The line must get better. With a better line Genos game slows down, making it easier for him to go through his reads, and hopefully makes the receivers on the roster perform better. The line is where it starts.
I agree 100%. Our line does need to get better, particularly at the guard position because we aren't replacing Mangold or Brick anytime soon (and Howard is an above-average player at his position). That being said, I don't think it'll be worth investing 7M into an OG. I think it would be a better bet to draft one in the 3-4th rounds (like we did this past year... If only Warford fell a few more spots) and have a cost-controlled option for the foreseeable future. At this point we're just arguing different philosophies, so we're just going to have to agree to disagree.
the o line is horrible but geno had all day to throw on those interceptions today. stared down receivers and was wildly inaccurate.
Larry Warford ---- everyone in this forum was right about him. He's just killing it in Detroit. Arguably the best guard drafted in 2013 (Jonathan Cooper was IR'd early). Not sure if the old-timers remember when we hit the draft in 1999 --- Randy Thomas (OG) in the 2nd round and Ryan Young (OT) - 7th round gem. Both started from Day 1 and we ran the ball behind them 80% of the time. Ryan Young was a helluva pass blocker too.
Wooh, slow down here. Granted, Geno did make some piss poor decisions, but he did not have all day. Come on
if we can somehow get Evans or Watkins in the first and Manziel in the second. I'd be all for it. unlikely that it happens, but I would strongly consider it. maybe even bring Kevin Sumlin in as our new HC.
If we cut cromartie I have been seeing mocks with Bradley Roby going in the second. If we could grab one of the big 3 receivers in lee/watkins/evans and then roby in the second that would definitely be big. Roby has the best shutdown potential in the draft this year, he has had a not so great year so far, but some say he could have been top corner in last years draft. When Dee bounces back after a full training camp next year we could have one of the best young corner tandems. If we can't grab one of those receivers in the first I think we should grab Ebron and sign maclin as a stop gap until Laquon treadwell in a couple of years. Kid is sick...
he didn't throw them because he was hurried. each one he had time to make a decision and deliver the ball right to the db.
Warford was ahead of the curve facing tough SEC teams. Warford was a steal in Rd 3, I had him as a solid Rd 2 prospect. Warford was drafted 7 spots ahead of Winters. If Warford fell to the Jets , I'm certain Idzik would have taken him over Winters. Players like Fisher, Winters and even Vlad came from small school have struggled to adapt to starting in the NFL. Eric Fisher has had a few nagging injuries, but even when healthy has had ups and downs at RT for Kansas City. The O-line is a difficult position to face the best pass rushers and to be thrown into the fire is very tough. I know Jonathan Cooper didn't fall to #9, went to Zona at #7, he was the player I wanted very badly with the Jet's first selection. Randy Thomas was a very good OG, just didn't like the way he left the Jets.
Lots of great inputs going on here. I will put a little twist into the discussion. If Geno goes significantly down hill the remainder of our games this year, then what? how does that change the draft and or free agency? Do we give him one more year, do we move up and draft a QB, or do you go free agency for a QB alas Smith and develop Geno behind the scenes? I'm really leaning towards a heavy draft/free agency of QB, OL, WR, TE and OLB and work the rest in thru the later rounds. thoughts?
If he continues to play like he did against Buffalo, you have to draft another QB. Hopefully Derek Carr. If he shows improvement, then we draft weapons for him. I would have no problem taking WR/TE/RB with our first three picks.
If we do draft a RB in the draft this year I would like to go after the best speed oriented back that we could. At this point that seems to be either Melvin Gordon or Ka'deem Carey. Wondering who everyone thinks would be the best of these two for the jets to draft, they seem pretty close in skill to me. I personally like Melvin better because he reminds me of Jamaal Charles. Similar questions regarding the other best offensive skill positions and who seem to be the top two at those positions, who would be best for Jets to draft. WR: Watkins or Evans TE: Ebron, Amaro, ASJ QB: Teddy, Mariota, whomever else you think is in that top tier(IMO, and just because Geno has been so very bad that I actually think trading up is an option now)
Bingo. Going the Miami '13 approach of using all the cap space on FA is an exercise in futility that will only haunt the franchise a few years down the road. Build through the draft and supplement the roster with FAs.
I wanted Larry Warford badly. I told everyone that Warford would be better value in the 2nd round compared to Warmack/Cooper in the top ten. Too bad Warford was 6 picks away from us in the 3rd round.
Warford was well worth a trade-up from 72 to 64 (Detroit picked him at 65). Our 3rd & 5th rounders could have gotten us there. Something for us to learn for the future.
