1. New York Jets Trevor Lawrence QB, Clemson 26. New York Jets Kyle Pitts TE, Florida 33. New York Jets Pat Freiermuth TE, Penn State 65. New York Jets Jackson Carman OT, Clemson 89. New York Jets Kenneth Gainwell RB, Memphis 102. New York Jets Joe Tryon EDGE, Washington 141. New York Jets Nico Collins WR, Michigan 144. New York Jets Roger McCreary CB, Auburn 190. New York Jets Tamorrion Terry WR, Florida State @HerndonFan
You went a little overboard on TE's IMO, one of them could be replaced by an interior OL or WR. I'd address WR before pick 141, which I believe is round 4. I like the Gainwell pick, he's my top RB after Etienne. Just my 2 cents.
I understand that, and it wasn't my first choice, and I don't think the draft would ever fall that way, but you can't draft what's not there or without having to reach significantly or take a DL, S or LB. Since I'm not a paying member, there are no trades. If I was the Jets' GM in real life, I would have tried to trade down a couple of times. I was focusing on improving the offense and building around Lawrence. I didn't care if I didn't get an Edge or CB. Unfortunately, this is not a good draft for IOL or OL in general imo, so in the early rounds, they are few and far between. At that point in the draft, there were no OL rated within 15-20 places. I think WR Terrace Marshall from LSU was rated about 10 spots lower. Freiermuth is a better player and a higher ceiling than the nearest Edge that was available. It wouldn't be ideal perhaps, but the right OC could fashion a great offense around Crowder, Mims, Pitts, Freiermuth, Gainwell, and another WR that would give opposing DCs nightmares. Look at what having two great receiving TEs did for Brady and NE. They would improve blocking for the offense as well. I wanted to draft a WR earlier, but again, there just weren't any available in that draft at those spots who were better. There was a slot WR or two, but that wouldn't help. I like Gainwell a lot, but would rather have been able to take Najee Harris. I like him second after Etienne and then Gainwell. Take a look at where TDN has the IOL, Edge and WRs rated. For the most part, they don't line up with where the Jets are picking. If the Jets' and NFL's ratings are anywhere near the same, Douglas is either going to have to trade down, reach, or take BPA and ignore needs at several of our picks.
This draft fell differently, and imo wasn't realistic because Fields fell to the Vikings at pick #12 and Najee Harris fell to the Steelers at pick #64. This draft wouldn't have nearly the offensive firepower, but would solidify the IOL and would give Lawrence a couple of weapons. 1. New York Jets Trevor Lawrence QB, Clemson 26. New York Jets Pat Freiermuth TE, Penn State 33. New York Jets Creed Humphrey IOL, Oklahoma 65. New York Jets Kenneth Gainwell RB, Memphis 89. New York Jets Tylan Wallace WR, Oklahoma State 102. New York Jets Ben Cleveland IOL, Georgia 141. New York Jets Reggie Roberson Jr. WR, SMU 144. New York Jets T.J. Carter CB, Memphis 190. New York Jets Chris Rumph II EDGE, Duke
I've been saying for a while that CB and Edge could wait until 2022 if it means the offense gets addressed in a big way next year. I wouldn't be against taking one in the 2021 draft if the CS and Douglas like a prospect. I'll take a look at TDN ratings, but I could've sworn there would be IOL and WR's worth taking with the Seattle pick. Maybe I reached when drafting as I didn't go by BPA. I understand your reasoning for taking Pitts and Freiermuth, but it looks like a less than optimal use of draft capital to me. I'd take Marshall or Rashod Bateman with the 2nd rounder to give Lawrence Crowder, Mims, Pitts, and Marshall/Bateman to throw to. There's also an outside chance that Herndon does better with a new CS to give the team two good receiving TE's without the need to draft more than one. I'm higher on Gainwell than Harris, but that's just my opinion. Harris does have some appealing skills.
Wyatt Davis is #24. Alijah Vera-Tucker (OG) is ranked #31 by TDN. Creed Humphrey is #32. Trey Smith is #39. Josh Myers of OSU is #49. I've never had a chance to draft Davis or Vera-Tucker. I was able to take Humphrey in the subsequent draft. I like Trey Smith a lot, but Freiermuth is rated #21 and is a better prospect and has less injury concerns than Smith, and I wasn't going to reach for Smith or Myers. Pitts is #11 and imo is a better weapon/prospect than Smith or Bateman, and I didn't have a chance to draft one of them anyway. In terms of WRs JaMarr Chase is #5, Jaylon Waddle is #10, DeVonta Smith is #14, Rashod Bateman is #16, Terrace Marshall is #33, and Chris Olave is #47. I didn't care if there were good CB or Edge prospects that high, because I think those high picks should be used on offense to build around Lawrence. Ossai is #19, Jaycee Horn is #20, Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah is #22, Eric Stokes is #26, Shaun Wade is #29, Derion Kendrick is #35, and Azeez Ojulari is #36. I've only seen one video of Gainwell. I've seen Harris play quite a few times. I may change my mind once I see more of Gainwell. I think he may be more explosive, faster, but I think Harris has more power. Neither Perine nor Ty Johnson are power backs, and I think Harris would be a better fit from that perspective than Gainwell. Harris is rated #40 and Gainwell is #87, and that's another factor or reason why I prefer Harris at this point, but I think I'd be happy with either one.
In this draft, I intentionally passed on Freiermuth and decided to focus on the OL and see what happened. I had to reach for Vera-Tucker as there were higher-ranked players (OTs and defensive players) there. I reached for Trey Smith as again, there were high-ranked players available. At #65 I took Moehrig because he was rated 20-30 spots ahead of any offensive player I would have wanted. I had to reach for Gainwell. By the time pick #102 came along, again it was just reaching for the best offensive player at a position of need. Ross is rated as the #141 player, so that was value and need. Collins was rated below #144, so he was a little bit of a reach. Again, if how TDN has the players ranked is anywhere near where the Jets and/or NFL teams have the players rated, I think we're going to have a hard time getting the offensive players we want. 1. New York Jets Trevor Lawrence QB, Clemson 26. New York Jets Alijah Vera-Tucker IOL, USC 33. New York Jets Trey Smith IOL, Tennessee 65. New York Jets Trevon Moehrig S, TCU 89. New York Jets Kenneth Gainwell RB, Memphis 102. New York Jets Hunter Long TE, Boston College 141. New York Jets Justyn Ross WR, Clemson 144. New York Jets Nico Collins WR, Michigan 190. Congratulations, but in essence your draft and score is why I dislike that site. It's ridiculous. Nobody in real life is going to trade down that many times, it would be a nightmare trying to sign all of them and then re-sign them 4 years later, and it really isn't even a very good draft in spite of all the picks..Those 3 QBs together aren't a scab on Trevor Lawrence's ass, and in spite of adding Etienne, there's not much help there for the offense and for whichever one of those QB win the starting job. Rousseau, Roche and Adebo are nice for the defense, but won't help the rookie QB.
LOL sorry, I didn't mean to be a downer, but it's the facts about that site. It's like playing Madden. I just don't see the point of making a zillion trades and winding up with 20-30 draft picks. I also don't like that they constantly get the Jets' needs wrong, and they have players with wrong values.
When your team loses nine straight games to start the season the draft game makes for a fun diversion. While the outcomes lack a high possibility of success it helps one learn more about the players available next year. It certainly helps me every Spring when I put together mock drafts / off-seasons / etc.
1. New York Jets Trevor Lawrence QB, Clemson 20. New York Jets Kyle Pitts TE, Florida 33. New York Jets Creed Humphrey IOL, Oklahoma 65. New York Jets Kenneth Gainwell RB, Memphis 83. New York Jets Sage Surratt WR, Wake Forest 102. New York Jets Shaka Toney EDGE, Penn State 141. New York Jets Chase Lucas CB, Arizona State 148. New York Jets Justyn Ross WR, Clemson 189. New York Jets Amari Rodgers WR, Clemson It's still very early, final draft rankings are a long way away, and all, but this draft was crazy in that I could have taken Etienne instead of Pitts, and surrounded Lawrence with his RB and two of his WRs. Even so, I'd take this draft in a NY minute. A great playmaker at TE, a new C, a starting RB who is a HR threat, a potential help with the pass rush, a KR CB who could help on D, and plenty of targets for Lawrence.
In this draft, both Pitts and Freiermuth were gone at #20 but Jaylon Waddle, Rashod Bateman and DeVonta Smith were all there. If Waddle recovers from his ACL, he has the highest ceiling, so I went with him. Ossai fell to #33 and was too good to pass up. 1. New York Jets Trevor Lawrence QB, Clemson 20. I'd take this draft in a NY minute. Things couldn't get much more comfortable for Lawrence that with his college RB, two of his college WRs, and Freiermuth to go with Mims and Crowder. With Faalele (who is 6'6", 400 pounds and possibly our future RT), Deonte Brown 6'4", 338 pounds), and Sadarius Hutcherson (6'4", 320 pounds) along with Becton and Cameron Clark), we could switch to a power scheme. Hopefully, McGovern would improve with dramatically better OG play on either side of him. If not, we replace him in 2022. Toney has a lot of potential as an edge, although he probably won't be ranked so low. Rodgers could be our future slot WR after Crowder's contract expires. 1. For some reason you're the only one who plays this GAME and doesn't post your scores lol and that is weak sauce NC!
As always, the drafts I am most pleased with get lower scores-- but I think this is an example of REBUILD, STEP 1: Your score is: 43843 (GRADE: A+) Your Picks: Round 1 Pick 1: Penei Sewell, OT, Oregon (A+) Round 1 Pick 7 (CINN): Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State (A+) Round 3 Pick 23 (MINN): Alec Lindstrom, C/OG, Boston College (A+) Round 4 Pick 1: Jimmy Morrissey, C, Pittsburgh (A+) Round 4 Pick 16 (MINN): TJ Carter, CB, Memphis (A+) Round 5 Pick 1: Alaric Jackson, OT, Iowa (A+) Round 5 Pick 8: TJ Vasher, WR, Texas Tech (A+) Round 7 Pick 21: Charles Williams, RB, UNLV (A+) Your Future Picks: 2022 Round 1 Pick 2023 Round 1 Pick I think Sewell and Jackson as RT/RG, Morrissey at C (I think he's underrated because there are several good C prospects in this draft), and Lindstrom at LG next to Becton is an OL our young QB can count on for the next 15 years. Vasher at 6'6", 215, runs a 4.5-40 and he can catch. He's pretty much the ideal guy to put across from Mims. Williams is an old-school workhorse of a back who has been easily the best player on his team for the last 4 years. Carter has been very impressive, doing everything well for Memphis. Doing everything well for AAC teams doesn't always mean much in the NFL, but he has pretty good size and speed, so he's a good bet to improve on the Jets CB situation.
Your score is: 43934 (GRADE: A) Your Picks: Round 1 Pick 7 (CINN): Gregory Rousseau, DE/OLB, Miami (A) Round 1 Pick 8 (NYG): Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State (A+) Round 2 Pick 1: Pat Freiermuth, TE, Penn State (A) Round 2 Pick 7 (CINN): Chris Olave, WR, Ohio State (A-) Round 3 Pick 6 (HOU): Chuba Hubbard, RB, Oklahoma State (A) Round 3 Pick 20: Cade Mays, OG/OT, Tennessee (A+) Round 4 Pick 1: Thayer Munford, OT, Ohio State (A+) Round 4 Pick 10 (ATL): Israel Mukuamu, CB, South Carolina (A+) Round 4 Pick 11 (DEN): Jimmy Morrissey, C, Pittsburgh (A+) Round 6 Pick 10 (ATL): Tyreke Johnson, CB, Ohio State (A+) Round 7 Pick 21: Jordyn Peters, CB, Auburn (A+) Your Future Picks: 2022 Round 1 Pick 2023 Round 1 Pick Another take on the same theme-- Less emphasis on interior O-line, more emphasis on giving the young QB plenty of weapons. Starting the draft with the best pass-rushing prospect may not appear to help the QB prospect on paper, but forcing the opposing offense into shorter drives means giving Fields more time on the field with the ball in his hands-- meaning both less time sitting on the bench, and fewer snaps spent in garbage time with the game out of reach and the opposing D in Prevent.
