the ball low with one hand in traffic when buying time behind the LOS pretty much begging defensive linemen to strip the ball out from him. He needs to clean that up.
I'm one of the biggest Jameis haters on this site and it's all based on his character. JW doesn't lack intelligence, in fact his football IQ is pretty impressive with his physical ability. JW's problem is his immaturity, which is mutually exclusive from his intelligence. You can be intelligent and lack maturity to make good decisions. I have a family member that is a MD and is super intelligent , but lacks common sense. I said this before, if we are going to draft MM, we better have the players and support for him to succeed, which Rex has failed with Mark & Geno. I'd rather draft a Top OT like Peat, sign a Vet QB (hold the fort guy), draft a player like Garrett Grayson and look at a Top QB in 2016. The Jets aren't turning this around in the next 6 months with the draft and Free Agency, it will take a few years.
I agree completely. We can't afford to draft another QB with a top pick that doesnt work out. Id rather take Cooper or Peat whichever is available because both look like future stars to me. Jameis and MM could be but I just dont see it.
