The trend is all of the losses have been against the better teams, more or less. All of the losses came against teams with winning records, except for the Dolphins. In fact, the only team the Jets beat that currently has a winning record is the Colts.
The simplest answer is we aren't a good team and thus lose against better teams (pit, 49s, tex, pats...) while Miami isn't in the same caliber team in the group I mentioned they look to be better than the jet and showing improvement while the jets look to be going in the opposite direction with injuries and questions at all the key positions. In that context the losses aren't a surprise. I don't give wins and loss as much weight as the quality of play and the development of talent. In these two areas the jets come up woefully lacking. People like to point out recent playoff appearances as some proof its a good team, but if we take into the account how they got in and that most of the players aren't on the team anymore you can see it has little relevance. The biggest complaint against Rex is the lack of offense. I'm not saying this season but his whole body of work. Not only on the field he was in on the personnel decisions. He just not a great offensive mind and the defense while better seems to taking a step back each year. You might want to point to injuries (Revis &Holmes) but many other teams suffer injuries and yet still win. Look at Pittsburgh with qb, rb, wr, and defensive key player injured this year.
Last year and into hte beginning of the off season, the focus for many here was on Schotty. Putting aside the relative assessments of roster v. coaching as the cause for the offense's woes last year, the apparent assumption many made was that Schotty was not putting the kind of O out there that Rex wanted. Putting aside the problems with that argument, seeing as how Schotty reported to Rex, and did so for three seasons, there was a further implication to that point of view. And that was that if Rex got the kind of O he wanted, the kind of coaching on offense he wanted, the O would be improved. So Sparano came in, and was supposedly hired because his philosophy is more in tune with Ryan's. I think there is actually little doubt that Sparano in fact is more in tune with Ryan in that respect. The only problem is the O has gotten worse, not better. To be sure I am not saying this all falls on Sparano. In fact it is more clear than ever that the roster is the major problem here. But, as you allude to, Rex has been a problem there, too. Too much emphasis on D in the draft, and some whiffs on drafting for O like VD, and guys like Woody leaving, LT, Faneca, Jones, and not being replaced with adequate younger players, and you have what you have now. But I also think the overall emphasis on "ground and pound" is misplaced in today's NFL. So, both in terms of his imput on drafting and roster decisions and for his philosophy on coaching, I don't think Ryan any longer inspires confidence in his ability to be constructive in setting up the O.
First of all the OL has improved under Sparano/Guge. That can't be denied. I think the struggles on O are more to do with personnel than anything else. You're seeing Sparano dial Sanchez down in recent weeks, he is adjusting. The personnel problems could fall on a number of ppl but I think Tannenbaum, Bradway and the scout team should take most of the fall for that.
I'd agree sparano has done some good things. Rex is the head coach I don't think it's unfair to hold him accountable. It's not like he hasn't been given enough time. My general sense is Rex's plan was ground and pound defense first. Like Big Blocker said that style isn't for todays game that favors air attack centric offense. I just don't think we are pursuing a winning plan and this won't change unless we get a new head coach and a GM. In addition win or lose the games are difficult to watch
we should have won the texans game and the first patriots game. instead we turned it over horribly in big situations. we should have beat miami, they are a terrible team. we should have at LEAST been much closer against teh seahawks, but that horrible endzone pick change the complexion of the game. hell if we win even ONE of those we'd be in the playoff hunt. had we gone with either of the other 2 qbs we'd be in better shape. i hope Rex/MT/sanchez are all gone next year. they deserve to lose their jobs
regain what form? the form from the past where he was still one of the worst qbs in football and a turnover machine?
Another point here is that if you look at the points differential, those losses look even worse. The Jets dominated Buffalo, but other wins were hardly dominant. One point over the Cards. An FG to beat Miami. Meanwhile only two of the seven losses were by less than a TD. Other point differentails were 34, 17, 21 twice, and 30. The Jets did not merely lose those games. They were embarrassed in them.
IMO, Oline improvement is due to change in blocking schemes or play calling. Short version, we are blocking with attack angles a lot more now instead of straight forward blocking.
The team QUIT on Rex against Miami after the coaches quit on them in NE. A horrible, horrible game....I will remember that ASININE slant-call to Schillens on 3rd down forever, like Steve Nelson/Pat Leahy.....Mark Gastineau/Bernie Kosar....etc.
This whole "team quit" is so overblown on this site. What they quit for him and then decided to win 3/4 games? No, they played bad. Playing bad is not equal to qutting. We wouldn't have 3/4 games if this team quit on Rex. Give Rex some credit, he has these guys playing during his worst season here. And we all know Braylon loves Rex. No way this teams quits down the stretch. Could they play bad and lose all 3, yeah, but that doesn't mean they quit
I haven't seen every game but I tend to agree. The only game I saw that they might have quit was in the 4th qtr of the 49ers game. I am critical of Rex but one thing I say about him, players like him and for the most part play hard for him. Sometimes ppl mistake offensive ineptitude for quitting.
Yeah there is a difference between playing bad and "losing the team" or the "team quitting". People equate the two, but it isn't accurate. If the team quit, we would be 2-14 right now. They could have folded up after the MIA loss or the 2nd NE loss but they haven't. There is no way our team is good enough where we could "quit" and still somehow win games
Also, there's "quitting on the coach", which effectively ends the season, and "quitting a game". In several games, it did look like the defense quit in the 2nd half. Granted we were getting our butts whipped and the offense was actually making things worse. While I don't like to see it, it's kind of understandable. This latter one is something that a team can bounce back from though.
We can't excuse the Jets so easily for having (almost) all of their losses against good teams. I'd find it troubling that they couldn't eke out one single win against a good team, if they were to pose as one themselves. Isn't it what they say about being a great team: you should break even against other great teams and beat up all the other inferior teams? 0-6 is a far cry from 3-3 against the good teams the Jets have faced.
See I tihnk the Jets defense is just not a good tackling team. They showed it against the Jags and Cardinals too but kept in check. But my point is do you think if the Jets team "quit" they could be a bad team half heartedly? I don't they're good enough to do that. So it means they're still trying for Rex, albeit they aren't very talented, but they are trying not quitting
It's easy, and even tempting, to write it off as "we lost to who we should have lost to" but the simple fact is we were in two games we expected to lose, whoop de do, we showed up and found a way to lose. Most of those other games, we got schlacked. This tells me that we can't beat the good teams even if we show up, and we can only beat the bad ones. The reason I feel that Rex SHOULD be on the hot seat, and should be gone, is that he does not do a very good job of preparing this team. Ever. They come out flat almost every week, even in playoff games. How many times can we look back and say the Jets came out REALLY ready to play and played a full game? Week 1? Even the classic defeat of the Patriots in the '10 playoffs we started out somewhat slow. They marched the ball down the field, we picked it off, ran it almost all the way back, and then missed a gimme FG after going backwards. The team is undisiciplined both on and off the field, and just makes too many dumb mistakes, misses too many tackles, etc etc etc. I know Rex isn't going anywhere, but he absolutely should.
