Don't worry, they're legalizing weed. We can just drive high instead. Might be a little more paranoid but the music in your car will sound better.

Yeah, I can't disagree w/ that. All depends if it ends in the paper or anything like that. I would try my best not to tell anyone.

Only 5 people [my rents, 2 of my friends, gf] knew about my DUI. Still like that to this day.

Yeah, but then...the 7-11 and Supermarket parking lots will be full, and the cops will be pissed because instead of multi-thousand dollar fines for DUI, they'll be writing tickets for going 7 miles an hour in a 55 mph zone.

Well I work in a juvenile detention center so obviously you can see why my job may be at risk. I paid to keep my mugshot out of the "crime times", which publishes all local mugshots. A total scam but I have to admire the brilliance

Anyways my employer has to redo background checks periodically so if I were to be convicted they would find out eventually

So far they seem to be leaning towards allowing me to stay, but may implement some sort of requirement in addition to what the court decides. Something like AA meetings...ughhhh...but better than losing my job

The worst part of all this is the fact that my house deal is on hold pending what happens in court.

Dude, since I've been in Ohio, I've interviewed several times, all requiring background checks, and I always treat my own personal one as a traffic offense, checking no for convicted of a crime, and it's not once ever been brought up to me at hiring time.

You'll be ok. Obviously IF they ask, it will already be in the past, so honesty should be cool.

    Good Luck man.

Considering what you do for a livin, BB you just lucked out. Do the AA, get the certificate and perhaps get your lawyer to angle for a expungement after its all said and done. The State/DoC usually is more supportive of employees with substance issues than private industry as they most likely have invested a large amount of time in your training and so forth. If you're in a union, all the better. Make sure your Lawyer plays up the AA/substance abuse help angle too.

Regarding your mortgage, the hold up will be the financier (bank/credit union) waiting to see if you keep your job. No job, no mortgage. DUI's don't affect your credit, but they will affect your ability to earn a living down the road.

Next time BB, call a f'n cab or call a buddy. Just don't try your luck again cause the next time, they're gonna tear you a new one.

I advised you before to go thru with the house deal--not that you listened and I said not to tell your job---that's your prerogative---but why is the house on hold?

Because it isn't certain that I won't lose my job yet. Not to mention any hikes in insurance may put me in a place I don't want to be in financially getting into a long term loan

Trust me I'm never doing this again. Having to face my wife afterwards was awful and embarrassing

I had a DWI back in 2008 here in Hawai'i. Got pulled over for not coming to a complete stop (should really be a yield sign but whatever). They give me a field sobriety test which I aced, I even recited the alphabet backwards to prove I wasn't drunk. They still went ahead and made me do the breathlyzer and I blow a .16, which is considered "highly intoxicated". I guess consuming 4 Heinekens over a 3 hour span as a 135 pound person will make you highly intoxicated.

As for the legal part, I really wanted to own up to my mistake and take responsibility for it, even though the .16 was still bs to me. The public defender tried to get the case thrown out but wasn't able to. On the day of court, the officer did not show up until just before my case was called. I plead no contest and had my license suspended for a year, and had to take an alcohol assessment with a psychologist ($60) and an alcohol abuse class.

I ended up losing my job about a year later, and the fines and fees were too much for me to pay at the time. Now seven years later, I still don't have my license.

I wish you the best of luck with your case, and I hope that this experience can be something you learn from. Be thankful that you are still alive and that your actions did not cause injury or even death to someone else.

DUI's are all about the money. A friend of mine got pulled over and blew a .06 on the breathilizer and was still arrested for DUI. Even though the legal limit is .08 in Tennessee. It was a State Trooper who was just trying to fill his quota of arrests for the month. Luckily it got thrown out, but it cost $2500 for an attorney. Also, the local paper has been getting retired and active troopers to admit there are quotas. In Tennessee if you refuse a breathilizer it is an automatic admission of guilt. Did you have any witnesses with you corroborate your version of the events as they transpired? Good luck, a DUI can cost upwards of 10K.

If your wife is anything like mine, I pity you BB. My wife would have started out slow, then ramped up to a full fledged rant.

Yeah--I get this and my heart goes out to you on this crappy situation. As hard as it is, you can't let it run your life. I pray everything works out but you are making it into a bigger thing than it is.

You're punishing yourself by giving up the opportunity to buy a house. Now is the time to close the loan while you still have a job, no record, etc. I hope you already got far enough so that the bank checked with your HR dept. If not, you may have screwed yourself by telling the job about it if in fact your boss informed HR.

If the bank already checked with HR and approved the loan, get the house. If you then lose your job, you will have to figure it out. No matter what it's going to be tough if you lose your job. If you lose the job, getting a loan later on is going to be a bitch and making the rent is not going to be so much easier than making the mortgage. Why give up the house just cause you feel scared of the worst case scenario? It probably won't happen but even if it does, you will just have to conquer it when that time comes.

Got mine 15(?) years ago, as did most of my friends. We all learned the hard way. But it was the best thing in my life (blew 2.1). We would drive obliterated and not even think about it. We were lucky though, we didn't maim or kill anyone. Losing my license for 6 months taught a valuable lesson. As i'm 40+ now, if i know i'm drinking more than 3 drinks, it's taxis/uber. As much as i don't wish dwi's on anyone, take it as a blessing you didn't kill anyone, then your life is fucked. I told my boss at the time ( i work for a big company), nothing came of it. my advice, if you can show up at work on time, stay mum.

sorry i can't offer any advice. only experiences. one of my buddies lived in DC when he got his. 4 beers at a hockey game, he blew a .08 (which was the line at the time). Cop wouldn't give him a break and he (honestly) felt fine. Cop pulled him over for license bs. but as with the rest of us, lesson learned.

So Grandpa, she grills you like you grill your meat huh? Slow and steady. :)

The best treasure for a man, is a caring and loving wife who would grill you when you make a mistake. I love my wife as she grills me regularly when I drink too much or gamble too much etc.

So out in the middle of nowhere there is a lone roadhouse, the only place within twenty miles to get a drink. The only other thing around is a closed up gas station across the highway where every night at closing time a cop sits in the shadows waiting for some poor sucker to make his night. This particular Saturday night the place and the parking lot are full. Right around last call a guy slowly comes through the door moving slowly and not going real straight. His shirt is half tucked in, half out and the one shirttail keeps getting in the way as he searches his pockets for his keys. He finally finds them and promptly drops them on the ground; in trying to pick them up he lurches and almost falls. He then goes to his right looking for his car and walks around that whole side before going to the other side where he finds his car right in the front row.

The cop is sitting there like a hunter who has a twelve point buck walk up and ask for a light. Meanwhile the neon lights are going out and the rest of the patrons are starting to leave. Shirttails now clicks his fob to unlock his car and proceeds to open the door and get in...the back seat. The cop is really down but since nobody else is nearby he waits it out a little longer until our guy extricates himself from the back seat and slides in behind the wheel. By now even the bartender is gone and our guy starts up and backs out without lights. Somehow he gets his headlights on just before he hits the highway and slowly accelerates just as the world around him comes alive with brilliant red and blue lights.

He slowly pulls off the road and parks on the side while the cop almost runs to collar his prey. The cop is somewhat surprised when the driver has his license and registration all ready for him and calmly asks "what seems to be the trouble, officer?" He orders him out of the car and to recite the alphabet backwards from "Q" which is done like he was ordering his morning coffee. The cop then tells him to stand with his arms out to his sides and one foot off the ground - Baryshnikov could not have done it better. So the cop waves the pen and flashlight in front of his eyes and his pupils react like a class of third graders in front of Sister Margaret. The cop finally makes him blow the roadside tester and gets 0.00%.

Now he's pissed and curious and says to the guy "I saw you get lost in the parking lot, you dropped your keys, you look like a homeless bum and you got in the back seat of your car - how can you look so drunk and pass all these tests? The guy says "It's easy, I had nothing to drink tonight there were two hundred people in the place and each one of them gave me ten bucks to keep them from getting busted going home - I'm the designated decoy, have a nice night."
