I was musing and frustrated about the front office's lack of initiative to bring in better players. The better word is probably "rebuilding", but I am confused about Mougey's strategy overall.

Nowhere did I say or believed that Aaron Glenn has been trying to lose on purpose from week 1. Nobody here believes that

"Maybe it was a tank season all along"

"of course it wasn't a tank "all along.""

Both statements said by you. That's why I was surprised you said completely contradicting statement like that. But we all make mistakes, some of us are just not willing to admit it. I can let it go, no issues.

But I do wonder what you think now. When did the tank start? Did we look so bad you thought there was a tank but later realized there wasn't? Or you still think there was/is an intentional tank?

Great questions. The answers could be even nuanced as there might be a divide between the coaching staff and front office, and certainly the players.

Front office wise - if you trade away 2 pro bowlers midseason you clearly aren't trying to win any more. Those trades were after week 8 so that's a clear indication on Darren Mougey's priorities, it may have started even sooner for him because he didn't fill obvious holes, but thats speculation. His line in the sand were the Gardner/Williams trades.

I think Glenn had been trying to win all season but his line was starting Brady Cook an UDFA at QB. Thats what week 14? He said himself he's in "evaluation mode" now

players arent in on the tanking at all, they have mouths to feed.

There is always nuance. But to remind you, at that time you thought Glenn was tanking too and said this on the same thread "they are keeping it close, playing rookies everywhere, and running out the clock at halftime instead of trying to score, for example. They look like a tanking team looks to me." Running out the clock, keeping it close but losing, is not Mooge. And you are a seasoned hard core fan, so if you think it looks like a tank, even in frustration, I just think it says how bad the coaching is. And we know Glenn didn't want to lose because he then won against the Browns, where tanking would be paramount.

As far as starting Cook, most of us here thought that was the right move after Taylor got hurt. Fields is just unplayable plus he refused to play anyway. The guy is mentally gone. So, to me, starting Cook when Tyrod hurt is not an intentional tank, and I believe Tyrod was not fully healthy last week. As far as evaluation, he was asked to clarify that, and he said he is evaluating Cook, but he also gives them the best chance to win. Which I think was accurate, since Tyrod was hurt.

So to me from the coaching perspective, there was never a tank, just that coaching stunk so bad it looked like one. Now if Tyrod is healthy and Glenn still starts Cook, it does look like Glenn is not starting the better QB on purpose. He will still try to win in game, but Tyrod is better than Cook by a lot. If he is doing it, maybe he is trying to show to Woody that he is trying to get a draft pick, thinking Woody will like it more? As opposed to starting Tyrod and getting blown out regardless, which will look worse. I don't really know. But I do want another coach next year, which won't happen. And of course we need a QB.

The Jets desperately need to hire a good QB coach.

Yeah. As is the story with all London's QBs they either get worse or are just bad. Sure we can say Cook is UDFA and sucks. But Tyrod I recall played better before. We can say he got old, though we see fat 45 year old Rivers now after 5 years on the coach still playing somehow better than Tyrod. But OK. What's the excuse for Fields though? He has looked worse than Cook, he never looked that bad. The reality is, we need a lot of new coaches. Only a few should be retained. Which is why the only right move is to hire another HC, let him come in, and keep some of the good ones, like maybe Banjio and a couple of others and completely revamp the coaching staff.

I know we'll never find it the answer, but I wonder how frequently over the years Woody has mandated a tank compared to the other owners. I would bet it's an inordinately high amount.

I highly doubt it. He is not even smart enough to do it. And if he did mandate it, we have done extraordinarily shitty job tanking over the years. Like losing Trevor Lawrence is the most obvious, beating the Browns this year. Even beating the Chiefs when we were tanking for Sam.

The only person that can mandate a tank is the owner and the Jets have definitely tanked enough times while he's been the owner.

The seasons that stand out to me are 2005, 2014, 2017 and 2020.
