Coleman was drafted to play in a cover-two defense. He was unexpectedly good in that defense and we developed a view of him that was not consistent with his overall ability.

The cover-two went away in 2006 and he's been iffy to poor since then. We didn't just change fronts under Mangini, we changed the entire defensive scheme. The scheme that we're playing now, with heavy reliance on DB blitzes, inevitably leaves the defensive backs who are not blitzing with different responsibilities than the cover-two which relies heavily on a 4 man rush to get things done.

He didn't slip. A large square of turf (2x2 if not larger) flew out from underneath him. It was happening the entire game to everyone, he just drew (no pun intended) the biggest piece of the game.

I agree more with Miamipuck than Beaman... Rhodes is best utilized when he's allowed to roam deep and use his instincts to make plays in the passing game.

Lets be real guys, Coleman was Just-Another-Guy who didnt have all that much talent. He was a somewhat competent safety when the rest of the defense did their jobs. FWIW I only went to 1 Jets game this year so maybe I dont have the comprehensive knowledge about Elam, but from what I've seen I'd much rather see what we have with a more talented kid who is faster, hits harder, jumps higher, and is taller. He seems like a pats type player which is probably what Mangini likes. See if you can coach him up and get him to stay in his assignments and develop smarts.

  4. SPot on. Coleman was brought here to play in a cover 2 base defense. The more aggressive schemes that mangini brings to the table do not fit his skillset. Additionally, Coleman was a "What you see is what you get" type prospect..who maybe a solid back-up..and was an impressive rookie..but didnt offer much in upside or development.

After that firsst season I thought we would have a Kerry Rhodes-type player back there, now he is a backup. Abram Elam sucks, I freakin hatew atchign him screw up andmake us lose games to Buffalo.

Anyway, maybe Coleman can come back and be a performer again, we know he has it in him.....he's at least an 85, maybe better

He screws up on one play in the Buffalo game and now he sucks? Unbelievable. Obviously the coaches don't think so.

No....but I don't have time to list every example, and I didn't say that the Buffalo game example is the sole reason he sucks.

The guy consistently over-runs ball carriers, and misses tackles because he doesn't wrap up.

There's no doubt that his position as a starter is not secure. In all honestly, he is porbably a prime candidate for off-season replacement. And who knows what the coaches think. He was rotated out in every game, and replaced at time by both Smith and Coleman. Eric Smith is a far better tackler, and Coleman, if he can get his game back, is head and shoulders above Elam.
