I think that tyson jackson wouldn't be a bad move at all. Kenyon hasn't touched a qb since farve gave him an ass smack. I think our glaring need is CB though. If we don't get one in free agency we have to go the draft and pick up a solid started to sit across from Revis and shut things down. I personally can not wait to see what Rex does with this defense. JETS!!!
Improving the defensive line is fine with me. Expect the ends in Ryans defense to be more important then they are in the Mangini 3-4. Baltimore's defense all starts with the defensive line stopping the run so that they force 3rd and long. I think fixing this defense starts with the secondary. Basically Eric Smith, Ty Law, Drew Coleman, David Barrett and Hank Poteat need to go. That leaves Revis, Lowery, Rhodes and Elam with Carroll on special teams. I would like to see the Jets sign one of the safeties from Baltimore, Landry or Leonhard to play next Rhodes. I would sign an established corner to play opposite Revis. Doesn't have to an all pro just someone who has proven he can play corner in the NFL. Once the secondary is fixed then Ryan will be able to play his defense.
I'd love for you to be right there but have a hard time seeing him fall that far. I want to address the pass rush big time and he fits the bill perfectly.
Brown would be a 3-4 OLB in our sysytem. We kind of have a ton of money invested in that position already.Raji would be a Nose, we have Jenkins. He would be much better suited to a 3 tech. in a 4-3 cover 2 ala Sapp. McCoy will be gone. Cushing will be too.
Raji is a prototypical nose tackle, he is not 3-tech in any scheme with where there stock is now, there is a VERY good chance Cushing and McCoy will both be there
I heard three teams were scouting him as a 3 tech. at the senior bowl, right from Pat Kirwan. They see him as a Dorsey/Okoye type. I love McCoy, I have to see more from Cushing. We will be better off with a free agent LB(there are a couple from Balt. our new HC might be familiar with) than drafting one in the 1st round. 3-4 DE's are hard to find. especially potentially dominant ones. I think our biggest needs are DE/CB/S/QB/WR/RB .I don't see a CB or S worth our pick yet. I think at 17 we could get the same level of WR in the 2nd or 3rd round. I think both top Qb's will be gone. It leaves DE/ RB. We were the luckiest team in the league last year that TJ didn't go down while his back up was serving a suspension. Leon isn't a 20 carry guy. TJ is 31. I like the backs in this draft as much as last year. Can we still get a good one in round 2? Yes. If Moreno or McCoy were there I might pull the trigger. Moreno and Leon in the same backfield is scary, and Ryan said he wants an All -weather offense. Let's see how Jackson looks at the combine before you shoot him down. He will be starting in someones 3-4 D next year. Write it down.
He's fairly inaccurate because he can't predict what position teams want. I think his evaluations are spot on though. One wonderful example of this is Michael Bush on the Raiders. Coming out of Louisville two years ago (man, was it two years already?) Bush was still recovering from his leg injury. He said, give this kid time to heal and trust him to run the ball and he'll do just that. Well, two years later, Wright was right (BOOYAH PUN!). So, Tyson Jackson is a decent fit for us, but building youth behind Ellis, who just had a standout year - both on the field and with his bong - should not be our top concern. I truly believe we need to concern ourselves with a mean, nasty FS, and a wideout with a knack for the game breaking play. The only thing that sucks is our draft position. Let's see if our new coach will go for quality over quantity and trade up. Otherwise we may have to go for Jackson...
He wouldn't be behind Ellis, he would be in front of Coleman. There is a good chance Ellis could be a cap casualty this year as well.
Not sure I want to take a DE this year. I think we should go QB, LB, or trade back and take a Safety. I think Sintim is a solid pick at 23. He could very well go to New England at 23 and if they don't take him, the Giants probably would. He does everything well and is a very good pass rusher. His only problem is that he lacks speed, so his 40 time will be important. I really like Delmas too, and if we were to trade back, I'd like to see us move in to the early 2nd to take him. Sanchez, Sintim, Raji (possibly, although I wouldnt trade up to get him), Macho Harris (supposedly very good in coverage), and Vontae Davis are the guys I'd be happy with in the 1st round. Greene (Best RB in the draft IMO), Delmas, Sean Smith, Kenny Britt, Mitch King (I think he'll jump during the combine), and Mike Mickens are guys I like in the 2nd round.
Remember man, don't read too much into that early Senior Bowl hype. Delmas is good, but there's no reason to trade up in the second for him. Sean Smith is my favorite defensive player in the entire draft. Mitch King probably won't be a first day pick, but he's too much of a 'tweener at LB and DE. He'd be worth a 5th or 6th rounder because he's a guy that never quits on a play. Kenny Britt would be a great pick, but it's looking more and more like he'll go in late first... I like Shonn Greene as a power back, but he's not LeSean McCoy...and if you're in this draft, you're a running back, and you're names not LeSean McCoy, then I don't want you on my Jets. ...maybe Knowshon Moreno, but Shady McCoy is my favorite back this year...by far.
I would absolutely trade up in the 2nd for Delmas. I like him a lot, and not just because of the Senior Bowl. He's looked very good before when I've seen him, and I like him a lot more than both William Moore and Rashad Johnson. Smith would be a good pick, but I see the Jets addressing the 2nd CB spot in FA (Greer being the likely candidate). Britt could go to the Giants. They need a big WR. I like McCoy, but I think he's the 2nd best in the draft. To me, Greene is Marshawn Lynch. He goes looking for contact, and he'll knock defenders on their asses. He may not have the career longevity that a McCoy or Moreno would, but pair him with Leon for the next 5-6 years and he will have a very good career. Greene was Iowa's offense this year, and he clearly had the best year of anyone in college football. How do you feel about Sanchez in the 1st? Not sure if you saw it, but Rotoworld said it's becoming "increasingly doubtful" that Detroit takes a QB #1 overall. I think Sanchez will be there when we pick, and the fans will go insane if we pass on him. If Woody wants to sell PSL's, drafting a Latino QB with big hype will be huge. I think Sanchez can absolutely start next year in the Ryan system. To me, he's head and shoulders above Stafford and every other QB in the draft.
1. I like Shonn Greene as a power back, and simply put, that's all he'll be at the college level. I want a FEATURE back. LeSean McCoy is the closing thing to LaDainian Tomlinson. I'm not looking for a back to be Leon Washington's thunder. I'm looking for a back that can be thunder and lightning on one carry, on every carry. That back is Shady McCoy. With that being said, I don't know if Shonn Greene is worth a 2nd round pick. Right now, it just depends on who's available. Another thing: The Shonn Greene to Marshawn Lynch comparison is something I don't like -- Lynch has breakaway speed and Greene does not. Sure they both run with great power, but Lynch is a step above. If the Bills ever get a solid offensive line, I'll be worried about him on every carry. I watched him play for Cal, and he just knows how to get to the house... 2. Why trade up for Louis Delmas when he'll most likely be around for a original second rounder? That's all I was saying. He's not going to rise THAT much. He's a smallish, small conference safety with average timed speed. He may even be around in the 3rd or 4th. I like Sean Smith as a pro safety. With the way Rex Ryan uses players in so many different positions, Smith would be a perfect fit in his scheme. He can line up at any DB position and have success. Even if the Jets do pick up a couple of DBs through free agency, I'd like to see a couple more brought in through the draft. 3. Willy Moore and Rashad Johnson are guys that I've never been high on. I loved watching Johnson play at Bama, because he was all over the place, always making plays for the Tide -- but he'll get abused by NFL receivers and tight ends. Moore just looks sloppy in pass coverage to me, and he always has...one false step in the NFL, and it's 6 points for the other team. His acceleration and hips aren't THERE. I don't see him being successful in the NFL. 4. Mark Sanchez is my favorite offensive player in this year's draft. I hoped that he would enter. He's got everything you look for in a franchise QB: size, athleticism, accuracy, arm strength, leadership skills, but most importantly - he knows how to win. If Detroit passes on a QB, we still have to wait on Kansas City and San Francisco. Seattle and Jacksonville are two teams that could be dark horses in this "draft Mark Sanchez" race. Seattle and Jacksonville will both most likely go WR, but there's always that small chance. Also, the Jets have to watch out for teams trading up ahead of them...remember, Detroit has two first rounders - they could always take an offensive lineman first and then trade up for Mark Sanchez. Tampa Bay and Chicago are the other two teams to watch out for... As for Mark Sanchez starting RIGHT AWAY: I'm not sure if that would be a good idea. If Favre doesn't stay, I'd like to see a veteran like Byron Leftwich brought in to start in 2009. Sanchez has a lot to work on -- I think it will be best for him to sit and watch for a season, a lot like former USC QB Carson Palmer. Remember, Sanchez only started one full season at SC - he doesn't have a ton of experience...and that's his only true knock.
I guess we'll have to disagree on this, but I don't think there's an LT or someone close to it in this draft. Delmas will not be there in the 3rd. He's an early-mid 2nd rounder. Sanchez rules. I'd be really surprised if Seattle or Jacksonville took a QB in the 1st. For a team who really needs to rely on their running game, the Jaguars had huge O-line problems this year. I love Garrard, and I think they see him as their present and future QB. Seattle should go WR, Crabtree will probably be that pick. I like Leftwich, but he makes too many mistakes. For a Rex Ryan team, we need a game manager and someone who won't turn the ball over too much. I think Sanchez has the ability to be a solid starter in his first year and really lead the team. If Favre stays, I'm gonna lose my mind.
Byron Leftwich actually doesn't make that many mistakes. He rarely threw picks in Jacksonville, and when he did, it was when he was trying to do too much. Big Byron has ABSOLUTELY nothing to work with in JAX. They had a garbage offensive line, a garbage receiving corps, and no running game when he was there. I'd like to see him get another chance...with blocking, a running game, and some talented receivers.
I wouldn't have a problem with us signings Leftwich, as long as they give Clemens a shot to fight for the job.
I'd be very happy with Tyson Jackson, much better than Mel Kiper's (Percy Harvin), I feel that we should definitely go defense if we don't take a top tier QB or RB.
I have man-love for Mitch King. I'd really like if he were on the Jets roster. At the Senior Bowl practices the guy just never gives up. I think his positive attitude would make for a great teammate. If Gholston had 1/2 as much heart and desire as King, Gholston would have been All Pro this season. The question is where does he play ? I think he'd have to lose 20 or 30 lbs to be an OLB. And I don't believe he has the speed that is really needed. So he's kind of a man without a position. I guess at the very least the guy could be a special teams demon. But is that enough for a roster spot ? I think if Mangini were still here King would have a much better chance of being selected by the Jets. I'm not sure how much emphasis Ryan puts on these "character" guys.
The more I think about it, the more I don't like the idea of a QB in the first round. Maybe if Sanchez falls I'll change my mind. Next year seems like a much better QB draft, lets see what we have or grab a "hold the fort guy" like Garcia or Leftwich (I'd lean toward Garcia).
