But one told the future Hall of Famer he intended to shadow him and pick his brain, while defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman quipped others were in awe. “Yeah, I saw some of them wanted to get his autograph,’’ Thurman said jokingly of his younger defensive backs. “He has a presence about him. I’m sure a lot of the young guys have watched him throughout his career. I think he gets instant respect. He has that “it” factor, and those are things you can’t teach.’’ Because of Reed’s familiarity with coach Rex Ryan’s defense from Baltimore, they hope he will do a lot of teaching. Yes, he likely will take snaps away from some younger safeties — especially Antonio Allen, 25, and Jaiquawn Jarrett, 24 — but he also can serve as a mentor, one they would be remiss not to follow. “That’s how I introduced myself. I said Mr. Reed, how are you doing? I’m your shadow. He said no doubt, he was all for it. He’s a good guy,’’ said Josh Bush, 24. “Once the news was getting out [Thursday] I wanted it to happen, because to be around a guy like him and Dawan [Landry] is just every young safety’s dream.’’ Some questioned how much Reed has left, the fifth-oldest defensive back in the NFL at age 35. What can’t be doubted is the nine-time Pro Bowler has a wealth of knowledge to share with Gang Green’s young safeties, even if he does take away a few of their snaps. “We’re blessed in that we have some young talent at that position, ascending talent,’’ said Ryan, leaving unspoken the fact the Jets are 24th in pass defense and have just two picks from their safeties. Welcome to Dr. Reed’s Ballhawking 101. “Having him part of the team is a great thing, a great deal,” Allen said. “He’s a talented guy who makes a lot of plays, a guy who I looked up to my previous years in the NFL, a guy who I wanted to play like. To have him come play beside me, play in front of me, whatever it is, it is what it is. “We look forward to winning. That’s all we’re trying to do is win. Hopefully I can learn something from him and be a good football player, be a good teammate, do whatever I’ve got to do, play my role. I’m trying to learn something off of him.’’ Landry, who has spoken glowingly of being mentored by Reed as a Ravens rookie in 2006, helped with terminology and could play beside him as a strong safety. But Allen, who has started all but one game at free safety, could end up losing playing time, as could his backup Jarrett. Doesn’t he find that bittersweet? “Not at all,” Jarret said. “You get a Hall of Famer like that to learn from him, and Dawan and [Antonio Cromartie]. The knowledge of the game they have that we’re going to be able to learn is a great opportunity. “His knowledge is going to help this secondary tremendously. …He’s going to help us, have a huge impact.’’
I bet you would have loved going to Jets games at Shea stadium when the Mets wouldn't allow the Jets to play a game until after the Baseball season ended. I remember times when I could actually pull my hood up to see the game when Jets WR were rounding first base trying to leg out a double. I think since Woody took over it's only been 2SB for the Giants. 68 is worth at least 5 Giants SB since post merger SB are more about NFL parity then real competition among teams. Back in the 60's the Jets actually had better coaches and players and Sonny Werblin was an owner who was willing to get the players in a competitive environment. The Giants moved the chains when they got out of Yankee stadium and moved to their new stadium in NJ. The Jets moved the chains when they became equal tenants in the new stadium. It was a lot more intense back before the merger when these two teams were fighting for every fan and dime of revenue. Pre-merger the owners of the Jets and Giants weren't business partners. There was real hate. Now these guys are counting their collective revenue. If they can count our money collectively why should the fans really hate teams they don't root for?
I'm looking at Reed being no different than getting in a vet QB behind Geno, players respond well with someone like him in camp. I hope he sticks around at least for OTAs and TC as well next year. Sent from my wey aye phone using Tapatalk - now Free
I was there too Biggs, playing 5 home games in a row to end the season, 4 in December, 1st 5 games on the road, playing the whole season with the skin on the infield, in '73 only playing 6 home games...second class citizens...but Shea rocked, I wouldn't trade one second of it...
He can also own Geno few practices with a few plays make him improve seeing ballhawks like reed or byrd xd
My first game at Shea was July 1969 but didn't go to my first Jet game till 1982 and it was one of the coldest I'd ever been to. The game Stan Blinka clothslined John Jefferson. I love the Jets and Woody as an owner but I can't say we've been as model a franchise as the Giants during the period since Woody has owned the team. 2 owners and 2 coaches since the mid 90s shows a bit of consistency, we've had more turnover there since Woody. But you're right, my bad on the SB trophies, but they did get there in 2000. Just don't see us as consistent a franchise as the Giants since Woody took over. _

we've been neck and neck w/ them. change a play from the title games and we easily could have 2 SBs and them 2 title game losses. There's not a lot that separates us since around 1991.
Coslest, Carrol, Kotite, Groh, Herm, Mangini. Other than Rex and Bill, not a sterling group since 1991. Other than Handley who was awful, they've had 3 coaches total, all pretty good. _

they were awful most of the 90s too. playoff apps since 1991: Jets: 8 Giants: 9 and Herm was a good coach.
You forget that the league had to step in and put George Young in charge of the Giants. The old man Mara was running the team into the dirt. It wasn't until Young was essentially appointed by the league that things turned. Overall the Jets with all their problems since Parcells quit the team has usually fielded a competitive team. Since 97 the Jets have been a pretty good team to follow. We haven't grabbed the brass ring but we have usually been in the hunt and had a few really nice runs. I think if you look at the two teams right now fairly, the Jets look to be on the upswing while the Giants may well be a year or two from a complete rebuild. If Geno actually develops we might well have the best QB in our division in a couple of years with a DL that is going to devastate teams. I think the franchise is in very good shape.
Sure George Young needed to step in but he cemented that franchise as one of the models for how to do things. Every team has ups and downs, but be it luck or skill they've been to 3 SBs and won 2 of them since Woody. I agree that we're on the upswing and the Giants are falling, but since Woody took over we aren't on the same plane as them. We just aren't- not yet anyway. I do think we've been a lot more successful than most folks think, we just don't have the hardware to show for it. Keeping Rex in place will go a LONG way towards cementing some consistency here. _
we are, it wasn't like the '07 and '11 Giants were the dominant '86 Giants. they were decent teams that got on great runs but couldn't sustain success. Outside of those 2 playoff runs they haven't won a playoff game since 2001.
Really wish we had won that game against the patsies in foxboro too, with Reed the gang would be hoping for a division. I dont know the Patriots will lose but I hope we take care of business
I have a feeling Carolina beats them this weekend. Carolina is on fire and I think New England is very vulnerable this year.
