We have a new "owner" since Ralph Wilson has stepped down and a completely new coaching staff to go along with this already talented roster we've had the past 2 years. I honestly believe we are just a QB away from being contenders in the AFC, all the other pieces are there. In fact I'm guarenteeing atleast 10 wins from the Bills IF we draft Tyler Wilson and pickup a proven #2 WR option.
Isn't EVERYONE a QB away from being a contender? LOL. Guaranteeing 10 wins with Tyler Wilson? You truly are a Buffalo Psycho (and can't even spell it right).
And we all know how on target your guarantees are, including the one still in your sig (I do give you credit for keeping it there, by the way).
No. I'm not saying Tyler Wilson is an elite QB who will come right into the NFL and play like Tom Brady, Montana, and RG3 into one. Take away the QB position and we are alot more talented then most teams. I think we can pickup some middle tier free agents to fill the LB positions. I actually signed up a BuffaloPhysco but my name was later changed by a mod.
HEY HEY HEY HEY!! That 2012 line is still together with a more "in with the times" defese coordinator. Watch out.
actually i did the 3 round mock here as GM of the bills and reviewing their roster it isn't half bad in spots. i purposely ignored the QB position during the mock because u just dont know with regard to free agency and stuff. they did have some injuries late but if those guys can come back and they re-sign levitre - and add 2-3 starters via the draft they can improve. who knows about QB. i think if any team should be ground/pound it should be them. take the ball out of fitz hands. trouble is their defense isn't quite up to snuff at this point.
I would expect a better mario Williams but he was never worth what Buf paid him and has never been a premiere pass rusher.
The guy had 10+ sacks and was a great run defender. After the fixed the torn ligament in his wrist he was a menace the rest of the year. Its not as if he played poorly by any means.
There wasn nothing great about mario and he's paid to get to the QB which he didn't do nearly enough last year.
Nice try, but he was NOT a good run defender. He did have those 10 sacks and I'll admit, he played a lot better after his injury overall - but he was/always has been average to poor in run defense, teams run right at him. It will be interesting to see what Pettine does with him. Does Buffalo switch to the 3/4 and play him as an OLB or stick with the 4/3 with him playing DE? I think they'll run a hybrid/a little bit of both, so they'll be times where he's lined up as an OLB this season. Expect teams to hit his side off-tackle or with sweeps if that's the case. He's a good player but I just don't think he's a great player and certainly not worth what Buffalo paid him. But - you guys have to get above the Cap floor somehow eh?
As far as Mario goes, I don't study his tape, but from all accounts I've heard, its actually the exact opposite of what you say. Mario is an excellent run defender and all around player. That's why many people felt that even if we never got top 10 sack production from him, his game is so good all around that he'll never be a complete bust. Again, I don't study every snap of every game, but the experts say quite the opposite. Also, I know that our run troubles have been right up the middle, as well as the edge opposite Mario. I'm not sure what Pettine has in store schematically, I'm sure its a hybrid, but I'd be willing to bet that whether Mario has his hand up or down, he'll be playing the same role: get after the QB and set the edge. I know people are saying we need inside linebackers, and we do, but part of me wonders if Pettine's first priority is to sure up the CB spot opposite Gilmore, ala the Jets' tandem. There's not a Revis or Cromartie out there, but I wonder if he wants to be able to be exotic and just blitz from everywhere like he did with Rex. We'll see. Hey one thing I wanted to ask... what are the chances DeVito gets re-signed? Our rotational end (Spencer Johnson) who plays the exact role DeVito did is also a free agent. I wonder if instead of re-signing Spencer, Pettine adds DeVito. Will the Jets let DeVito walk? I love his game.
dont expect too many exotic blitzes from pettine, hes the conservative guy that dialed back the blitzing in 11 and 12...
Mario is a well-rounded player who is decent against the pass AND the run. He is not worth the contract he got by any stretch of the imagination, but that was the market for him, basically. He is very good, though. There can be no doubt whatsoever that he was hampered by that wrist injury in the first half of the season. The Bills defense was also hampered by Dave Wannstedt's COMPLETE lack of imagination in running that defense. The Bills defense just about NEVER blitzed, disguised looks, or made the opposing offense think twice about what they were doing. In other words, they just did the same thing over and over again even when it was obvious that it was not working. It was painful to watch much of the time, especially early in the year. They rushed four guys every time, and the rest fell back into coverage, basically. This year, I expect a much better defense. Different looks, blitzes...less predictability...you know, what a defense is supposed to do. The Patriots wouldn't even NEED any Spygate maneuvers against last year's defense. You already knew what they were going to do. I still think that the Bills have a top ten d-line on paper. They just need a couple of linebackers now.
I find it pretty funny that you Jills fans are piling on Wanny now and using him as a reason why your team sucked.. Last offseason Jills fans had a huge Wanny love fest. You guys finally had a defensive coordinator so you were going to finally win.. right? I suppose that's why this thread was created though - "every offseason" I think Wanny sucks, but I'll say that maybe the reason he didn't blitz was because his LBs and secondary sucked. In order to blitz you got to have guys that can make up for it on the back end. Also, I thought you guys had the best D-line in the league going into last season... Why the need to blitz then? Aren't those guys good enough to get consistent pressure on their own?
Do you think your corners on the back end to cover well enough to constantly blitz? I know Leodis McKelvin and I feel like he's good?
Gilmore is a shut-down type and will be a stud, but right now we have no one across from him. The in-house candidates: 1.) Aaron Williams. Looked very good his rookie year and looked like trash last year, so no one really knows what to expect. 2.) Ron Brooks. Stepped in the last few games as our 4th round pick and played pretty well. Small sample size though. Who knows. The others have proven they are not capable of starting. Justin Rogers is an ok nickle/dime back, but not a starter. Could one of Williams or Brooks pull through? Absolutely. I just don't feel comfortable relying on that.
