True, not relying for the season and 100% certainty are night and day different. Further the premise they based it on was Becton was out of shape and overweight as the cause. Both patently incorrect. If you want to blame someone, is the approach we took to not do surgery last year, otherwise he would be starting for us tomorrow. None on this is on Becton. This medical staff needs to get their shit together big time, be it forecasting recovery periods or best approach for the long term health of the player. Way too many false starts. JD knew the risk however that's why he was in negotiations with Brown to help develop our rookie and take a starting role. Should he also have know that Brown was going to get injured before game one, while he played at a pro bowler tempo the year before. Some here seem to think so.
Next year for sure everyone here will debate once again if we should be drafting an OL with the first pick. And on that point I'm 1000% certain this site will have a lot more than one opinion. Point of fact, last year wanting to draft an OL with the first pick was the minority.

yeah…well we’ll see how the season goes and how Mitchell does but looking forward from here today, I would say OT is a HUGE need and should be our first round pick, I think we need help at LB and S but neither of those are as important as OT. For fucks sake, we need to get a solid OL. Jeez, like I said before, Tannenbaum found a way to give us a top 5 OL in ONE offseason. One! Going into year 4 of JD were still fucking around with it.

of course, that view on next years draft implicitly assumes Zach is the guy, which to me so far, is FAR from certain and very much still up in the air. But I’ll assume he can show something in year two that gives us hope. Again, still to be seen, but if he doesn’t, then QB is back in the mix as he’ll have no excuses this year about being surrounded by scrubs.

i couldn't agree with you more on that. I would have had zero problems if we picked an OL last year, but I was also happy with Sauce. This year I dont care if the number one pass rusher of all time is there for us, I'll beef up the OL first and foremost.

And not one of them was drafted earlier than the 5th round. I know at least 2 are HOFers.

Sure great players can be found in any round….no better example than Brady.

    but the odds are longer

for as many late round hall of famers you can name, there are MANY more average to below average to flops players

let’s hope Mitchell can hold his own, and then JD will have the last laugh

Look I get that you can’t field a team of only first rounders…no argument there…it’s just that for a GM that preaches the trenches, that knows you need a solid OL maybe even more than other teams because we have a young QB, it’s just a bad mishandling of the Becton situation that anyone could have predicted and in fact many did…that’s all. Tannenbaum fixed our OL in one offseason…here we are in year 3 with JD and we’re still horsing around with 37 year old last minute free agents and 4th round raw rookies trying to fill a key spot. Needing time for this line to gel. It should be better than this.

I do think we’ll be ok by say mid season…it shouldn’t be the disaster we’ve had here because the overall quality is improved, but we should’ve seen Becton injury coming and we could have done better in mitigating that risk. That’s all I’m saying.

Jonathan Goodwin. Drafted by the Jets in the 5th round of the 2002 draft. I used to hate him in Madden because he had like a 37 overall rating and he never developed into anything.

He ended up being a Pro Bowl player, starting at center for 2 Super Bowl teams and won one with the Saints.

On IR and "hopeful" to play in week 5? We're cursed for sure.

This topic has been beaten to death but people only brought up Becton's weight to say it would make it harder to recover from lower body injuries. That is a fact, and it doesn't take an orthopedic surgeon to say so. I believe the stat is that every 10 pounds of bodyweight puts an additional 40 pounds of stress on your knees. Being nearly 400 pounds is primarily what turned a 6-8 week injury into a 6-8 month one.

The people taking that stance got heated because the Becton defenders were trying to argue against that simple reality, and calling people fake fans for being realistic.

Read my post. I said the second injury. He was not overweight, period, he was at a great playing weight. The calculation is not based on an average body but overweight to your own average playing weight. That is the physical fact. The second injury was due to not properly strengthening the knee surgically in the first place. Period. May be not an orthopedic surgeon but someone that understands the physics that each body is built different, and the calculated pressure increases when you increase your own optimum weight. So even the bold is incorrect. For his fighting weight and the severity of the injury that was never, ever, a six to eight week injury. And if they had the orthopedic surgeon then he got now, instead of a team doctor, they would have known that.

Ah yes, the 2013 draft where we could've drafted Kyle Long but instead went for Dee '5 surgeries' Milliner. Fortunately they made up for it by drafting franchise QB Geno Smith in the next round.

Brian Winters? Ah yes, the dirtbag who dressed down rookie Sam Darnold down in Miami on the field in full view of the Dolphins....how I wished we could have passed on him and gotten the following Pro Bowlers all of whom were available after Winters:

    - Terron Armstrong
    - David Bakhtiari
    - Ryan Jensen

and all of whom (unlike Winters) are still playing

Really hoping Brown isn't using the Jets to pad the old retirement account a la Ryan Kalil.

That doesn’t even make any sense, was that a joke because he is old? If so, then it’s bad because I don’t think he has missed much time last 3 years and coming off a pro bowl year. Plus he can still play we took a huge flier on Ryan K hoping he could find something. The two are not the same at all

Like I said multiple times. JD should have traded the #2 and built the team correctly. He had his chance – now it's gone. And you would have a fully built trench to lure any top QB to the team. We're not developing a QB in NY – so I'm not sure why the FO keeps going this route. Just build the damn line and lure a QB here – that's our only chance.

Yes, it was meant in jest. I know there is no comparing Brown being a Pro Bowler last season, to Kalil basically coming to the Jets from his couch.

We can't develop a QB in New York? Weird.

The Jets have been absolutely atrocious at finding and developing any offensive lineman in the draft which has lead to them needing to overextend resources to fill the gaps. You need to be able to fill 3 or so offensive lineman with mid round picks or lower salary players.

It’d be fine if we dumped all this time and effort into it and we ended up with the Colts offensive line.

Below is the amount of first round draft picks on the playoffs teams rosters last year.

We’ve also had realistically three-four different shots at drafting centers that can be game changers and we’ve bypassed that to keep McGovern.

I've also never understood why it's so hard for the Jets to find fat, white guys with beards.

Just go to any college and make a list of the guys that look like Matt Slauson then draft them as UDFAs. You'll eventually hit paydirt.
