Jay Cutler = Jeff George drafted onto a better team. No thanks. The reason, BTW, that Denver missed the playoffs last year is that in the last 3 games Cutler's play dropped dramatically despite the fact that he was playing against average to poor pass defenses. San Diego was rated 31st in the NFL in passing defense and his lackluster effort basically lead to a rout against his team. A great QB would have been feasting on that defense. A good one would have been leading scoring drives. Cutler lead one scoring drive followed by two punts and in interception and game over.
If he is available we must at least make an effort in order to satisfy me as a fan. i've been down for almost 2 decades. this may be the year we can finally put together some long term(young) pieces and reach the superbowl within 2-3 years.
Cutler and his agent sound like spoiled little bitches. No thanks. Every team should entertain trade inquiries. It doesn't mean he's on the block and Cutler is taking it waaay too personally. A 25 year old QB refusing to take calls from the HC? No thanks.
If I may throw a little twist here, J. Cutler is an excellent QB with a very good arm and the rest of the skill set you need from a pro QB. Yet, if the previous statement is true, which we all know it is, why in the world would you even consider trading him for a one season wonder? It is my belief that there is more here then meets the eye and things are going on behind closed doors and have gone on behind closed doors in the past that have brought this whole situation about. Again, ask yourself, why would any leveled headed GM or HC trade away a franchise QB when the biggest need on your team was to improve the defense. I honestly believe this kid may be more trouble then he is worth. Again, I don't deny his skills but the leader of your team has to have more then physical skill. I find it interesting that others have compared this kid to Farve and the fire he brought to his game. Yet, if you think about Cutler and say, Rivers in SD and the things we have seen there you have to wonder if his elevator goes all the way to the top. I mean how often have you seen two offensive guys talking crap to each other as opposed to a D guy and O guy who go at it every series. Plus, with Farve there was always kinship after the game was over and his opponents always seem to have great respect for him. This was true even when he was young, this does not seem to be the case with Cutler. Seems many very good players dislike this kid and not because his game made them look foolish, but because he has a habit of degrading people. No fans, there is more here then meets the eye and the cost of acquiring a possible head case would be huge. In the end I am encouraged that we have stayed away from the aging, over the hill ,other teams cast offs QB market. When the Jets introduced Rex and then said they would not acquire a Vet or cast off QB, they appear to not have been blowing smoke up people asses. At this point they certainly seem willing to give our own QB's a shot at taking the job. This tells me in spite what the experts have written and many on this board believe , that in fact we do have talent in the position already and it will finally be developed.
The reason Denver would trade Cutler right now is that they have SEEN a great franchise QB in operation in Elway. They know from watching Cutler for 3 seasons that he is not that guy. He's not going to lead them to the promised land. He's not going to carry that team on his shoulders when it needs to be carried. He's not a winner. He's a good passer, but not a winner. See Jeff George for the archetype of that kind of QB. They're interested in trading him because his perceived value in trade is much more than his real value on the field. I'll bet you they trade him at this point and in 3 years we're all laughing at the team who acquired him and watching the Broncos back in the top tier with what they picked up in return.
It should tell you something that the only reason they considered it was because he would reunited with his own quarterback that already knows his system and has had success in it, as well as getting a first and third round pick. So this "whiny bitch" is held in pretty high value to the guy that knows more about QBs
How the hell do you compare Jeff George to Jay Cutler? Cutler is way better. Just cause he's an ass? So what.
Cutler was drafted onto one of the best franchises of the last decade and they've gone downhill from there. George was drafted onto one of the sorriest franchises of the 80's and never saw them improve. The difference in their circumstances largely creates the differences in their performances early in their careers. George, BTW, was a much better prospect coming out of school than Cutler. He was a consensus top 5 pick who wound up drafted first overall and got the richest rookie contract in history as a result. He didn't add a lot to his teams though despite good to great passing performances. He had a knack also for having lesser performances in more important games and he fell out of favor everywhere that he played in the NFL despite having some really great individual seasons. Cutler is like a poor man's Jeff George. If he was a really good QB then drafting him would not have gotten Mike Shanahan fired. He would not be on the block with a new head coach who knows what a great QB looks like from up close coming into town. He's a good passer but he's a mediocre QB. Just like Jeff George only not quite as good.
Finally someone who echoes my sentiments. I listed all of the above stated reasons in several of my posts. I'm shocked that people are so enamored by another "big armed" gunslinger. There have been a plethora just like Cutler before him and will be just as many after him. I love all of the "give him some defense" or he's got a "linebacker attitude". None of that shit means a damn thing if the guy doesn't win big games. There are much worse teams than Denver, personnel wise, who have won more big games over the last 3 years. The results speak for themselves. Cutler isn't a winner. End of story.
If Cutler had stepped up and had one great game over the last three where he lead the Broncos to a victory then Mike Shanahan would likely still be the coach.
No question. Cutler was Shanahan's pet project and it blew up in his face when they couldn't win a big game.
In a second I'd take Cutler in a second! One great game? He beat our asses when we needed a win in terrible weather this November. Did we forget about that? He looked pretty good to me that day. He made Favre look like the inexperienced QB who wasn't prepared for a cold wet windy day. I think he could be great here. I'd take my chances with Cutler in NE against Brady in a December game. Cutler has all of the tools, and might be a bit of a prick. So what? I say jump on the opportunity while it's here. He won't be available for long. Jeff George? Are you kidding me? Are you going to say you'd take Cassel over Cutler? That's crazy. I'd be happy as hell if Cutler somehow became a Jet. I still wouldn't buy a PSL, but I'd be happier about it.
Also, Denver was 7-4 with Jake Plummer at QB in 2006 when they put Cutler in at QB, they promptly fell out of the playoff spot and haven't been back since.
Cutler didn't play well in that game at all. We sucked it up on both sides of the ball and that is why we lost. On top of that, if the refs hadn't f'ed up that Cotchery 'fumble' or Elam hadn't botched an easy sideline tackle, then we could have been tied or even up by half-time.
Not that I support trading for Cutler, because I don't (I think he's a jackass with a great arm and a f***ed up head), but who thought that a drooling hick like Eli Manning would lead a team to the Promised Land before the 2007 season? It doesn't take a HOF QB to win the Lombardi.
I'm not for trading for him. I don't think I'd be angry either, though. Cutler was the QB of a team with a top 3 offense and bottom 4 defense. And Like Badger pointed out [sorta] with Manning vs. the Chargers. Manning's two games, he threw for 565 yards. Cutler's two games, he threw for 666 yards. The one major difference. Cutler wouldn't need to throw the ball 50 times a game with our offense. That is a big difference maker, and he would be a pretty damn good fit.
