If the Jets draft a guy like Iupati or Pouncey, Wayne Hunter can kiss that blocking tight end package goodbye. Our coaching staff would get them on the field.
Wayne Hunter is fucking useless. I really hope the Jets grab someone who can drop him off of his roster spot.
Another blocking tight end would be nice. Hunter provides versatility and depth. I think he deserves a roster spot, but he shouldn't be on the field unless there's multiple injuries on the line.
Listening to the weekly ESPN podcast from last week, when discussing the Jets McShay thought front 7, but that they'd go Bryant or Thomas if they were available. Kiper yet again mentioned TGG favorite, and Batman suit wearing, Taylor Mays.
Once again Mr. Kiper proves he's all about the names and not about the needs. He's been hyping taylor mays since the end of last years draft and will never hop off his royal USC cock.
That actually makes sense. Give McShay a point in the "non-retarded comment" column He'll see us at Mays' HOF induction.
Odrick's stock will probably rise in the next 4 weeks, 3-4 DE's are a premium. Tyson Jackson was overdrafted...Odrick will be also, although not as high.
Put me down as one of the few who wouldn't mind Taylor Mays. He'd present tremendous value at # 29...and when you have an elite roster...you don't pass up clear value. Mays has obvious strengths including speed, size, and tackling. Rex is well known for scheming around players strengths...and putting them in position to succeed. Although he doesn't have great coverage skills, let's not forget that who we have at the corners as well as the fact that safety coverage in Rex's scheme is not very complicated or hard once the pre-reads are established. The pressure packages can cover up alot of potential mistakes. I think there is something to be said to adding a big, physical imposing S who can play in the box and shut down that Miami Wildcat and potentially that Balty power running game. I also think he could be an elite blitzer off the edge in this scheme...which is certainly something to take into account. I know everyone is proclaiming him this class's Gholston...but consider this: Mays has had multiple successful college seasons and has been heralded as an elite prospect since he was a sophomore...Gholston literally had 1 season in which he played only a handful of dominant games. The bottom line is this. Do I think Mays is a complete safety capable of flourishing in coverage? No. But do I think he could be an extremely value commodity for Rex's bag of tricks? Absolutely.
Understatement of the year. I nearly choked on my beer when Goodell announced his name as the 3rd overall selection last year.
i think because the Safety talent pool is quite deep in this draft....we could afford to pass on Mays without blinking an eye. I'd rather pick up somebody in a later round (Nate Allen, Chad Jones, Morgan Burnett for example) who can actually cover...as well as bring the heat. just my 2 pennies.
I can buy that opinion as I do agree there are going to be some good safeties available well into the 3rd round. I do think however that an argument can be made that Mays brings some things to the table that no other safety in this draft can match. It's all gonna depend on what rex wants back there. I do think an argument can be made to add a big, fast and physical safety who can play in the box, blitz and be an enforcer who compliments the finesse talent we have at CB...of course sacrificing some coverage ability.
I'm a big fan of the Jets trading down out of this pick, but there are two scenarios in which I wouldn't mind seeing them trade up. If Sergio Kindle or Dez Bryant fall into the 20s, I would be pumped if the Jets made a play to move up. Kindle would solidify our LB core, and Bryant would provide a future #1 receiver to develop alongside Sanchez. Now if only we had a 3rd rounder to package with our 1st.
I respect your opinion, Kurt. The Tebow pick made me scratch my head, but whatever. If for some reason the Jets took Mays at 29, I'm sure everyone would freak out, and justifiably so because he follow the blueprint of a bust very well. But no one on this roster hits like a freight train like he does. Harris and Scott have their moments, but receivers usually don't have to worry about them like they do a safety. If Mays lived up to his potential, or at least some of it, Ryan could use him as a blitzing safety a la Smith/Leonhard or as an enforcer in the secondary. John Lynch was a great safety for a while as primarily a hitter. I'm not an advocate of Mays at 29, mainly because if we were going to take a guy like that and use him as a blitzer, I'd like him to have at least one career sack. Plus, most of his YouTube clips are big hits. You have to wrap the top NFL receivers, you can't just hit them with your shoulder and expect them to fall like a house of cards. But the NFL is moving more towards a specialization sport, and Mays's physical attributes are second to none, and he was fairly productive as well. If we drafted him, he could be a lot of fun to watch in a Ryan defense.
