Of course you need a strong defense to win a championship, but the Jets took that to an extreme. They had failed for years at finding and developing a true FQB - or even successfully obtaining one via trade or FA - that they believed they could follow the old model of the 80's Bears and just rely on a "shut down" defense. The problem is that the NFL had already decided that "offense wins eyeballs" and began changing the rules and how rules were interpreted to favor the offense. There has been no such thing as a "shut down defense" for over 30 years, but the Jets kept trying to build one at the expense of the offense. The reality is that you don't get to the playoffs without a great offense. Once there. if you don't have a damn good defense, you're going to be one and done, but you've got to get there first. Two years of focusing on the offense can't undo 20 years of focusing on defense. That said, they do need to fill some critical holes on "D", first and foremost, the pass rush, and upgrading the Safety spot.
The NFL knew a long time ago offense wins eyeballs. The full phrase is actually “offense sells tickets, defense wins championships. While the Bears had a killer, D I’m old enough to remember their qb was having a great season and they had one of the greatest RBs of the generation in their backfield. I don’t know if anyone on this board want us to only focus on one side of the ball. The main thing I have an issue with and keep preaching is it makes 0 sense to spend a 1st round pick on a 3rd LT. For me: LT - Fant LG - AVT C - McGovern RG - LDT RT - Becton is a solid starting lineup. We have no depth but that’s what rounds 3-5 are for.
The HUGE - pun intended - question mark is Becton. None if us know if he can actually be either the LT or RT at this point. For me, I'm assuming he can't be either, which is a major disappointment. But if my assumption is right, then we DO need to draft an OT with one of those two first picks unfortunately. If you're right, then of course we can use them on other spots.s
unfortunately we won’t know that answer until the season starts. (Becton did play some RT in college so he has way more experience than Icky and Fant) We can take your same statement and apply it to Wilson, right? We don’t know for sure if he’s the guy but he’s shown flashes. My stance is simply we don’t spend a top 50 pick on a position we MIGHT need when there are so many positions we DO need.
I understand your POV, I just disagree. There's no one in this class rated even close to Wilson, and even if there were, the #4 pick wouldn't get him. And adding another T/OL to a position group where there are 5starters, not just 1, is way different. If somehow JD fills the OL holes with FA, then we probably don't need to use a top pick on one - though of course that depends on the details of course. But if Douglas doesn't get a quality starting OL in FA, we can't afford to go into next season with question marks there. an OL with 4 solid starters and a hole is as good as a dam that's 4/5 complete.
