I love Dr. Z's draft. The Saints would send a boatload of picks to the Jets in order to draft Dorsey at 6. NOWAY is Dorsey still there at 6.
I'm not here to badmouth people or whatnot...but if somebody like Abyzmul is gonna attack me because on my opinion...I'm gonna shove it back in his face....for some reason, he has a problem with differing opinions....I'm thinking he needs a prescription of Zoloft....but whatever...it's none of my business. Now having said that....I still think Clady is a horrible pick at 6. The Oline has been addressed in FA....albeit, i agree with Abyzmul in the fact that the right side of the line does need depth....but....i think that can be addressed in the later rounds of the draft. If the Jets are gonna pay a rookie 20 million in guaranteed money, I believe you'll get more value with an impact/skill player...especially since the Jets are in a seemingly "win now" mode.....I think it's safe to say, the Jets need an explosive guy.... Just my opinion guys..... Now the draft is a mere 4-5 hours away.....let's crack a cold one open...and enjoy the ride.
Just picture this opening day line: LT - D'Brick LG - Faneca C- Mangold RG- Woody RT - Clady The Jets would be running a misdirection offense still until Clady and D'Brick stabilized but the talent would be very strong and the future possibilities would be great. They would even have the option of swinging Woody out to RT if one of the young guys faltered and putting Moore (who is ok as depth) back in at RG.
I have no problem going OL w/ our first pick..in fact I'd love it. My only issue is w/ Clady. I like him for a team that needs an athletic/finesse left tackle type(A la D brick)...but not as a right tackle for this team. It is true that the right side needs more talent, and that we need better depth..but not only do I question Clady's ABILITY to play right tackle..but I also don't think he's the type of talent we NEED at Right tackle. We have an oozing amount of athleticm on the left side to pick up blitzes, pull guys, and getting quickness off the snap..what we don't have is a guy w/ some size and power to move the pile. THAT'S what the OL needs. Clady is not that kind of guy. A guy like Brandon Albert or Jeff Otah, I'd love. I just don't think Clady is what we need.
I won't argue that point with you but I think he is still more of a value pick at 6 than Gholston who has NFL bust written all over him.
Clady is a 21 year old junior. He's got the athletic ability to play RT and he needs a bit more mass. That's not hard to do at that age. The earlier you make that kind of conversion the more likely it will succeed. Also, he's excellent insurance against D'Brick not turning into a particularly good LT as we could always shift D'Brick inside to LG in a couple of years when Faneca starts to age out and D'Brick starts to fill out. Note BTW that I'm not suggesting he's the perfect pick for the Jets at 6, but he's certainly a strong pick if other things do not work out for them. I'd much rather drop back to the 10 and have a sniping shot at him there.
I'm surprised that many of you didn't mention that Z has the Jets bypassing Dorsey. Not that he will fall that far,but if Dorsey's availiable, it's a no brainer that the Jets pick him. Just to keep him from the Patriots if anything.
D-Rob, Vilma. Two known pre-existing medical conditions related to the legs and the Jets got burned both times. I don't think they take Dorsey after getting burned twice recently. I do think they can find somebody to trade for the 6 if he's there though. Maybe even KC giving up a 2nd, a 4th and the 1st next year.
I too have questions about Gholston... However, w/ that said...the 3-4 OLB position draft prospect wise, is one that you can take a chance on a workout warrior at. It's kind of like CB, wherein what matters most is pure athletic ability...and not so much college performance. Why? There are alot more outside factors that effect the passing game in college(Ala system, surrounding talent, scheme) that often make it hard to truly put a good/accurate grade on a guy. Now I understand that when you're investing a high pick and a ton of money in a guy, you wanna see consistent dominance week in and week out. So i too share some questions. But lets step back for a minute: 1. The guy holds the single season sack record at arguably the most prestigious college program of the last 25 years. 2- If you watch the tape on him, he got double teamed ALOT. That tells me that he helped his team win in other ways than just making flashy plays..but his very presence was a factor 3. I liked his play alot better when he was standing up, than when he had his hand down in the dirt. I saw a lack of burst off the snap out of his stance...and to me, that has caused alot of the "lack or motor" comments. When he was standing up in the 5 technique, who flew around the field and made ALOT of plays, spefically at or behind the LOS. That tells me he's a better fit for a scheme like ours, than in a base 4-3. If you study some of the past 3-4 OLB prospects who have had some success in the league(Merriman, Wimbley,Ware) they all had ALOT of lingering questions about them on draft day. Coincidentally, Merriman had alot of the same knocks as Gholston wherein he wasnt very consistent. Gholston has the physical measureables that put all of the above to shame. That's scary potential. Does potential always work out? Absolutely not. But it's def. something to think about.
Interesting take. What is your opinion of a guy like Brandon Albert, who has better size, maybe just as athletic and is very versatile?
Dorsey is generously listed at 6'1.5". The days when a defensive lineman at that height fit into a 3-4 are passing if not gone entirely. They probably were gone in the late 90's when Parcells started looking for 6'3" and taller guys to play the nose for him even if they couldn't get good leverage on a double team. The NT has to be able to get his hands up now and block a passing lane. That used to be just the ends jobs but it's the whole 3 man fron now.
Albert would be another possibility if the Jets traded down some. I don't like taking guards that high in the draft. Maybe on the 10 if that's what was there after a trade down.
Well here's the ting about Albert... The guy is 6'7 w/ a big frame and w/ alot of athleticism. There are teams that like him at LT! I dunno if I'd go that far...but i can see him long term as a damn good RT...and short term as a damn good RG.
Clady to the Jets would be a disaster, he is not fit to be a RT at the next level and neither is Brick. I don't think we are going OL first pick but if we do I'd much prefer Albert to Clady.
