this trade is bad he is not better than what we have barlow over the last 2 years has lost starting job twice 1st it was maurice hicks and last year it was too frank gore. this guy is no true starting rb the only time he was every effective is when he was runnning behind garrison hearst. it was a desperate move by the jets org.
Houston and barlow are pretty much same kind of backs.. but i dunno let see who makes it maybe barlow gets cut.
you dont have to go to a niner message board....i live in the SF bay Area and every niner fan ive talked to really doesnt care about Barlow leaving the niners...they see their team is going nowhere and their future RB is Gore...at least they think that...they say Barlow sucks and cant hit the holes very good but if you watch any of the niner games..their damn Oline doesnt make any holes...which is why Barlow has had some average numbers....he can be a decent every down back with a little O line help...if the jets O line gels early, look for Barlow to be a great deal...although i see this being him taking 60% of the snaps and the rest of the snaps being a RB by committee type philosophy
the problem is we as Jet fans are always going to be discontent with whatever our team does! bitching is part of the pledge....if you dont agree to bitch...they dont let you be a Jet fan...only the select few that can turn a football celebration into a Greek Tragedy will be chosen to root for the jets on a side note..i agree with P2C....this incessant whining is kinda annoying
i must say though..since heard about this deal i have not been a bigger fan of blaylock starting. barlow makes me wish we would have just stood pat.
Here's today's Daily News article on the trade. Cimini believes it to be a fourth round pick for Barlow, as previously mentioned on this board. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/story/445276p-374965c.html Jets hand off to Barlow BY RICH CIMINI DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Monday, August 21st, 2006 Here they go again. For the second time in six days, the Jets have traded for a running back who underwent knee surgery last January. This time, they hope he can pass the physical. Kevan Barlow, say hello to the MRI machine. The Jets, apparently convinced that Curtis Martin (knee) isn't going to be ready for the season, traded an undisclosed 2007 draft choice to the 49ers yesterday in exchange for Barlow, once considered a rising star. The pick is believed to be a fourth-rounder. Barlow, who was singing "New York, New York" in the locker room last week amid swirling trade rumors, received the news at the 49ers' team hotel as he was preparing to board a bus to last night's game in Oakland. Instead of a visit to the Black Hole, he took a red-eye to New York. This morning, Barlow will undergo a physical, which no longer can be considered a slam dunk. Five days ago, the Jets flunked the Browns' Lee Suggs because of concerns about a knee that was surgically repaired in college and again after last season, although the latter was only an arthroscopic procedure. Barlow missed the final four games of 2005, and he, too, went for a 'scope in January. He didn't participate in a May minicamp, raising questions, but he hasn't missed any time in training camp because of the knee. After killing the Suggs deal, the Jets focused their attention on Barlow and the Falcons' T.J. Duckett. Why Barlow? The Falcons' price may have been too rich for the Jets, who might not have been willing to part with wide receiver Justin McCareins or a third-round pick. "We have been impressed with Kevan's production in both the running and passing game," GM Mike Tannenbaum said in a statement. "We feel Kevan will complement our running-back group, and he will come in and compete for playing time." Evidently, Derrick Blaylock's performance Saturday night in Washington - 46 yards on 10 carries - did nothing to dissuade the front office from pursuing a back. Barlow, a third-round pick of the 49ers in 2001, emerged as potential star with a 1,024-yard season in 2003. He received a five-year, $20 million contract, but his production dropped to 822 yards and 581 in 2004 and 2005, respectively. His 3.3 per-carry average last season was the lowest among the league's top 35 rushers. And he's due nearly $10 million over the final three years of his contract. That he played behind a poor offensive line was a factor in the dropoff. Barlow also turned off some in the organization with his attitude. He clashed with former position coach Tim Lappano and fought - literally - with former backfield mate Fred Beasley. Indeed, Barlow doesn't sound like an Eric Mangini type of player. He has been described as a "Me" guy, which won't sit well with the new coach. Just last week, Barlow boasted to a Bay Area newspaper, "Guys like Larry Johnson and Clinton Portis, I feel I can do everything they do. I just haven't been in the position or had the opportunity . . ." From all indications, Barlow was a team player last season, but became expendable because of Frank Gore's emergence. "This is a great opportunity for Kevan, because of New York's need for a running back," said 49ers coach Mike Nolan, who assured Barlow last week that he would not be traded. Years ago, Barlow was mentioned in the same breath as Martin. Both grew up in tough Pittsburgh neighborhoods, both attended Pitt. The Jets hope the similarities don't end there. CHAD PENDING: The Jets didn't say yesterday whether they expect QB Chad Pennington to be at practice today. Pennington was excused over the weekend because his father, Elwood, is hospitalized in Tennessee. The team probably is hoping that Pennington, the presumed starter, will be able to play at least a half against the Giants. . . . On paper, the battle for backup QB is too close to call between Brooks Bollinger, Patrick Ramsey and rookie Kellen Clemens. . . . CB Justin Miller, who had a rough day against the Redskins, could be replaced in the lineup by David Barrett.
From what I've read Barlow is an exceptional blocker which can only help. For a 4th round choice I can't be unhappy. Even if it changes to a 3rd I can live with it. I hope it can't go further.
barlow is not that bad the 49ers havent had any off line the past few years and look who there qbs have been the past 2 years when he ran for 1k yards that one year look at his qb and wide recievers then if im not mistaken to and garcia. so i dont think hes as bad as people say
Doesn't seem like a team player/mangini guy to me. I hope he doesn't become a distraction in the locker room if he splits carries with the other guys we currently have. There is no denying he now becomes our starter, his potential is much higher then anyone we have on the roster.
I feel like we just traded for a John Abraham type player, except at least John produced on regular basis.
Barlow is actually more accomplished than Suggs. When the Niners had a decent line he didn't look that bad. So I really don't know why people are so negative towrds this deal, when the Suggs trade was much more embraced? Is it the draft pick? I'm taking a wait and see approach, but it seems a lot of folks are down right pissed about this. I don't get it.
You guys are getting bent over a 4th round pick. If he pans out we win. If he sucks its a 4th round its not the end of the world not every pick or trade works out.
Yes its the draft pick....For some reason or another we usually strike gold in the 4th round, so losing it does suck. If we could have traded a player like Jmac or Strait though.....it would have been fine IMO.
Being that three-quarters of this board was happy with a 2nd rounder for McCareins, the reaction to a 4th rounder for an guy who has actually started and produced at sometime in his career is surprising.
