How is his health/production? I know he's getting up there in age and has had injury problems (multiple concussions I think?) Can anyone shed some light on what we can expect from him? Obviously we aren't getting 2008-09 Ed Reed, but is he an upgrade at this point in his career in our secondary? I know his leadership and locker room presence, along with his knowledge of Rex's system is enough reason to have him on the team, and everything else is gravy...but I'm very curious to hear the opinions of someone who has watched him play this year or late last season
What I like more, is that this shows the team is in it to win it - or at least believes that it can make the playoffs and do some damage. They were able to sell Ed Reed on that. Even if he's a shell of his former self, he can help the team, and can make a big play in a big spot. They expect to be in big spots. Even better, it shows a symbiotic relationship between our head coach and GM. They're on the same page, and that says a lot about our future.
I read that he was critical of the coaching staff and their decision making to the media a day before he way cut. Maybe that had a part in the Texans dumping him. Just a thought, as I'm trying to be optimistic about what ability he has left
i obviously don't know ed reed personally, but i think he's the kind of dude that joined the texans thinking they'd make a super bowl push and once he realized they stunk he stopped giving a shit. also, they started playing younger safeties to evaluate their team. i think he'll play better here than on the texans, but it's definitely not 08-09 reed
A post earlier on here said that it was believed Idzik was hesitant on the signing at first, but Rex was trying to talk him into it. It looks like Idzik is really practicing what he preaches (personnel/team decisions are a collective decision where everybody has a voice...and they talk about signings together and decide based on everybody's opinions)
I would imagine he is thinking about retiring soon. If I had to guess, as soon as the Jets are done with him (the end of the season, or sooner possibly if it doesn't work out) he will retire. I obviously don't have any inside information, just making an educated guess.
Big plus he chose to sign with us over the Pats. He's stuck loyal to Rex ala that 2011 quote  . For anyone who need a reminder:
Allen is a strong side safety but mostly for us he has been a big nickle safety int he box vs TE's. You basically have to look at Reed as replacing Jarret. Landry would probably play the back field SS and reed would take care of "QB'ing" the DB's form the FS side, I don't think Reeds physical abilities will limit him in this role but his knowledge will improve our entire DB core performance. This was a great pick up at this point of the season
No risk. Rex will get every last drop that's in him. Plus he'd be a good mentor to Wilson, Allen, Milliner.
Yes, he didn't look very good in Houston, but how much did his release have to do with the fact they probably had to make a scapegoat out of somebody? Also, he didn't get along with Kubiak and the coaches there
This pretty much guarantees Rex will be back next year and beyond. I think this signing was a little gift from Izdik to Rex for a stellar coaching effort for the first half of the season. Now to finish strong and make a playoff push.
Damn, we released Ricky on his Birthday. Sucks for him, but this is a business, and he hasn't done anything at all for us.
