College doesn't matter, Electric.....his QB skills evaporated into thin air after the Jets made him a wideout. junc, we're on the same page in regards to not wanting the OC to call a lot of gimmicky plays. But we'll have to agree to disagree on Smith's skillset. I think he's capable of throwing a few more passes.....you obviously don't. I don't think this argument needs to extend to 3 days.
College DOESN'T matter, you are right. There are a million "great" college QBs who didn't have the skill level to get it done at the highest level. B/c a player had success in college dosn't mean a thing as far as that translating to the NFL. If it did the draft wouldn't be such a crapshoot. We wouldn't see busts like Vernon gholston, he was a great pass rusher in college- how has that worked out in the NFL?
to ukilledkenny: i was thinnking about asking if BS could possibly be our #3 QB but you said no way. on the surface (BSC QB from Div1 and over 8000 yards passing) it sounds like if given the reps in camps and practice, he could indeed be 'servicable' (about all you can aks for in a #3). Plus he brings the threat of running (ala the dog killer). he may not be the 'ultimate' selection for #3 Qb, but would the extra roster spot he'd free up be worth the slight downgrade? you gotta figure if a team is down to it's #3QB, the season is over anyway.
:rofl2: You shoudl watch the NFL instead of just worrying about the draft. if you did you could actually post intelligently. I guess that post wasn't a joke? Maybe we should pick up Pat White? how about ken Dorsey? JaMarcus russell? Craig Krenzel? how about Matt leinart? Troy Smith? all big time college QBs so they must be ready to play and be successful as NFL QBs, right? Just watch college football b/c it is apparent you don't have a clue about the NFL.
this is over your head, junc...I didn't think it would be....but it clearly is. For the last time, nobody is expecting Brad Smith to be a superstar QB....obviously, that's not his role here with the Jets....but he does bring a unique skill set to the table....and QB skills happen to be on his pallet. He's not good enough to play the position on a regular basis....but he's good enough to throw once in awhile. Not once or twice a year....but once in a while to keep opposing defenses honest. FTR....Pat White is a piece of garbage......you should know a thing or two about that with all the time you spend over at Finheaven.
It is over certain posters heads but not mine. This is basic football knowledge, nothing out of the ordinary. Have you seen Brad's throws the last 2 years? This is not a guy that should be throwing the ball more frequently and throwing 8 times a year compared to 1-2 times a year is a HUGE jump. I don't care what he did in college, it's meaningless. This is not college, the players are bigger, stronger, faster, more athletic. Throws you can get away w/ in college you cannot get away w/ in the NFL and if we didn't fool the D on his pass attempts they wouldn';t have a chance to be completed. throwing more takes that element of surprise away and increases the chances for turnovers. Pat White was as accomplished a college QB as Brad Smith was. he was actually a more efficient pssing QB and was drafted to play the role Smith is playing now. he's another example of why posting what they did in college is meaningless.
well...i guess Ronnie Brown, Tomlinson, Randle El....should never attempt passes then. Skills acquired in college are rendered meaningless as soon as you enter the NFL. - nyjunc Hell, why even have an NFL draft.....we'll just pick players' names out of hat. Screw their skillsets.....it's all meaningless anyway, right?
Look at junc dropping some names. ...too bad Kenny Dorsey, Craig Krenzel, Matt Leinart, Troy Smith, and JaMarcus Russell have absolutely nothing to do with this thread. What are you even trying to prove by throwing those guys into your argument? This thread is about letting a Wildcat quarterback pass the football. Brad Smith is one of the best running quarterbacks to ever step on a college football field. No matter what level he's playing at, college or pro, the guy's dangerous when the ball is in his hands.
Basic football knowledge: Quarterback's succeed when they are allowed to get into a rhythm. Brad Smith will never, ever be allowed to do that. That's fine. He's a gimmick player that should never throw that many passes. ...but you shouldn't expect him to be deadly accurate on every throw.
You might be right that if given a full opportunity he could be a third string QB. If he was going to be given that opportunity things like being a special teams gunner and kick returner go out the window. He would need to spend all of his time working on being a QB instead of doing all the other stuff he is good at doing.
probably, but it would be sweet if our #3QB returned a KO for 7, caught a sanchez pass for 7, ran a wild cat for 7, then later in the game threw a pass for 7! we'd probably have to give the fucker revis money!
His whole argument itself isn't trying to prove anything, he wants to be told he is right. He is taking something from the topic at hand and using it to bring up an irrelevant argument, which then puts everything at a stand still. Example being.... MBG: Brad Smith should throw outta the wildcat more than once or twice a season. Junc: Brad Smith isn't good enough to be a starting QB in the NFL. I don't have any problem whatsoever with junc, I respect his knowledge of football but I live with someone who does shit like this and it gets under my skin.
posting in this thread bc its relevant. anyone hear the Collinsworth and Michaels talk about how Joe Webb wasn't on the Vikes originally as a QB, and was made a 3rd string QB due to injuries, and then is now starting? i could of sworn i heard that in the first quarter. anywho, it seems Joe Webb, while not excellent passing - by any means, didn't seem to forget how to be a QB. One might also say he did fairly well as an NFL QB, particularly since he isn't a QB in ths league bc of reasons similar to Brad Smith's.
Key difference being Webb is a rookie and has been at QB since Childress saw him throw in training camp. Brad Smith was given that same type of opportunity and failed miserably.
It was a good comparison. Webb just has more pure QB skills than Smith does. Mangini gave Smith a shot at being a QB and I would assume one of two things happened. 1. He sucked a lot. 2. They saw all the other things he could do and decided he would be wasted as a back up QB. Maybe a little combination of both too.
I don't minst the Pussy cat offense , What I do mind is Shotty running the same play out of it every time because he is trying to set up a fake 4 months down the line. Absolute idiocy at it's finest.
Smith has the skills to throw the football. What having Smith throw the football did however was create a little second guessing in the defense when we line up in the Seminole that he might throw a pass which hopefully will give him some space to run the ball.
