The character issues are in addition to all the other issues and concerns about him. It doesnt' add up going forward. there are more important things to do than more experimentation with Smith. Life is too short for that.
yeah but he also turned the ball over 54 times in those 3 years (second only to Mark Sanchez in that stretch). Which might explain why he was always having to play from behind, why teams got up early and ran the ball a lot, and possibly why their defense was ranked so low- they were put in tough spots because of his turnovers
We're asking [Fitzpatrick] to be average here. Again average QB play would have won us 2 SBs in mark's first two years, and playoffs the rest.
That is incorrect logic. Sanchez played well in both Championship Games and was not to blame for their losses. Also, average QB play would not have beaten the Patriots in New England. Mark stepped up big that season. However, for this year, Fitzpatrick is being asked to play average as you say. I think he can pull it off too. Maybe do better.
I'm not going to belabor this point. http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/S/SancMa00/gamelog/post/ but you have a different bar than I do for well, average, and below average. Fitzpatrick is a better player than Mark Sanchez. I believe if we had him those two years we would have been better than 9-7, and 11-5, and would have beaten both the colts & steelers. Anyway, I'm ecstatic as a Jets fan; I don't have to watch this boring crap offense with the two worst starters in the NFL the last 6 years. Is Fitz the next coming, no. But he's excitingly average.
That is a good point actually. You hope that Fitzpatrick can contribute on the field and lead the Jets to some wins, but his veteran knowledge may also be able to help Bryce Petty as he learns the game. I would rather Petty learn from Fitzpatrick than Smith. Hopefully Ryan can help Geno some too though.
Curious, as a Bills fan would you take our Gailey and Fitzpatrick back with the beast defense you have now over your current OC and QB stable? Just wondering, seems like a good question given you're instability at QB.
Interesting point about Fitzpatrick and Petty. I am not aware of any independent argument that Fitz is a great teacher or anything. But given Smith's immaturity I don't want him influencing Petty.
That's a tough one. Sure QB and OC get better, but does that include those positions only? I think McCoy is a huge upgrade over CJ Spiller, even in CJ's best year. Also, Watkins is a huge upgrade over Stevie Johnson. I'd probably take my chances with this years crop, but I never took issue with Gailey's offense. I wouldn't be surprised if you guys were a top 15 offense in 2015.
Thanks for the perspective. I wouldn't be surprised if the Jet offense under Gaily/Fitz was top 30 this year.
OK, what if it was those positions only, OC and QB you kept all the other pieces. You may have answered it in the first sentence on second read if you meant are in place of get.
If Fitz tries not to do to much and just manage a game like Flacco we should be a 8-8 to 10-6 team. I solid run game with Ivory will also be the key to Fitz's success.
How was Sanchez the difference in the 2009 AFCC when the secondary couldn't stop a nosebleed from the two-minute warning of the first half on? And Greene getting hurt didn't help. Even if the Jets were better in 2010, they'd have had to be 14-2 better for it to matter since the Pats won the division at 14-2.
