Alright here it is: McCareins has a very good year for us in 2004....comes up big for us on many occasions....2005, he looks just bad overall, as does the whole team....he looks to have lost a desire, and drops many balls.....some reports say that he was hampered by nagging injuries the whole year, possibly....either way, i like him on the team now, he knows that he must perform or he will lose out on a lot of money....last chance for j-mac, i'll give him that chance

#89 keeps making plays in practice, every time I turn around #89 is catching balls and making plays.. #89 can play and deserves a shot..

that's what i meant when i said, "clearly, at this point..."

currently, Cotchery is outperforming McCareins in both practices and PS games; he showed up in better shape than anyone else, as acknowledged by Mangini. furthermore, for Mangini to say that Cotchery caught his eye while Mangini coached another team, means that maybe Cotchery should have played more last year over McCareins. i'm not sure i buy the coach/player disconnection because, to me, that doesn't translate to dropping passes and lack of effort.

i'm not giving up on McCareins either, but i think he should be demoted because, RIGHT NOW - not the end of 2004, not last year - but right now, Cotchery looks better.

    cheers

We need to move McCareins NOW, because he's going to plummet down our depth chart and have zero trade value within weeks.

Coles and Cothery will be starting. Dwight will be our slot receiver. Smith will be our homerun guy. McCareins will be the odd man out, barring injury to one of the other four.

No.... I've been to six practices. I singled out that one play as typical of how McCariens goes about his business. And it's actually pretty easy to see from 20 yards away if a player is coasting, or turning the after burners on. MCCariens has some talent, and that is what makes his play so frustrating to me. Every other player out there looks to be giving 100% just about all the time. It's no small wonder to me that he's in Mangini's dog house. It certainly seems like he is seeing the same things I've seen at camp.

A play like the one I talked about will get noticed. It really looked bad. All eyes were on him in that 11 on 11, and frankly, he dogged it. The difference between him and the other WR's is obvious.... the rest of them make the extra effort that McCariens fails to show on a pretty consistant basis. Mangini has sent him a message... let's see if he's listening.

I disagree, JMac will be the #3.. I don't think he is so far down the depth chart as everyone on here seems to believe.. The reports are that Atl wanted him for Duckett and the FO turned that down and made the trade with SF.. That leads me to believe he is not so deep in the doghouse as many believe. If I had to guess, it would be Dwight(who has never done anything as a WR) that will be the odd man out at WR..

My depth chart would look like this opening day:

    Coles
    Cotchery
    JMac
    Smith
    Dwight/Newhouse..

I don't know, Dwight has a pretty stellar career behind him (albeit most on ST) but has really shown some good things as a receiver thus far in the PS.

You have been going to TC's and believe this? Dwight is locked in at the slot, and he isn't going anywhere.... he's had a HUGE camp. I also read that Atlanta wanted McCariens AND a pick... that was the deal breaker. Right now, I think it's Newhouse and McCariens fighting for the fifth spot. I'd put $ on it.

ATL wanted him AND a 1st day pick for Duckett. Now that we've filled our RB need we'd be lucky to get a 3rd round pick from ATL for McCareins. Other than a couple clutch catches at the end of 2004, he has done nothing to justify the 2nd round pick we gave up for him. Cotch is better than him, Dwight is surely better than him (and far more versatile), and Smith will be better than him as he grows into his new position. Even Newhouse is showing more upside than McCareins could ever show us. Honestly, unless we keep 6 WR's I don't see how McCareins makes the opening day roster.

Did anybody see the replay of McCareins running a post pattern in the red zone last game? I think Clemmens was in at QB. It looked like an errant throw at first. However, after the replay I realized that it was a timing pattern. He was throwing to a spot and McCareins had to get there. The replay showed McCareins taking a year and a day to get out of his break. Midway through the pattern, he stopped to do this hour long futile dance that had no effect on the covering CB. It looked like he was jogging in place w/ 10 pound ankle weights. By comparison at the bottom of the screen of said replay showed Cotchery running the same exact route and getting out of his break with just one cut; to bad he was doubled on that play because he had the CB all turned around. If that play was any indication on how McCareins runs his routes, then it would explain why it appears that he is 2-3 steps short of getting to the ball.

Where are you guys getting this info of Atl requesting a 1st day pick along with Jmac.. I have only seen that the requested JMac and were turned down.. That would say alot.. Whatever though if he can't beat out Dwight as the #3 than he shouldn't be on the team. Dwight is crap as a WR, that much is fact..

I read McCareins and a 3rd round pick on this very board. People were even debating that we should counter-offer McCareins and a 4th. Too lazy to search for the thread, sorry. :)

The way I look at it, J-Mac is either the number 2 receiver or he is gone. He doesn't fit anywhere else.

    Coles - Clearly our #1.
Cotchery - Hard to judge, but appear to be out-performing J-Mac.
    Dwight - Perfect #3 man...speed and hands.
Smith - No doubt he gets a roster spot.
Newhouse - The type of guy that fits as a 5th reciever. Needs time to develop and plays STs.

So, either J-Mac becomes the #2 and nudges everyone else down a notch or he goes (makes no sense to make him a 4 or 5 guy). I just like the potential in the rest of the guys over J-Mac.

You can't argue his speed but if you think Jmac has inconsistent hands, wait till you see this guy play. His hands are extremely inconsistent and a major reason he has not done anything as a WR in his career.. Great STs player yes but not a good WR. .

I've seen him play. Earlier, you said you went to training camp... were you joking? Because based on what you've said in this thread, either you haven't been to TC, or you are blind. The guy has been Chrebet-like out there. The QB's, ALL of them love throwing to the guy. If he sucked... well, nevermind.

I never said I went to TC but that doesn't matter.. He has been in this league for awhile now and hasn't made an impact as a WR. His hands have been very inconsistent throughout his career & has been nowhere near "Chrebet" like, regardless of what he has been doing in TC so far.. I hope he proves me wrong but I'm not counting on it.
