Mangini took a team that was supposed to win 4 games, to a team that won 10 games in his first year. Beat NE on the road his first try and the playoff game against NE swung when we had the backwards lateral play. In three years we went from a team of smart, hard working high quality guys to a bunch of malcontents. Favre was the cancer that killed Mangini his last year. Rodgers success in GB proves that. I am a long time Jets fan and by no means is Rex the worst coach we had, but he is a bully and the team is made up of bullies. Stand up to a bully and they back down. As you seen in the past two weeks the finger pointing is everywhere.
Browns Drafts Under Mangini 2009 1st Rd: Alex Mack C, solid talent. 2nd Rd: Brian Robiskie WR, cut by the Browns after two seasons where he had two very disappointing seasons. 2nd Rd: Mohamed Massaquoi WR, 70 career receptions, 5 career TD's averages about 553 yards per year. 2nd Rd: David Veikune DE waived by the Browns on September 7, 2010 4th Rd: Kaluka Maiva LB has started 9 games in 3 years and has 80 total tackles. 6th Rd: Don Carey CB, waived by the Browns due to a shoulder injury on August 6, 2009 6th Rd: Coye Francies CB, waived by Browns on September 3, 2010. 6th Rd: James Davis, RB, released by Browns on October 5, 2010. 2010 1st Rd: Joe Haden CB, solid talent. 2nd Rd: TJ Ward S, pretty good. 2nd Rd: Montario Hardesty RB, ehhhh 3rd Rd: Colt McCoy QB, mediocre QB. 3rd Rd: Shawn Lauvao G, don't know much about him. 5th Rd: Larry Asante S, currently on the Browns practice squad. 6th Rd: Carlton Mitchell WR, currently on the Browns with 2 career receptions for 12 yards. 6th Rd: Clifton Geathers DE, cut by the Browns. Mack and Haden aside, where are all of these successful starters you're talking about?! (either way these drafts were probably more the doing of the GMs at the time Kokinis and Heckert anyway).
o well at the very least i started a topic that has nothing to do with the current Jet locker room drama lol
Don't worry, not everyone thinks you are full of shit. I have stated this same sentiment a lot. This does not mean that I believe Mangini should be here. It doesn't, I think we have something extremely special in Rex Ryan. To everyone that seems to think that Tanny is this draft genius, is insane. The dude has proven over his tenure with the Jets that he is an amazing cap guy. He is fantastic with numbers. He is not someone that can spot talent from across the room. That is why he has all his ad-visors. He relies on these people to educate him, and point him in the right direction. Somebody was acting like he just randomly allowed Rex to make a pick, like that was his only time to shine throughout the entire draft process. lol I don't care what anyone says, Mangini had a lot of flaws, but he was a disciplined coach with a very good eye for talent. He brought in a lot of amazing pieces to this team before Rex Ryan took over. Everyone wants to point out how Mangini had so much influence with the VG pick. How that was all his fault, etc.. So many articles throwing him under the bus with that pick. Which is fine, he missed on that. I refuse to believe that VG was the only pick Mangini had influence on in the draft. He had a hand in every pick, so does Rex Ryan. If you are a GM, you are not going to bring in somebody that your HC doesn't feel good about. That wouldn't make much sense.
Rex has had two drafts where the picks are in the 20's. Also we had to trade up to get some of the players that we got. Mangini had the luxury of picking in the top 10 twice. Also, its not like Rex hasn't been able to find players like Slauson, Westerman, Dixon, Maybin and a couple of others who he found for late round picks or picked up off of the scrap heap. Also, under Rex Tanny acquired players like Cromartie, Edwards, Holmes, Scott, Leonard, Tomlinson etc.
Umm Joe Mcknight is a darn good returner when healthy. And did you forget John Conner? 5th round pick thank you very much.
if so, it ranks up there in the running for the winner of "most utterly ridiculous concept ever used to start a thread at TGG"
LMFAO at people saying Mangini had little to no say in the drafts. I've brought this up before and Rex simply has not replaced the talent as it left and his draft picks have been frankly terrible. The Jets were a top five team talent-wise in the league with Magini's drafts and team he basically handed Rex, now they are lucky to be a top 15 team talent-wise. Coupled with Rex completely losing the team I really don't understand how he escapes heat in all of this mess. BUT Mangini drafted Gholston which may have set this team back half a decade. Mangini came in as the Man-genius and everyone loved him, they loved him as much as Rex, then Mangini lost the locker room and he stunk it up. It is what it is. I really don't see how Rex turns this around, it is an absolute mess.
Mangini deserves credit for bringing in a lot of talent, but the fact remains that he was one of the worst in-game coaches that I can remember (teams would always blow the doors off us in the second half because Mangini couldn't or wouldn't make any adjustments) and the Jets completely quit on him in his final season.
Selective memories are the best. Putting aside for the moment how much relative blame or credit go to Tanny and the HC for the roster, the OP left out the single biggest screw up of the entire Mangini era regarding the roster, that being getting rid of Kendall and replacing him with Adrien Clarke and Jacob Bender. Now I know at the time many Jet fans were dumping on Kendall, but both at the time and in hindsight I think it fair to say both sides were at fault in the controversy that led to his departure. Remember how Mangini made Kendall stay in the rookie dorm at training camp and demoted him to second string for complaining about his contract? That's not really the issue. The problem was that the situation was brewing all off season, and the Jets essentially HAD NO PLAN B for Kendall's departure. Which occurred about three weeks before opening day. The Jets then brought Clarke in, who had been drafted in the seventh round of the 04 draft by the Eagles. He ended up starting four games in 05 when he replaced the injured Artis Hicks. He got hurt and was waived. He did not play at all in 06. The Jets signed him in the off season, and he "replaced" Kendall when Kendall was traded to the Redskins. The Jets also had Bender on the squad. Clarke started 14 games for the Jets in 07. He was without question the worst starting player on the team in the last twenty years, far worse than Hunter. He was waived after that season and never played another down in an NFL game. Bender was equally bad. Clarke was the turnstyle who let the NE pass rush cream Clemens, already starting due to Chad's earlier injury, and Clemens was knocked out of the game and for a couple more. Yep, I checked again and somehow the OP's pro-Mangini argument made no mention of the Kendall for Clarke/Bender move. While Mangini was HC. I wonder why...
How many false start, 12 men on the field penalties and wasted TO's did the Jets have under Mangini? Jets were a very disciplined football team under Mangini, no so much under Rex.
